View Full Version : stick thin.... my vent (kinda long)

OK, so here's my vent for the day. I am getting completely fed up with all the images of super skinny celebrities everywhere. I don't have body-image issues, (I am actually quite content with how I look), but nonetheless, it still bothers me.

I am 5'9" and weigh 140 lbs. To me, this is a healthy body weight (I am fairly muscular), but in "Hollywood" terms, I would be considered to be on the heavy side.

When I go shopping, the sizes on the tags don't bother me, but I think the clothing manufacturers really need to get real. There is no way that I should be considered among the "larger" sized people, even though I am fairly tall.

I just feel really bad for all the body-conscious young girls out there who look to the Hollywood starlets for their inspirations. It is sick how the "stick-thin" body type has now become the ideal for so many people. And I find it disturbing that the people being labelled as "curvy" probably still fit into a size 2.

Anyways, sorry this is so long; I just had to get this off my chest. Lol, I feel better now.

Anyone feel the same as me?

Absolutely! I was watching a model show on Bravo last week and it makes me ill how skinny and sick looking those women are. There used to be a sort of "heroin-chic" look among models that doesn't seem to have disappeared.

It is totally wrong to be that way, it is utterly destructive to their own bodies and in the image they project. I say that with caution, because I am an example of another type of body image disorder (ie. the overmuscled, overtanned type) which seems much less influential in the mainstream media. But you are dead on, these women are NOT what normal people can achieve or should aspire to.

Bonnie, at least you are living a healthy lifestyle. I don't see anything wrong in that. Muscles are what I few as a healthy obsession, lol.

I have to admit, I got sucked into America's Next Top Model, and if you look at some of those girls on the website, they might be 5'11" and 112 lbs.... crazy!!!!!! I can't see how that is healthy!

And maybe it's just me, but I think it looks pretty gross when ribs and hipbones jut out. That's just not how it's supposed to be, IMO.

Vent away I feel the same way Sunshine. I would much rather see a muscular woman with a kick booty tan that some waif thin girl. Somehow I invision the muscular woman as a strong centered person and I just pity the extremely thin girl.

YESSSSSS!!!!!

I love to see girls that are confident with curves they look so good!

I'm just not confident enough to be on the curvy side. So I will stay the way I am... even if "it looks pretty gross when ribs and hipbones jut out,” mine aren't bad, but I'd be considered to thin by most peoples standards.

in the dance world it is difficult because the women have to be light enough for the men to lift, but some girls take it to the extremes... but it is usually because they have like 1% body fat, and the rest is muscle... but i have friends who (before my intervention) were 5'6" and 90 lbs.... it is very disturbing that this is the 'image of health' the media is portraying now, out of the two being obese, or being underweight... the latter is healthier if not to the extreme....

Honey I'm the same as you, 5'9" and 140, and this is the heaviest I've been but people still tell me I'm so skinny! I feel perfectly proportional, being ridiculously thin is so unattractive! Most guys will tell you the same. Those models and actresses got nothin' on us because we are healthy!! And there is nothing wrong with a little junk in the trunk!

Yeah i agree. I always feel self conscious about my body. Im 5'6" and 143 lbs. I would take 5'9" and 140 any day over what i have now.

id love to have more curves...im 5'5 105 lbs. i wear a size A bra and am often told i lack ***. im sure im labeled as one of those stick thin girls, but im a very healthy person. i try and eat well, but i love junk food as well. people always criticize me for being skinny and im told i need to eat more. im on the other end of the conversation saying how awful such labeling makes me feel. i know alot of girls worry about body image and being a size 6 or whatever but im jealous of those girls who have great curves...you ladies are lovely and i envy you!

me a few of my friends eat more then anyone we know, for what...to still be labeled one of those "stick thin" girls many many times.

honestly its time for people to stop saying media is making girls want to be small...that was in the 90's...now people like beyonce, jlo, eva mendes, are coming out and are curvy and thats how teenagers want to be now for the most part.

Sarah I don't think you look stick thin. I think you look like a healthy young woman. Make that healthy TAN young woman.

I agree 100%!
But I also feel sorry for the naturally thin women who aren't trying to be skinny, and they just are. I can see both sides.

The problem is are the people who are making themselves stick thin to be a part of the 'Hollywood' in crowd, and they are not people that young women and men should look up to.

I never meant to make anyone feel self-conscious about being thin. When I said "stick-thin" I was referring to the look of celebrities that DOESN'T happen naturally, the anorexic look, if you will.

I didn't want anyone to feel offended, I was not being critical AT ALL of anyone here, please know that my intentions were good.

I completely agree. I tried so hard to lose weight (I am 5"2 and weigh 140 pounds) by doing lots of exercise (weights and cardio) diet and taking fat burners... I got my body fat from 19 to 15% (in a healthy way) but my weight stayed the same! My sick mom still tells me I am fat and it`s been so hard to accept my weight. She tells me I should be 115 like she was when she was my age. How am I supposed to lose 25 pounds from let`s say 16% body fat???

I know I don`t look fat and that I look fit, but the number just still bothers me sometimes!
