For me, I thought I had a pretty decent base tan after about 10 sessions. I have to build up time very slowly though. It would really depend on your skin type and such.

It depends on your skin type & the bulbs you are tanning with.
summers said it best. somebody with olive skin will be dark in no time but if you are fair skin you will have to start at 2-3 minutes and go many more times and you will not go up in minutes as quickly so it will take you much longer.

It took me about 2 weeks to get a good base tan. And even then I really wasn't 'tanned' til i started going the full session. Then I could really see the difference.

If I were to start from being totally pale, it would be about 2 weeks for me. My legs seem to tan very fast and hold on to the tan much longer compared to the rest of my body though. I went 8 minutes yesterday and my back got a bit blistered but the rest of my body was unscathed. Looks like I have several more vists in order before I get a good base tan, not counting the legs .

Do not tan again until the burn goes away! You don't want to tan when have a burn that is not smart.
Happy Tanning.

It took me about 3 wks, and I usually go 4-5 days a week. I'm pretty fair skinned, and built my time up slowly though. Not super slow, I started at 10 min in a 20 min bed, but was just REALLY gradual about increasing that time. I've been going for about a month now, and I'm finally up to the full 20 min.

I have a dark complexion so it only took me about 4 sessions to get a good tan going

I would say about 2 or 3 sessions for me to get a banging base tan.

Maybe this is where i'm going wrong. I always give up after about six 10 minute sessions on my 20 minute bed when nothing's happening. I always think i'm damaging my skin for nothing. But i guess getting a tan slowly on a slow tanning bed is no more damaging than getting a quick tan on a quick tanning bed, right? I'm gonna start tanning again and try to stick it out till i see results.

As long as you are not seeing pink or red, bump it up a couple of minutes each time. Start low and keep working your way up, using a good tanning lotion, moisturing, etc. Don't give up!
