View Full Version : 20 minute bed only a 'surface' tan?

As the employees at my salon describe it..the 20 minute bed basically gives you a surface tan unlike the 10 minute bed. Their 20 minute bed is a Euro Sundash Gold with Wolff Eurosun bulbs in it. I was thinking of using the 20 minute bed every now and then so I can relax, but now sure if I want to now that it is supposedly only a 'surface' tan. The bulbs in the 10 min ( Euro Sundash Platinum) are Bellariums. Anyone know anything about the bulbs and which is the better of the two?

okay I am no bed expert... but this is pretty much how I understand base beds and upgrade beds:
base beds: have a higher % of the UV rays that create new melanin granules.
upgrade beds: have a high % of the UV rays that cause melanin granules to get darker or more brown.
this explanation, as I understand it, indicates that you should use both base and upgrade beds to develop your tan. that's what I do. I use base beds mostly, but I upgrade to "darken" my tan about once a week.

These beds that I mentioned are both base beds...the 20 minute which has more of the uvb would create the new melanin granules and by going back to the 10 minute bed which has less uvb but more uva it would brown the melanin created . Sound about right? That would make sense why they only recommend using the 20 minute bed every 3 or 4 times.

ok I am still not a bed expert but that makes sense.... base beds build the granules and the upgrades darken the granules.
I am still hoping that Don UV while show up ('cause I emailed him and begged him to) so he can help us here..... he knows far more than I... as do the salon owner mods here. Teresa, help!

Usually your base beds will have more UVB than your upgrades.........also longer tanning times too. UVB is your burning ray. The base beds will help your body produce more melonacytes while the upgrades will oxidize them quicker. You need both UVA and UVB to tan and they all have both they just vary in the proportions.
I myself, personally prefer a bed with a very high level of UVB......

Okay, I am starting to see better reasons for upgrading rather than for the fun of it can you give us ratios?like base 3 to upgrade 1?

ok this is what the tanner told me. You should use the 20 min beds regularly and use the upgrades about once a week, the level 5 at this salon I was told doesn't need to be used but every 2 weeks. Hope that helps.

The only reason I haven't used any base beds is because they are generally (at least around here anyway) smaller and thus less comfortable. I do like the 20 minute part though. I might try one, see what happens!

well i think the thing that is missinge here is what upgrade bed are you going into? is it a orbit diva 7 because results will really vary but here at my salon we have a super cyclone and a orbit and those are about equal to 3 tans in regular bed
