I have been working in a salon for awhile now and I must say the people who do not use lotion seem to be darker that the people that do use lotion. I have decided to try not using lotion for about a week or so and see if I get any darker. I use the best lotions, tingles, bronzers, etc I use it all and still they are darker. Why?

maybe it's just their skin. some people do get naturally darker than others it's just their genetic make up. my brother and my father and even my grandfather get veeeeeeeeery very dark they just have naturally more olive in their skin than i do (i wasn't lucky enough to be dark complected)

that and someof them just look awful that dark, so just think... u look natural coloured instead of some sickly brown colour that makes them look like some sort of animal...

you really have to look at your background... people of celtic or english heritage dont get as dark as someone from southern italian decent.

Probably not a good idea to go without any lotion. Your skin will suffer for it.

everyone has a genetic limit for how dark that they can get.... if you are an irish redhead, you will never get as dark as a brown-haired brown-eyed girl.
you should always use lotions when tanning. dry skin reflects UV light rather an absorbs those tanning rays... take good care of your skin when tanning by using a good moisturizing tanning lotion and take good care after tanning.... use upgrade beds when you can... and you will get as dark as you possibly can.

Shawnee American Native/French/Danish. I have somewhat dark olive skin, so I tan well, but I have a hard time with my legs. I am working on them though.

I'm like a mixed breed, lol. I'm part indian (native american), mostly caucasian (northern Europe decent).
I get pretty dark if I want to but I don't really want to become super dark. I just want to be 'moderate', no pun intended
But if I had some southern Europe or native american blood mixed in me, I would be darker, definitely. I used to be jealous of very dark ppl but I have learned to be more accepting as I got older.

I tan very easily too and would be able to get very dark without lotion. I would never tan without lotion because of the damaging effects to the skin without lotion. Those people with the easier "tanability" are able to get away with the cheaper lotions because they need more skin care and hydration than melanin producting ingredients. If you are fair it is all the more reason to use lotion.....in order to produce more melanin so you too will be darker.

and you may see people who are "very dark" who don't use lotion, but their skin is probably super-dry and scaly.... ew ew ew.

I get dark as pitch when I use good tanning lotions. They take care of my skin!

also I don't think alot of people realize just how dark they really are until they see themselves in a pic...or you could be suffering from a little tanorexia

Yep, Sunderella, you're right. We all get a case of tanorexia now and then.

I'm a chronic tanorexic, I'll admit it! But I have gone way past my best tan when I was competing now that I am using better beds and lotions.

I was really tan around Halloween (but you pros would probably consider me light compared to you!). Anyway, after I saw pictures I had to stop tanning for awhile. It just didn't work too well for me like it does other people.
I can get really dark as well. I am Irish, Polish, and German.

You will tan 40% faster using a lotion, the ingredients in the tanning lotion increases magnification of uv light. Moisturized skin tans much better and will maintain a tan longer.

I have tanorexia. I love colour. And I'm not pale fair but medium fair. I would think a deep black tan would look too unnatural on me but that doesn't stop me from TRYING.
I fully believe the right lotion will make me darker in the right bed. And, if it does turn out to be a big load of hooey at least it's moisturizing my skin.....

I too have tanorexia. My husband says I am dark, I tell him he needs to eat more carrots. I see some really dark people on this site and they have glowing healthy looking tans and they use lotions.

I would much rather have skin that looked conditioned and be a few shades lighter! You look more healthy when you use lotion, believe me, i've been on both sides of the boat; i dont know that I have tanorexia, but in some lighting I think I look great, and in other light, I'm like "How do they let me work in a tanning salon?"

ABOUT 3 YEARS AGO I DIDN'T USE LOTION. IT DRIED OUT MY SKIN SO TERRIBLY. I WOULD SCRATCH CONSTATLY!!! I THINK THAT YOU GET DARKER WHEN YOU USE A LOTION, I WILL NEVER GO LOTIONLESS AGAIN! I HAVE A DARK COMP. ANYWAYS CUBEN/POLISH

I've noticed the same thing... I'll ask people what lotion they use and they say they don't use any! No matter waht.. I will refuse to go without any lotion because I know for a fact that just ONE session without lotion will dry my skin out.. and that's no fun. But I am loving the lotion I'm using now cuz it's working great!

I use to not use lotion and my skin would peel so bad. Now I always use lotion and I get just as dark as when i went without. I guess its just in my blood to get really dark no matter what though b/c I'm Filipina/Scottish/Japanese/Spainish from Spain...and the list goes on and on

The important thing is taking care of your skin so your tan looks healthy, it doesn't matter how dark you can get if your skin is dry it won't look good and as you age you are much more likely to develop that "leather-look" if you don't take care of your skin while you are young. The best way to a great looking tan is Moisturization!

I have to use lotion. Besides the whole fun thing about trying different lotions etc. I would be Lizard woman if I didn't use any. I can't imagine.

Lady I work with is in her mid-50's...has the long hair, tries to keep a tight body, tans e*v*e*r*y day, 365. You know the kind...in her 50's, remembering her 40's, trying to look 30's and wishing she was in her 20's? Anyway, she does NOT use lotion and Jeffrey Dahmer could use her skin for a lamp shade. Go for the lotion!

Yeah I know alot of people that don't use lotions and get dark. I went one day without lotion.. and it dried my skin out BAD! I can't remember if I got darker, but the drying was so awful! I could never go a week without using lotion in a bed! Oh gosh.. nightmares!

My father is German, and my mother has Cherokee...I actually get darker without lotions when I'm outside, BUT since I have became more knowledgeable on the benefits of using lotions, I never go without them. My color is like a dark caramel bronzey color with indoor tanning, and dark caramel outside...that is what color my Mother says I am anyway.

I am half cuban and half italian. I can get a tan with no problem but with lotions I get to that color that make people go WOW.

Years ago I tanned without lotion and just moisturized afterwards and could never get rid of the dry shins, my skin has improved so much since I started using high end tanning lotions and moisturizers I just wish I would have known how important it was back then!

That reminds me of that Cabana Chat lady on Mad TV. She played the stereotypical older lady that had that overtanned and extremely wrinkled skin. I miss that show

think about keeping your skin healthy and moisturized and it'll pay you back for that. for now think about getting it the healthiest you can instead of the darkest you can and b4 you know it you'' be darker than the rest of them.. but w/e you do DO NOT go w/o lotion.. its very very drying.. think of tanning with lotion= tanning 2 times as opposed to tanning w/o lotion= tanning 1ce hope i helped..

mmmhmm. Same with me and that Mohawk lineage. My father and I get this nice bronzy/brown. like an indian summer crayola crayon. But then again, he tans outside, no lotion and his skin is... well, if I ever needed a nice bronze purse and shoes set.....

I see so many people going into the salon without lotion and you can clearly see the difference in the condition of their skin, they don't have that nice glow you should have with a tan they are very dried up looking

I wouldn't subject my skin to tanning without lotion...What's the point of having a great tan with skin all dried up like leather...

My skin is better since I have been tanning than before I started tanning, just because I use lotions so much! Go figure!
