View Full Version : Mystic Tan Disaster
I did my first Mystic spray on tan session last night. I am going to Hawaii next week, and figured I'd get a little starter tan before I left. I am very fair complected, however, I am able to tan. Anyway - the guy working at the salon explained everything to me. I put the 'barrier cream' on the necessary areas, and made sure my shower-cap wasn't over my hairline. I went home and did not shower - just went to bed.
This morning - I look horrible. My legs are completed streaked up - my hands and feet look like I've been working in the dirt for 30 years. HORRIBLE. I have no idea what I did wrong, but it is obvious something did not go right.
My question is. . . How in the heck do I quicken the process of getting rid of, or fading this so called "tan?" Is there anything I can do to make it fade sooner? The guy at the salon told me it fades in 4-7 days. But I was it gone SOONER! I look hideous!
Thank you!
Zo
You have a couple or 3 good options. First you could go do another session. The second session covers up a world of mistakes from a bad first session. Second you can get the tan off by using lemon juice or the clorox cleaning wipes. Sometimes just rubbing the streaked areas with the cleaning wipes will take care of the streaks without removing the tan. Also just bathing and exfoliating will remove much of it if you do it a lot. Either way you go sorry you had a problem and good luck!

I would EXFOLIATE really well first!!!

you have to exfoliate very well BEFORE you go as well, that may have been your problem. but to remove it, i would suggest using, like rich said, some sort of baby wipe or cleaning wipe on your body. i've used those 'toner' wipes things from clinique, they take off self-tanner quickly due to the alcohol content. then maybe you can try again, but exfoliate very well first! hope i've helped.

Have you showered yet? The bronzer may appear uneven or streaky in the morning if you sweat during the night. The "dirty" look leads me to believe it is bronzer and that after you shower your color will be much more even. If it was your first experience, you may need to experiment with your feet which can be tricky. Best bet is to put barrier cream all over the tops of your feet.
If you have areas that are darker because you had dry skin patches (exfoliating and moisturizing it the KEY to a great Mystic), then you can use baking soda to smooth it out. It is great as it exfoliates and leaves your skin soft. Please do not use Clorox wipes, comet, fingernail polish remover, bleach, or anything not intended for your skin. A little baking soda mixed with water to form a paste will work wonders.

Oh, yeah, I forgot to tell you DON'T use clorox and stuff like that. Good advice, baked!!
Thank you for the advice. Yes, I have showered since doing my Mystic Tan application last night. I scrubbed my skin and nothing! My hands and feet both look so "dirty." So nasty looking!
Okay - when you say exfoliate, forgive me for sounding like a retard, but could you elaborate? Exfoliation, as in just putting on lotion? Using a scrub?
Everyone at my work this morning say they think it looks very good, very sexy. However, I will be wearing a bathing suit 90% of next week, and I don't want a streaky body!
Thanks!

I mean exfoliating as in using some sort of body scrub. Hope I've helped!

Don't forget to use sunscreen while you're in Hawaii. Mystic Tan is not a "tan", and you will still burn. You will not have the protection from the sun that a tan offers.

i have used the mystic and never had a problem. how long after u got sprayed did u go to bed, did you put a THICK layer of barrier cream on your hands? it dries pretty quickly i know i slathered that stuff on. and yea exfoliation helps b4 u do it. did u put any kind of moisturizer on b4 u did it? moist skin will help it absorbs more evenly if your skin is drier in other parts than others it will absorb more of the solution in the dry areas (making a streaky appearance) i always did the mystic after tanning so i had my tanning lotion on to moisturize b4 i went in. and yes bunny is right. the mystic will not "tan" you and will offer NO protection from the sun.

i did the mystic once and got pretty good results. i have very fair skin and it darkend me up pretty nice. this was when i was not using the tanning beds. they told me to have no lotion on whats so ever and to exfoliate well the night before. the only problem i noticed was that my face started to peel and chip away so it didnt look so great. this started happening 2 days later. my makeup wouldnt even cover it. i would like to try another mystic now over my tan that i get from the beds. i think it would look really nice. hopefully the same thing wont happen to my face again though.

The 2 most important things to remember when doing the mystic tan are 1)use plenty of barrier cream, and 2)REALLY towel off after the jets turn off. If you just pat dry, you will be streaked. Towel off just as firmly as you would coming out of a shower.

yes that is exactly it, towel off like you do after a shower. and remember to check the backs of your knees for collected solution

subunny made a good point, mystic tan does not help your skin tolerate the sun better. Tanning in a regular bed prior to the trip would be your best bet.

