Salon employee is trying to make me tanorexic
So I've been all pumped up lately people keep complenting my tan and saying how dark I am. I've only been going to my salon once ot twice a week now because I'm mostly outside.
So yesterday I go in to tan and the girl who's seen me a lot goes, "you look like you're starting to get some color!" .......in my head I'm like, "starting to?" I'm not even sure I get much darker than this! Then I'm thinking I'm not nearly as tan as I thought I was lol then wondering if maybe she's trying to make me feel that way so I'll keep coming back....do you think? Honestly I don't even feel like she was any darker than I was, I could understand then... It hurt my little tan ego a bit :-( lol |

Re: Salon employee is trying to make me tanorexic
That is how alot of employees are.
I havent gone tanning in a week or so and one of the girls was like "I think you might want to go in an hp cause you look like your back to square one" I think they just want the sales and you to come in more so they can try and upsell you. Bugs the crap outta me! |

I'm not sure why anyone would think backhanded compliments would encourage customers. Are people that stupid? If someone is insulting me, I have no desire to give them my money.

Re: Salon employee is trying to make me tanorexic
She was probably not trying to hurt your feelings, you know how dark you are compared to before and she knows you are only there a few times a week. Is she really dark herself? I wouldn't read too much into it!

Re: Salon employee is trying to make me tanorexic
I had a salon employee me tell me Monday that "when you finally get your base tan..." I fumed the whole time I was in the bed. I am VERY dark right now and only a complete idiot would think I had not reached "base tan".
I was cancelling my EFT package anyways because I just found out I'm going to be laid off - so when I got out I went up to the desk and asked for the form I told her to be sure and tell her manager when she turned it in that she was the reason I was cancelling. The funny thing is when I visited another of their locations today the employee said "WOW you have a great tan, wish I could get that dark!" |

Re: Salon employee is trying to make me tanorexic
LOL i once had a lady tell me that I finally got a base tan. I was so confused. It didn't seem like a good way to sell tans at all. What is really funny is that she was extremely pale, didn't tan at all. She's not really the best employee for a tanning salon. I also started to think that maybe I wasn't as tan as I thought... but then I decided she was crazy haha

No i don't think she was trying to be purposefully mean or anything. She's actually always been pretty nice and friendly. I was just confused because she's seen me since the beginning and like you said, there is an obvious difference. So i was thinking it was just because i was tanning less there. And no, she is about as dark as me, maybe a little less cause her tan looks like she using bronzers a lot (not trying to be mean, but you can tell on some people). |

Re: Salon employee is trying to make me tanorexic
There is another possibility why she said that. It could be that you already had some color when you first went there, and they thought that was your non-tanned color, i.e. they may have thought you had medium to darker skin naturally? Also, some people expect miracles when others tan, even if they don't get that tan themselves. I have had people tell me that I don't look like I was in the sun much when I returned from vacation (before the days of tanning beds), and my feelings were hurt. But, I also remember expecting people to come back from vacations really dark, and when they weren't, I just didn't say anything, because I didn't want to hurt their feelings. Then I realized that 1) not everyone is tan-obsessed, 2) one week is not enough to get a great tan outdoors if you didn't go to a salon first, unless you are olive-skinned or tan very easily.
But, back on topic, yes, this girl could be trying to sell you more tanning packages or something. Or she could have been jealous, lol. I see your picture and I definitely see a tan on you. |

Re: Salon employee is trying to make me tanorexic
Hmm maybe your right, I don't remember if she was there when I first started out cause my natural skin color is pretty Casper-ish. Or maybe it blinded her when I walked in the door so she couldn't remember. :)

Re: Salon employee is trying to make me tanorexic
I used to say that all the time, it's not a backhanded compliment. But being a salon employee, you can't always remember what color that person started out being...
Also, everyone's tanning goals are different and she doesn't know what yours are. Take it as a compliment because she was probably just saying that cause she has noticed that you have built color. |

Re: Salon employee is trying to make me tanorexic
when i worked at a salon i used to ask if the customer "wanted to try upgrading to get more color and break over their plateau" apparently that wasnt a good idea the lady got insulted so i told her that i proceeded to say "No! i wasnt trying to insult you, your tan is awesome! i just wanted to help you get an even darker tan!" ans she was actually really happy and upgraded. next time they say something, just tell them flat out that they insulted you! otherwise they have no idea what they are doing wrong and you'll be stuck upset. :)

Re: Salon employee is trying to make me tanorexic
Silly silly silly salon employee. I bet she didn't "mean anything" by it and I can understand how someone, in her position, who sees a wide varity of tanners (ultra mega dark to slighty sunkissed) may take for granted that everyone doesn't aspire to achieve the same level of color. It seems as if she may have spoken without thinking, we all do that from time to time.
I'm sorry it carried over into your tanning session, for me I use it as a "detox" me-time opportunity to relax. ....So just poo on her in that regard 80) .... Stick with your comfort level and go as fast or as slowly as you like to get YOUR ideal color level because your tan experience is independantly unique from any of her other clients and truth is she was probably having a "brain-fart" moment... Ugh, lordy knows I do more often than I prefer to admit to.
