View Full Version : Using body tanning lotion on face...It\'s okay.

When I was a newbie here awhile back I asked whether it would be a good idea to use the same lotion on your face as you do on your body. I was concerned because I had moderate acne in the past and was still prone to occasional breakouts. It seemed that many on the board used a special face tanning lotion such as Saving Face.

I have been tanning indoors for about 6 weeks now and I have been using the same lotion on my face as I do on my body. The lotion I used was Climax. I just started using XPower by Cal Tan.

My experience has been that I have not had any breakouts do to using the lotion on my face. In fact, what little acne I did have is pretty much all gone now.

I think my results are due to two reasons. First of all, at least on my bottle of lotion, it said it would not clog pores. I'm assuming that most lotions are formulated in this way to resist against clogging pores. Secondly, after I tanned I almost always went home immediately and showered while using Clean & Clear Daily Pore Cleanser to wash my face.

I am writing this for the knowledge of both new and experienced tanners who are curious on the subject as I was in the past.

when facial lotion is created to pamper the delicate skin on your face i don't think its a waste of money. i'd think that younger tanners WOULD want to make sure that they try to prevent lines and wrinkles or they will end up looking 40 years old at 20. i have seen people who dont care for their face at the salon i have seen 18 year old girls look so much older than they actually are.

Regular body lotions have been working fine on my face till about a month ago. I am giving Saving Face a try since alot of people seem to like it. I dont know why it hasnt gotten to me in the mail yet GRRRRR.

I NEVER use the same lotion on my face and body... facial tanning products are designed specifically to condition that sensitive skin. Some of them also contain great antioxidants and anti-aging ingredients.

I would think, especially if you have a history of problem skin, that you'd want to use something specifically designed for your face.

actually it is not a waste of money. i hope that you do realize that facial lotions are better for your face. would you use normal body moisturizers on your face? do you buy special facial cleansers or do just use whatever body soap you use? it's the same thing.

The skin on your face is much more delicate and sensitive than the skin on the rest of your body. There aren't NEARLY as many layers of skin... Your face needs extra care.

Being 14 and 15 you guys might not think much about aging, but I guarantee in 10 years you will...

also, I hope everyone realizes that tingle lotions SHOULD NOT be used on your face ever... if you're using one of those for your session and you don't own a separate facial accelerator, be sure to just something NON-TINGLE on your face.

if you are tanning you should be taking extra good care of your skin anyway. if think you are mature enough to tan you should pamper the skin you have no matter how young you are. i am 27 and have no lines or wrinkles but i am not about to slack off.

believe me when i first started tanning i thought this lotion thing was all a racket. i always used lotions but i thought the way they were pushed on me was a bit much. the more research i did on tanning the more i realized what my skin needs and what tanned skin needs even more. and your face needs special care ESPECIALLY if you tan.

Well, let's not forget that when Mainevent says his acne is starting to clear up that tanning can help to clear up acne. I'm sure that tanning has been playing a role in helping his acne clear up. Just because tanning lotions for your body don't cause your face to break out doesn't mean you shouldn't use them.
Our facial skin is much more delicate than the skin on our body. Facial tanning contain antioxidants to help fight fine lines, wrinkles, collagen break down and dryness. I used to use regular tanning lotion on my face before I started using facial lotions and now I wouldn't even think of putting a regular tanning lotion on my face!!

First of all, thanks for everyone's input on this topic. Actually, the original point of my post was to convey that using body tan lotion on the face won't necessarily make your face break out. When I first started tanning this was one of my concerns. I actually tried to buy some Saving Face but nobody in my area had it. Intead of ordering it of the net I was lazy and didn't.

I never knew about all the different ingredients in facial tanning lotion. I originally thought that the main purpose of a facial lotion was that it wouldn't clog pores and make you break out. Being enlightened with some of the input on this thread, it sounds to be an extremely wise decision to use a special facial lotion. The benefits of anti aging ingrediets etc... are espcially important to use when you are tanning because U.V. rays natually age skin.

