Me and my fridnd have been having an ongoing argument about tanning beds. She says that they are not like the sun rays at all, and I say that they're the closest things you can get.
Her argument: They are close but still different, and it tans you way faster because the beds are different. She also says that the beds make you look fake, the tan looks obviously fake in the long run.
My argument: It's the closest thing that you can get to the sun without laying in the sun. Some tans look fake because people use DHA and bronzers all the time and stuff like that. I look brown, not orange, so?
I just wanted to know your guys' side on this. You guys are a lot more educated in thos stuff, more than me and her combined. (: Thanks guys<3

well shes partly right in saying a tan in the sun is more "real," but youre right in saying its the closest you can get. but if someone doesnt tan in the sunlight, they probably wont tan in a bed. now this is not 100 percent for every single person, there are people who can still get a decent tan in a bed and attempt to tan outside. HOWEVER, you WILL get a more "brown" tan outside, i cant tell you why.. hopefully someone else can. but the beds are just a starting point and can only get you so dark. yes you can use tingles and bronzers and go every day and things like that but if you do that for a year youre not going to get much darker in those ending months. but time in a bed is comparable to time in the sun. i think like ten minutes in a bed is like being outside all day? tho im not sure. those are just my thoughts on the situation.

Also keep in mind that a tanning bed is safer than the sun. The sun is like being in the jungle whereas the tanning bed is like being in the city. You can't control the sun; it will do what it wants. It might have 50% UVB/50% UVA one day (which is going to make you burn) and then the next day be 10% UVB/90% UVA. You just don't know. You get to control the tanning bed though.

My boyfriend says that it's not a real tan, I tell him if it's the same rays that you get from the sun, how is it not a real tan?

It annoys me so much when people say that it's a fake tan. No, it's not. Spray tans are fake tans. If you're getting a tan from UVA/UVB rays how can it be fake? Like you said, it mimics the sun to an extent. People are so uninformed.

They are definitely different, but they are the same rays. You don't get a tan faster because the bed is different, you get a tan more quickly because it is just a more concentrated version of the suns rays. There's an article here that vaguely describes the differences: http://www.livestrong.com/article/75320-sun-rays-vs.-tanning-beds/

You're exactly right! Tanning bed tans look fake from DHA-bronzers and natural bronzers in lotions, not from the tanning beds themselves. The only thing that would make your tanning bed tan look fake is any weird tanlines you might get from the bed (booty moons, bunny tail, or pale shoulderblades).
