Hello:
I'm new to the board. Not new to tanning. Although last year I decided to not tan in the sun anymore and use sunless tanning products. Well, it was a pain in the butt!! Not to meantion that it came out streaky and I paid alot of money for some products. I got the high end products and at first they worked great but then I started fading strange -- and I just had to wait for it to wear off.
I'm afraid of skin cancer.
How do you guys deal with the threat of skin cancer?
I went on a vacation a few weeks ago to Hawaii. Not my first time there but, it's been a looong time.
My skin was WHITE! So, I couldn't enjoy my time in the sun and at the beaches very well. I wanted to lay out and get a tan but, the sun there is so intense - my skin couldn't handle it. I had to wear a ton of sunblock and not stay out for very long.
We are going back next year and I want to have a good base tan before going so that I can enjoy it more.

I live in an extremely dry climate - high desert. My skin gets SO dry! I use a ton of lotion after showering and throughout the day but, in the summer, it still feels dry. I don't want wrinkled dry skin.

In the spring I want to start out again in the tanning beds to get a good base. But, I have a problem with them.... the heat of the bulbs gives me a skin rash and I get very itchy.
They have tried to put me in the regular beds with the older bulbs but, I still get itchy.
Is there some other way I can combat this? Maybe a different lotion?
Anything....
thanks for any hints and help.

welcome to the board! check the newbies forum and see if you can get some of your questions answered there. skin cancer has come up on other forums too; you can do a search.
what lotions are you using? sounds like you need MAJOR moisturization.

Welcome to Iamtan KuKu! Enjoy!
It does sound like you need to use Quality Salon lotions for tanning and moisturizing... what lotion lines does your salon carry?? Knowing that, we could probably help ya pick a few out!

welcome..we will help you any way we can..let us know about the lotions..and also your regular beds shouldnt have older bulbs..they are just not as intense and the higher pressure beds..make sure your tanning times are adjusted properly and your salon should be happy to answer your questions..never tbe afraid to ask them anything concerning your tanning..if they dont have the knowledge..then some one on this board should..happy tanning..

Welcome.
How do we deal with the threat of skin cancer?
Well, for one, I try to give my skin a break. I only tan in the sun/beds from May-Mid Sept.. I moisturize 2-3X a day with a good loiton, NEVER burn, and take care of my skin.
What type of moisturizer are you using? It sounds like you need a much better one. A lot people like Supre Hempz, its nice. Its thick and creamy. You can get it at your salon if they sell Supre products, or offline.
I would reccomend getting a base or even more of a tan before Hawaii to protect your skin.
Feel free to ask us any questions .

I think my Curel works pretty good in the winter. Like right now, I can feel my back is moisturized and my chest. But, I don't know -- maybe I do need something more or better. The salon carries Australian Gold, Swedish Beauty lotions, and California Tan lotions.

Curel might not be cutting it
It has mineral oil, and some people don't like mineral oil. If your salon carries California Tan, maybe try getting some Total Immersion Daily moisturizer. I've never tried it, either, but I know its a good one
Also, what lotions are you using?
Always be sure to wear eye wear, also. No tanlines is NOT worth catarachts

Ok. I haven't gone to the salon yet to tan this year. So, I don't have any lotion yet. I'm not sure what to get.

Also.... what would you suggest for outdoor tanning IE: beach in Hawaii? Same stuff??

Do you have any tan at all?
If not, I would reccomend buying Swedish Beauty's "Swedish Hemp Creme". It is a lotion you use WHILE tanning. It is for building a base tan. It should be around $25.
Then, I would buy Californa Tan's "Total Immersion". It is for using after tanning, or after showering, etc. You can use it anytime you feel the need. I moisturize my entire body around 3 times a day, just to give you an idea .
Hope I helped.

Hmmmm...well, yes and no. If its a tingle lotion, NEVER use it outdoors!!!
You CAN use indoor tanning lotions outdoors, but its kind of waste if you're going to be going in the water, etc.
I would either: A) Put on some sunblock (ATLEAST spf 15 or greater) then wait 2 hours and put on your tanning lotion
or B)Put on sunblock and use no tanning lotion but after you are out of the sun, moisturize like crazy![ This Message was edited by: ForeverTan27 on 2003-12-20 18:35 ]

I have some color now from Hawaii but, it is fading fast. I probably won't hit the tanning salon til early spring. I'll be pale as a ghost by then.
Is the Swedish Hemp Creme a "tingle" as they call it? I'm not quite sure what that means but, I can guess. I have real sensitive skin! If the bulbs are too hot in the beds, I'll get heat bumps that itch.
When I got the last heat bumps, I think I was using an acclerator (but, I can't remember).
By putting on the sunblock and then tanning lotion 2 hours later, will that allow for getting a suntan? Things have changed since I used to sunbathe outdoors. I used to just put on an outdoor suntan lotion and lay out (1 hour each side).

Kuk.. I'm starting to tan again this year..been going for almost 4 wks now. Ive been using CalTan's Ambrosia right now... It gives me a great color! Seeing your salon carries CalTan I would deff get it. It pretty moisturizing and has a great scent to it! The price is pretty good too! If you decide to get it..tell me how you like it!

I have sensitive skin and I cannot use a tingle lotion. I've been tanning indoors for 11 years and the one and only time I tried a tingle lotion I ended up getting hives and it was horrible. If I were you I wouldn't try using one if you are prone to heat rashes. Have you tried using an air conditioned bed that stays cool during tanning? I can remember at a few of the old places I tanned the beds would get so hot that I'd end up getting out before my time was up and my skin would be splotchy. I go to Crazy44's (she's a member here) salon and her beds are always nice and cool and I never even sweat in them which makes a huge difference.

No, I"ve never been in an airconditioned one before. And I remember that if I went in the evenings (when alot of people go), the beds would be so HOT that I had to get out sooner too because I was SO uncomfortable. I don't think they have anything like that where I live.
I wonder if the lotion I was using was a tingle lotion...? I don't even remember what it was -- I think it was from the Calf. Tan line. and you know, I remember thinking that I wanted something more than a 1. And the people who worked there would just sell whatever you wanted to buy. They never said, "oh, you're a first timer - you shouldn't get one higher than a 1 to start off." So, my heat rashes could have come from the lotion. I'm glad I found this site!!
It might be a bit different this time.
When I was laying out in Hawaii, my skin started to burn. Like hot oil was being poured on me. LOL.. It was in a way. I was slathered with Maui Babe. First ingredient is mineral oil. LOL!!!!
The only thing the beds have here are fans at the head of the beds. I would get cold if I went in the am before anyone else had it running.

I would try to go in the mornings. If a salon is really busy, those beds stay pretty warm. I don't know where you live, but where I live, that can be pretty significant!
You don't need a tingle lotion to tan-you can get plenty dark without it. Just use a salon quality tanning lotion and moisturizers. I think you said your salon carries Cal Tan?? Try the Total Immersion. I love it, currently out and using Hempz (also good stuff).
