what are they like? Do you really not burn in them? I want to try a high pressure bed, like the Omega, but I don't think a tanning salon within a 50 mile radius of me has one. Anyone know if there's like a site online that you can look to see if there's tanning salons in a particular area that have HP beds?

omg the color i get from the omega is awesome.
Dchan the HP units near me cost about 30 dollars per session. I get half off upgrades since my salon has a member program so for me to use the sunboard it costs me 15 dollars a session. the omega was $14.50 but since we got the sunboard they are taking our omega totally bums me out but the sunboard IS better that u don't have to flip.

I called around today and found some tanning places that have HP beds, but it was really odd because none of them recommended it to me. I asked about them, but they told me the medium level beds were better because you didn't get a "True" tan in an HP bed because there was no UVB light. It was really weird, LOL.

i think my salon might have one, if its the thing where u're guaranteed not to burn after 30 min and like get 7x darker?

HP beds use a different type of light compared to "normal" tanning beds. They use High Pressure sodium or mercury vapor (I forgot which) that run from 1000 to 2000 watts apiece! Then, the beds have a cobalt filter just below the bulb to filter out UVC and 99% or more of UVB.
I don't know about the "guaranteed to not burn after 30 minutes" slogan because it may be possible to get a UVA burn. But anyway, most people swear that they get very good colour from the beds and I found that out myself when I used an Ultrabronz bed a few years back. I'm sure that the beds have advanced from the last time I'm used them and they are even better now.
I've also noticed beds that are a "hybrid" meaning that they have HP lamps in the top canopy and regular flouresecent bulbs in the bottom.
They're expensive because they use an incredible amount of power (20,000 watts +) and put out enough heat to heat a whole house and then some .

That is powerful. I"ve got to find one.

We have an Ultra Bronze Super Nova that we just got a couple weeks ago.I finally got the time to tan in it last week.My boss gave me a freebie to try it.I hadn't tanned in a couple weeks & I did the whole 24 minutes.Really gave me a much needed color boost. No redness at all.My face would have gotten red in any conventional bed.It was so comfortable.

HP beds do have some UVB but a tiny amount. They have major amounts of UVA. So much so that they supposedly work the melanin on it's way to and from the surface of the skin. By the way, on top of the huge cost of the units how much are the bulb changes? After looking at the specs of some of these machines almost all of them use configurations which use bulbs that have different life spans. Forgetaboutit.

LoL, yeah, they're majorly expensive. And it's just not the bulbs either. All that hot air from the bed has to be ducted out of the salon. To get a picture of the amount of heat produced, put about 20 or so hair dryers in that room and turn each one on maxumum!
With that in mind, there has to be a return airflow or there will be a vacuum. So, because of the expensive lamp (and sometimes cobalt filter) replacement, the very high wattage requirements (80+ amps of current @ 230+ volts),the necesary ductwork, they're a big $ draw on salons and that's why the sessions cost so bloomin' much.
