Hello All,

I am new to tanning and have some questions about the various lotions I have heard about and other stuff.

Below are some questions I have. Is there a good site that describes this stuff without a marketing pitch?

Are tanning lotions necessary during exposure on a bed or booth? If so, what function do they serve other than to moisturize? I understand the skin tans better when it is not dried out but does the lotion serve any other purpose? Does it actually affect melanin production?

What is a bronzer? At what stage would a person use one?

I understand a tingler. That makes sense. I have not used one since I have only tanned a few times.

Also are there nutritional supplements than can help the tanning process? Is there some nutrient that gets depleated that I should consider adding to my diet?

This is a great forum and has been very helpful to me so far.

Tanning lotions aren't exactly neccessities in a literal sense, but they are very benificial. Lotions contain certain ingredients that when they interact with the skin help activate things such as oxidation, etc. that help the skin get a better tan. Using a lotion can help the skin tan up to 70% darker.

A bronzer is a tanning lotion that has ingredients such as sunless tanners that give you an instant brown look. They come in two types; a cosmetic bronzer that washes off after you take a shower, and a longer lasting bronzer that acts like a sunless tanner and fades in 2-5 days. You can use a bronzer at almost anytime (it's best though to start after you have a base tan) but the main thing is to know how dark the bronzer is otherwise you could end up looking very orange if you're very pale and you use a bronzer meant for a tanned person.

There are suppliments such as TanAid and TanTabs that contain zinc, copper, and L-Tyrosine which stimulate the tanning process. I can't think of any nutriet that gets depleted, so someone jump in if there is one

Welcome to the site

There is TONS of lotion info on this site! If you need info on a certain lotion your can go to the search feature and find out all you want about a brand or type of lotion. And belive me someone on here has tried it!

Thank you both for the info. I've been reading some of the posts on lotions and such. Very interesting stuff. I guess finding a good lotion is a matter of trial and error. My wife has been tanning for a while and has a bottle of some Cocoa Butter stuff. The top ingredients are water, mineral oil, then stearic acid. Is this the "drug store" that I should probably not use?

Well, using tanning lotions with mineral oil in them is bad for the arylics on the beds. A lot of salons won't allow them. If you buy tanning lotions from your salon you are getting a lotion that has better ingredients and is better quality.

Definetly do NOT use a lotion with mineral oil in the tanning beds! Thats a HUGE no no.
