So i bought a used tanning bed today....

its an older bed of course, the thing is the top of the bed does not have Acrylic or a cage.... do i NEED to get acrylic for the top? im just wondering because if they made it without a top shield it would be ok to tan it right? like everyone b4 me did....

Hmm, i'm not sure but if you think about it some of the older tanning beds, specially stand up's was just like a cage thing.. and you could still tan it in fine! but i dunno.. Did you find anything on google?

I think it would be important just to protect yourself from touching the bulbs and getting burned if they were really hot.

Re: So i bought a used tanning bed today....

it's a Riho 1400... verry old bed made in 1985 LMaO!! i call it my dinosaur bed .
its a 20 bulb bed. max time is 30 mins. it works awesome! i like it better then i do the 12 mins beds at my salon.
i plan on getting nice new Wolff Bulbs when i have more money.
its nice having my own bed tho, because during the winter i usually stop tanning because its wayy to cold to walk to the salon and the cold makes me lazy, but now i can tan when ever i want.. how long i want.

Re: So i bought a used tanning bed today....

I'd check with the guy who runs www.tanningbeds.org. The guy knows practically everything about tanning beds.

You can most likely order a replacement acrylic or perhaps get a piece of acrylic at Home Depot (Lowe's or such) & somehow gimmick it in there.

I'm assuming the acrylic is in there for a reason but who knows. I'll see if I can find some kind of answer for ya. I actually enjoy learning about this stuff.

Re: So i bought a used tanning bed today....

I actually think I am wrong on the acrylic at Home Depot etc. I thought you might be able to get the special acrylics there but I'm not sure. They are TOTALLY different then Plexiglas but I thought they may have sold both kinds.

I'm still working on finding the exact reason for the acrylics.

In the meantime, the guy who writes for tanningbeds.org also wrote this information:

Re: So i bought a used tanning bed today....

Ah you're so lucky :( I want to buy a tanning bed so bad, not sure where I'd actually put it though.. I live near you and I barely leave the house in the winter too lol except when necessary.. so my tanning definately takes a hit.

I dont think you'd have a problem with the top.. only thing I can think of is if you moved or accidently touched the bulbs that could result in a nasty burn.. Id want it there just for security purposes, lol but Im kind of clutsy! (I can see myself forgetting there was no acrylic shield and touching it)

Re: So i bought a used tanning bed today....

congrats! that is an awesome bed. 30 minute beds are amazing and very hard to find at a salon anymore. they give awesome color and you actually get your 30 minute siesta in one of those suckers AND deep, dark color. what more could you ask for?!

you so deserve your own bed, i just remembered that you live in canada. ouch! now you can thaw out, tan and nap all in one. enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ps-i have zero clue about the acrylics or the cage thing. i am just excited for your new bed!