If you put any type of lotion on before using the mystic, it will act as a "barrier cream", just like the cream they give you. I've taken a shower, put on regular tanning lotion, and 3 hours later put on sunless tanner. i waited 12 hours and didn't see ANY result because the tanning lotion acted as a barier cream. please don't put any lotion on before, other then the barrier cream or you might not get results! Also, the mystic gives great color, its all in how well you are at it. hope your next session is better .

THIS IS EXACTLY WHY I AM PETRIFIED...DEFINITELY NOT DOING IT NOW!
Hey Light, you have got to go try it. You are a co-owner of a tanning salon. You need to get up to speed on what sprayless is all about. As a salon owner you need to know as much as you can. What happens if your salon decides to add sunless? You need to be an informed partner, it does not matter if you love it or not. That is up to you. All I am saying is you have to be informed.

you are so right. I know that we were looking into getting one for awhile but then once the streaky problems started to arise, we avoided it. I do need to be informed though...either way i'd be an example right?
If the booth is used correctly there is very very little steaking problem. It is like a HP bed, not everyone loves them but does that mean you don't get one or it won't pay for itself? Of course not. Any and every bed has its pluses and minuses. As a salon owner it is your job to know what they are and how to use them in your salon and most imoprtantly to make money with them.

PLEASE BELIEVE ME! If Mystic didn't streak me, ANYONE can do it! I'm a klutz, scatter-brained, and prone to screw-ups. I NEVER had a problem with Mystic, and believe me, I was VEEERRRRRRY worried about trying it. And it was a cakewalk!

Well I had my first Mystic Tan yesterday and its a little streaky in parts and my hands and feet are a bit stained and look a little odd. Its kinda annoyed me (but hasn't put me off further tries). I did put the barrier cream on, but I guess I might not have used enough? Should I have put loads on and not really rubbed it in? I thought I put quite a bit on my feet, but they still came out stained. To be fair (to mystic tan) I think some of this is also down to me not having done some stuff. Having read this forum (after having had the tan) I don't think I exfoliated enough before hand and also I did just pat myself down after the spray (worried I would wipe the tan off if I wiped too hard), so that might have caused some of the streaking I guess. I normally have quite dry skin on my hands, feet and elbows .. can any one reccommened a good pre-mystic tan routine to ensure I don't get freaky brown/orange stained looking hands next time?

My first experience with Mystic Tan was quite successful despite the fact that I didn't exfoliate at all! I suppose it is best to exfoliate to avoid such blunders. I'm really pale but when I had the mystic tan it really looked nice and natural, my friends both female and male thought I had a real tan and looked modelled up... so they don't all turn out to be a disaster! They do work!

I have noticed that using some regular hydrogen peroxide (a fresh bottle, not one that is months or longer old) can eliminate some of the dark spots on hands and feet. Getting damp in the shower and scubbing (not SUPER hard) with baking soda helps too. I have always been afraid of booth results too. Our salon has everything, but a lot of people gravitate toward the airbrush tanning because they are scared of booths too. I've heard good thing and bad things about them. But I do know that much of the result depends on how the client has prepared their skin beforehand.

Been there, done that. Mist-On covers up Mystic streaks pretty good.
I usually do Mist-On, so I don't have those problems. But Mystics are much closer to me, so sometimes I use them when I'm in a rush. I usually get Mystic to work OK, but sometimes I get streaks on the back of my legs. I just wear long pants until I can get a Mist-On. The Mist-On is a lot darker than Mystic so it covers up the streaks good enough that you really have to look close to tell there ever were streaks there.

