Re: If you couldn't tan anymore...
I think I would have to consider how I felt at the time, but I doubt I would tan the way I have, anyway. It would be hard to give though.

Re: If you couldn't tan anymore...
No tanning anymore would be difficult, but the desire to tan could be overcome.
I live in the cloudy northeastern US near the Great Lakes. I started tanning about 15 years ago mostly outdoors. Five years ago I started tanning year round indoors and out. I hate to admit but I have become addicted to tanning. The more UV I can get the better. I tell people I enjoy tanning because I like the warmth or it makes me feel good. In truth I crave tanning. Like most people at this site, I am aware of the risks and the benefits of tanning. I choose to tan. Moderation is the answer, but at times I choose to ignore the risks in pursuit of my passion for UV. If presented with having to stop, because of skin cancer, it would not be easy but I would stop. As several have already mentioned, if you get a second chance, better take it. I would, though it would not be easy. I hope too relocate to the southwest in the future. I did live out in new Mexico prior to coming to the Northeast. Hopefully can get enough natural sunlight there, so will not need to visit a tanning salon. |

Re: If you couldn't tan anymore...
Not meaning to hijack, but...
Question for those who wouldn't tan again: Many of you are claiming that it would be foolish to "abuse your second chance at life" - honestly, how is that any different than "abusing your first chance" After all, the risks are out there for everyone, not just those who are getting a "second chance" - why would your second chance be important all of a sudden if the current/first chance isn't important enough to quit? Just a thought.... |

Re: If you couldn't tan anymore...
To the OP.. I would just tan outside..
I love the feel of tanning.. especially in the warmer months.. and I lovvve having that tan.. but if I got cancer and got a second chance.. I would stop tanning. I love it, but I'm not obsessed. I'm white as can be now since I had stopped in the early fall, so I think I could stop altogether.

Re: If you couldn't tan anymore...
I think for me, im just so paranoid.. aha.. seriously paranoid.. I'd be scared i kicked the cancer.. and if i was going back maybe it would " Help" it come back... it's all mental!! lol But for me right now tanning isn't that hard because i'm not tanning right now, and i don't tan every week or every month.. just occasionally i get in my kicks and then i get out... But when i'm out i miss tanning loads!

Re: If you couldn't tan anymore...
Thank goodness this is a hypothetical thread eh?
If I could no longer tan inside, I would make sure to adjust my lifestyle to ensure I got enough sunlight eachday. For me tanning is more than cosmedic color. I tan for mood enhancement, I suffer from SAD- and depression worsens without my friend, the sun. Aside from mood, my skin looks and feels better! Gives me a smoother, more even skintone with less breakouts, etc. There is a reason people become "addicted/ obsessed" with tanning, and it's not color. Your brain actually releases feel good endorphines when you receive UV light, it's your bodies way of making sure you continue to get UV. It's a basic human essential. With all the new studies being done on the effects of Vit D, it's imperative that we all get the recommended dose of sunlight! It's been proven that VIT D assists in a healthy immune system, and mediates MANY diseases and conditions such as Alzheimers, Autoimmune diseases, numerous cancers including bladder, brain, breast, colon and rectal, endometrial cancer, eye cancer, liver, lung, ovarian, prostate and pancreatic cancers...to name a few, it also helps with chronic pain, cognition, heart disease, Osteoporosis, Parkinsons....the list goes on and on.... So I will continue to tan, in moderation. It's been PROVEN that melanoma, the deadliest of all skin cancers, is not caused by moderate sun exposure, but by burning your skin and damaging your cells.. IN FACT, inside workers have higher incidence of melanoma than those who work directly outside- so clearly the relationship between UV and the onset of melanoma is unknown. Not to mention that many factors come into play determing your risk for cancers, like genetics, lifestyle, the air you breathe thats filled with pollutants and carcinogens, the preservatives in our food and the pesticides sprayed on them, yadayada.... Would I blame my tanning bed if I got cancer, absolutely NOT, it's the one tool I have that helps me to no longer burn my skin in the sun! Instead I would blame myself for the years of uncontrolled sun exposure as a child, the blistery burns by the poolside, the years of oiling up in pursuit of that perfect tan. I would blame ignorance. Even if I got skin cancer, and was given a "second chance", I would tan for the benefit of VIT D, because thats will help me ward off those internal cancers I CANT SEE, unlike melanoma which is a VISIBLE cancer that can be easily seen. People arm yourself with intelligence, research the effects of the sun. Visit www.tanningtruth.com Last edited by Bronzebaby514; 11-12-2009 at 01:52 PM. |

Re: If you couldn't tan anymore...
I've thought about this before, and it always leaves me feeling panicky!!! I would find an illegal way to do it and have a march to Washington...haha.

I think that the reason people "abuse their first chance" is because they don't think it can happen to them. Once it does you realize you are not invincible anymore. If I got skin cancer I would stop tanning. It is not worth my life and I would have to find other ways to boost my mood, like exercise or something. |
