There is a recommended maximum amount of hours/time that you should be exposed UV/sunlight, but I can't remember what it was, is it like 500 hours per year? I remember reading that you shouldn't really be exposing yourself over this amount of time. Does anyone know how much time that is? Thanks

Hmm. How in the world would you keep up? I'm too lazy to keep a tanning journal. Besides, wouldn't it vary from person to person? (And I've probably used up 500 and then some already!)

I would think that it would depend on your skin type!

I canīt answer it for the US, but in Sweden we have a system of public "vårdcentral" (health centrals) and this organization runs also an public information agency for health issues. They have a bad tendency for dramatizing possible risks, we allready make our jokes about "the deathly risk of the week" or "the sickness charts".
In Germany the situation isnīt as organized, but somewhat similar. At the issue of UV-exponation the "Bundesamt für Strahlenschutz" ("federal authority for radiation safety") gives an recommended maximum amount of 50 times of sunbathing (including sport or working in the sunshine) or indoor tanning a year. They are even twice as convervative as the even convervative organisation of dematologist against skin cancer, which recommend a maximum of 100 sunbathes / tanning sessions well below burning a year - refering to "Australian epidemological studies" and, of cause, "the high Swedish standards". There are so many individual factors in this calculation that there may be persons, who couldnīt tan or even stay in for short times inthe sun without risk and other, who can go into the bright sun for hours each day without any harm.

Hmmm... well, I THINK it's displayed somewhere in my salon, I'll explore and look it up next time I visit and if I find out I'll get back to you.

if this is true, then you can go tanning for 20 mins each time for 1500 visits. which means you can go 28.7 times a week, or 4.1 times a day. i hope no one NO ONE ever goes this much... lol

Just dont go over 24 hours a day.
Ok really, too much tanning could have a negative effect on your tan. Like anything else you can build a resistance to it.

Tanning resistance, Hahaha! Put it simple: 1. Never get burned! 2. Take a day off beween two tanning sessions.

Not tanning resistance but a resistance to the light.

Yup, I checked yesterday, I think it was 500 minutes. Annual exposure shouldn't be more than 500 minutes. Was it minutes? I'm sure it was minutes. I'll check again tomorrow!

I saw a little article in a local parenting paper. It said we should all sit in the sun for 15 minutes a day without spf for both physical & mental benefits.Going by that-indoor tanning shouldn't be bad for you at all.

500 minutes ayear in natural sun or in a sunbed or both? On what intensity? UV-A, UV-B, mixed? Entire body or only face / hands? Dark or pale skin? This is as absurd as the "50 times a year" rule
The rule to go in the sun for 15 minutes a day whitout spf sound sensible - and familiar. Thatīs exactly what nature health care orientated doctors told since the 1880-ts.They are never proven wrong all the years. Yes, you got as far I now a "resitance" to the light because youre upper epidermis get thiker ("lichtschwiele" light calluse?). Thats an absulutly normal and healthy process. It is also normal that the most notible chancing in skin color appears in the first two or three weeks of tanning. As you came nearer to you "maximum tan" it getīs more and more difficult to get darker - thatīs the reason why tingles ect. are invented.
But there is also a training effect of tanning: even when paled down (after a month or so after tanning) formerly tanned skin are getting darker more easily than "untrained" skin. Thatīs the reason why it so hard to even out tanlines.

I double-checked BTW, it is 500 minutes. As it was a sheet showing indoor exposure times for certain skins in the booth, I'm assuming it's 500 minutes indoor tanning for everyone.

So really.. if we all tan in 20 minute beds... we can only go 25 times a year...
Hmm..