Let me first say that I own two Hollywood Tans salons, so I may seem biased. I have over 100 customers who came to us after trying Mystic Tan. Many have complained of the "dirty" look. I checked out Mystic Tan myself (I sent an employee of mine over there to try it out), and here are my thoughts:
* Mystic Tan sprays you with self tanner (DHA) for 30 seconds or longer. It is my totally unscientific opinion (this is simply based on over 1000 Instant Tan sessions done in my two salons in the last 8 months) that the human body can only absorb so much DHA solution. Anything beyond a few seconds worth tends to look "dirty" as it is not properly absorbed into the skin.
* Beware of self tanning booths that only have 2 nozzles and make you spin around after a certain number of seconds. For examples of how this can go wrong, just refer to that Friends episode. Our Instant Tan booths have 9 nozzles each, and there's no need to turn around in them.
* Beware of self tan booths that require you to pay extra for "extra darkness". You're just asking to be streaked and/or to look dirty. Once again, it's my opinion that your skin can really only absorb so much DHA solution in one session.
Six second booths just work better, IMO. That being said, just make sure of the following:
1. That the DHA solution is high quality, and purchased from a reputable manufacturer.
2. That the DHA solution is stored in plastic or non-metal storage units, as it tends to go "funky" when stored in metal over long periods of time (our stainless steel Instant Tan booths are equipped with plastic storage units for the solution itself).
3. That there are 360 or close to 360 degrees of spray exposure in the booth. You really need a minimum of 6 nozzles to ensure you're being sprayed all over (3 at head to shoulder height around you, and 3 at leg level around you, each set positioned at 12 o'clock, 4:30 and 7:30).
4. That your skin is properly moisturized prior to and after the self tanning session.
I've got hundreds of happy clients that love to spray tan. As I know they all use the same high quality products, I'd recommend any Hollywood Tans Instant Tan booth as a positive (and quick!) spray tan experience.
Feel free to email me with any questions.

When I tried the mystic it made me nice and dark and this was when I was pale as a ghost and had never tanned before. I dont know what went wrong with me but after 2 days it started to crack kinda and look like I had dirty skin. Mostly this happend on my face so I had to exfoliate it all off my face. I havent tried the mystic since but maybe now that Im tanned from the beds it will look better.

I just rec'd an email from mystic tan & thought I'd share some of it with you.
Body wash or exfoliating products with any glycerin, mineral oil, nut, botanical or fruit oils;shea butter;cocoa butter, etc. will inhibit the absorption or development of the mystic.

I agree with them, and the same rules apply for all sunless tanning products, although I've never personally experienced a problem with glycerin-based products if I wait about thirty minutes before application.
One trick to really clear the path for DHA and erythrulose to absorb is to use a clarifying shampoo on your skin, instead of normal body wash, before applying your sunless tanner. All I have to do to get a tan to go completely away is get in a pool or bathtub. Takes it right off, even when I don't want it to. (Hi by the way! I'm new)Being both a swimmer and a sunless tanner, I must agree with you :). The entire tan doesn't come off for me, but I don't get as long of a wear time with my sunless tan because I swim regularly.

My second time using Mystic Tan was a disaster, too. I think this was due to the fact that I selected the "with bronzer" option. I won't make that mistake again.
My first experience with Mystic Tan was impressive. I was attending an event, where I wanted to be as dark as I could get in the short window of time that I had to do so. I was anxious, but also hesitant, about Mystic Tan, but I decided to throw caution to the wind.
Before my MT session, I spent 12 minutes (max. time) in the Orbit bed without applying lotion. I then went directly into the MT booth and applied lots and lots of barrier cream to my hands and fingernails (okay, I a was a bit paranoid - but it worked). First, I rubbed the barrier cream into my hands, but then I applied more without rubbing it in. I used the footwear provided as well as the cap for my hair. After the session, I toweled myself off carefully, working from my feet up (as the MT video illustrated). I did not shower for at least 4 hours afterwards. My first Mystic Tan lasted about 8 days.:D
I was amazed at how even and dark my MT tan was - without the bronzer! I wish I had not chosen the bronzer the second time around.

Coming from Florida to Texas, I really ended up losing the color I had. On the first session, I received only the Mystic. The results were incredible! A little bit of DHA accumulation aka "dirty look" on the back of my hand, but really not that noticable.
The second session (the next day) I tanned in a mid-level bed and then afterwards did the mystic again, both times I used the clear spray as opposed to the bronzer. This evened out any inconsistencies. All in all, the experience was great and I will definately use the same technique.

best alternative to mystic tan i've tried- neutrogena micromist sunless tanning spray. it's cheap ($10-12 for a bottle/can you can use around 3 times), easy (i've never had even one streak with it), and looks pretty natural. you also avoid getting too much on your hands/feet (NEVER spray your feet- let the mist fall on it), hairline, face, etc.

I did my first Mystic tan yesterday. I have red hair and am very pale, so I wanted to look good since it's warm out now. I didnt, however, know enough about it, like to exfoliate really good before going. From my chest down I am flawless. It looks VERY good. But, my arms are a huge problem. I put my arms the way the lady told me to, exactly. They have white blotches though, and I have a few dark spots on my hands. That's about it. So I would try it again, just making sure everything is proper.
