This might be THE stupidest question...

(Not at ALL saying this is something I'd try) But, if someone ate only fruits and vegetables and snacks and things with ZERO fat in it, but ate more calories than they should in a day (lets say they ate 5000 calories, but NO fat) would they gain weight?

I'd say yes... keep in mind some fruits are very, very high in sugar... also fat intake is not the only thing that results in weight gain, there are many factors to consider when you are wanting a healthy meal/snack.. calories, carbs, fat, etc can all play a role.

I think yes also. In the end it's the calories burned to calories eaten that determines weight loss and gain.

I eat VERY low fat. And I mean VERY and its still difficult for me to lose weight.

yep, you gain weight with too many calories. calories are basically energy, and when eating too much and not burning it all off, it will stay in the body. and by just eating fruits and veggies without any protein or carbs, it will slow your metabolism down and brain functioning..which in the long run you'll gain the weight right back and even more than you would have in the first place.

fat does not - "fat" as in when you get FAT that's not due to a build up of "dietary fat".

People say to reduce fat cause one gram of "fat" has more calories than one gram of carbs or protein.

calories are what make you gain weight. It doesn't matter where they come from.

Most people who eat lower carb diets easily eat high-fat diets and lose weight. Your body needs (good) fats to function properly. As someone else said, fat doesn't make you fat.

^^
I agree with Jess. Too many calories overall, even from 'healthy' foods, would potentially lead to weight gain, but I notice that when I make sure what I'm eating is healthy, I fill up quickly and don't overeat, so portion control kind of takes care of itself.
