Hey Terminator, Welcome to Iamtan!
Well, I'm not a pro, But...
Are you starting tanning indoors? I'd definitely look over and talk to several salons in your area, so you can choose one that's right for you. Be sure to talk to the Salon Employess, and they should be able to explain a little bit about the beds, times, and lotions you can use being a beginner tanner. my advice would be to start in a regular bed for about 5 - 7 mins at 2 or 3 sessions per week for the first week, as long as you're not burning, and increase your time by 2-3 mins every week, as long as you're not burning, untill you reach the max on your bed. It's a good idea to tan every other day, as your skin needs to "Relax" for 24 - 48 hours, to replenish itself, and you might see better results from your tanning sessions this way. You should use a good base lotion, and that'll depend on which brand you like, DON'T use a tingle till you've worked your way up to them. You should always remember to MOISTURIZE, almost every lotion line has an After-tan Moisturizer to go with it, and a good tan and well moisturized skin go hand in hand. Also, Hydrated skin also helps, so drink lots of water too!
Good Base Lotions= Fiesta sun Sol plus or Bronze plus, Synergy Tan Brown Envy, Emerald bay Dark N Dazed, and there are ohters, and I'm sure you'll get lots of help and other suggestions too from everyone, these are just my opinions and suggestions. Just remember, don't rush to tan, be careful, moisturize, drink plenty of water, and Enjoy!

hi terminator.........i would start in a regular 20 min bed for 10 min ask how old the bulbs are first if the are not so new say at about 700 hrs you could go 10 min easily... start with a step 1 Acclerator like Accomplice don't buy a bottle buy a pkt......cuz you will not be there to long...tan every other day as long as your not burning..up it by 1 min as long as you did not burn....remember it takes 12 to 24 hrs for you to show your color it is normal to be pink when you come out of the bed..it is not normal however to turn pink after a few hours after you have already tanned this mean you have burned...if you did not burn..up it again to 12 min..this time using beach bum rum or cuo2....hopefully your salon carries caltan products most due...As a salon owner this is what i suggest...Make sure your salon is educated..it is very important!!

Everyone pretty much answered everything, but I do have a lotion rec. Fiesta Sun 2Twisted. I used it when I was just beginning and it has a very fresh smell. Most lotions smell feminine, but this one doesn't so this would be great for you since you're a guy.

Equipments doesnt really make a difference, clean and education and professionlism.
Ask about the person behind the counter how long have they been doing there job...
You should not go more than 8 minutes to start..if you do not burn then go up 1 to 2 minutes each time, even if you only get pink but it goes away over nite..stay at the same time the next session.
You want to invest in a nice tanning lotion and a moisturizer to use when you get out of the shower..Make sure you purchase some goggles also.
Happy tanning.

I would start off with a base bed, to build a base tan. Your salon should be able to reccomend how much time you should tan for according to your skin type and what the bed manufacturer reccomends. Remember to increase your time gradually, if you are burning cut back on your time, you should never burn. As long as your are getting good results, the time you're at is effective, when you stop seeing color change with the time you're at, increase your time by a couple minutes.