My question is now, what is the best facial tanning lotion? Saving Face? Illuminate? Something else?

Personally, I like Saving Face the best.... it's hypoallergenic, no scent, and designed especially for sensitive skin. I even use it as my daily facial moisturizer.
Lustrous was another good one (esp. for skin that tends to be oily b/c it would dry that out) but it's been discontinued since X-Appeal and Envy My Golden Face came out. Unfortunately, I've never tried either...

Illuminate used to be a favorite but I found the apple pectin to be irritating to my dry skin... it made my face red.

First of all, I take VERY good care of my skin. I moisturize my BODY 2X a day, and my face 3-4X a day.
When you're talking about a seperate lotion for the face, it all depends when.
When Tanning: No, I don't use a seperate facial lotion. I just use whatever sample on my face, and I feel its doing a GREAT job! (as long as its not a tingle) (I only tan once a month....)
While at home: I moisturize on my FACE with Olay Hydrating Beauty Fluid - CLINICALLY proven to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. I moisturize with taht after showers, when i get home from school, in the morning, and before bed.

x appeal is awesome! you CAN use the same lotion (non-tingle) that you use on your body on your face. this is definitely better than no lotion on the face at all. the question is....how important is the health of the skin on your face to you? i am assuming that everyone will say "extremely important" as this is the first part of you people really see (and we all know we're vain). the same way tanning lotions are created (to increase your melanin production while preserving your dermal health & combatting free radicals related to tanning & other elements, like pollution) facial lotions are created to specifically protect the thinner and more fragile facial skin. you wouldn't use a regular lotion to tan b/c it is not created to protect the skin of tanners-right? this same thinking can be applied to facial lotions, why would you use a tanning lotion, that will protect facial skin a little, when you can use one formulated JUST for that purpose? then again it goes back to the question of how important your face is to you?

As long as it is not a tingle or a bronzer I think it would be ok to use it on your face.

I'll use Saving Face on my Face when I use a tingle or hot lotion, and it works great, otherwise, I'll use the same lotion for my face as my body, and actually, sometimes I'll take my Sun Tea in a smaller bottle and use it for my face since it feels great on my face, doesn't break me out, and I can cover my face for most of the session, but still get great color on my face.
I am concerned about my skin too.. and that's why I use a seperate facial wash and moisturizer after showering, and covering up my face for about half my session while tanning, and my face looks great!
It's not a waste of money at all to buy a seperate facial tanning lotion IMO, since it is designed specifically for the face, and I'm planning on tring the Xappeal when my SO has some in

well that is TOTALLY different than someone who tans regularly.... Tanning a few times a week requires taking extra-good care of our facial skin... Once a month allows a lot more leeway.

I used to use tanning lotions meant for the body0 on my face, but then switched to an SPF 4 when I started freaking about aging...then went to DS Saving Face because it has the extra pampering ingredients my face seems to need. I feel happy with this combo now.

Saving Face is a wonderful facial product.... I am interested in trying Matahari's new Envy My Whatever-It's-Called b/c Matahari also usually contains great ingredients for the skin.

So what's the story on this X Appeal? Is a Cal Tan product like XPower? Is it suppose to be a top of the line facial lotion?

yes I think X-Appeal is a higher-end facial lotion..... I'm not a fan of the X-line so I probably won't try it... but I'll give the new Matahari facial lotion a shot.

I'm glad you've changed your mind! Your face will thank you for it later. The price really depends on your salon, the average seems to be about $20. Saving Face is 4oz but it last forever since you don't need that much to cover your face. My current bottle of Saving Face I've had since August and it's December and I've got just under half a bottle left.

OK, I just looked at this thread, and would like to say that using a facial lotion is NOT a requirement, and that many tanning lotions for your bodu contain the same anti-wrinkle and anti-aging ingredients as the facial lotions... it IS a personal decision, and at least you were using SOMETHING on your face......

Plus it was hard for me to find one I could use on my sensitive face. I started using Illuminate (I like it WAY better than Saving Face) and was so impressed with how it evened out my face & with how dark it get with it.
