My black lab died. She was only 9 years old. I don't know why at all. First time I have ever lost anyone in my life. It's the weirdest saddest feeling ever. The night before she didn't seem hungry, but I didn't really think about it. Anyone know what could have happened? Her eyes were open also which makes me think she did not die in her sleep softly.

I am so sorry to hear this. She very well could of passed quietly and comfortably in her sleep. I am very sorry for your loss. I would maybe contact your vet and ask them what to do next, and see what they can do to give you some answers and comfort to her passing. Take care and hang in there.
I'm so sorry for your loss. I know how hard it can be to lose a pet, pets are like members of the family, like you and I. I don't know if you'll want to read this now, but maybe a little later. It is very emotional, but I felt better after reading and still do sometimes. This really helped when we had to put down my poodle several years ago, it's a poem called "Rainbow Bridge":

Thanks yall.
Right now I am confused. Thankfully, my mother is helping me out. She has her covered and she called a local place that can eco friendly bury her at a landfill park place if I don't want to bury her at the house. I don't think I want to even look at her or even think of being the one to bury her.

Oh wow. Im so sorry to hear that. I have a yellow lab, she is also 9 and I would be devastated beyond....anything if she was to die. Just hearing about your dog, makes my heart ache for you. If you need to talk about it, we are all here, via PM or just the board.

I'm really sorry to hear this :( We had to put my 9 year old shih-tzu to sleep last march. She was the love of my life - and it was the hardest decision we've ever had to make, I still regret it, but she had cancer so we only would have been prolonging her suffering, but we loved her so much that we let her go.
ALso, don't fret, I'm sure she went peacefully. Unlike in the movies, dogs eyes don't actually close when they die. When we put my dog to sleep, after she was gone my mom looked up and asked the vet "she's going to close her eyes now right?" and he told us dogs don't infact close their eyes when they die - and she went in the mostpeaceful way possible. I empathize with your loss, I am so sorry!

My very sincere condolences.
May I suggest in a very heartfelt way that you honor her by giving her the burial yourself. I think you'll find peace that way.
All dogs go to heaven.

I am so sorry for your loss. It is awful losing a pet-they are your best friend no matter what. It makes me so sad to hear that. I am a crazy animal person-I would have one of every kind if I had the space and land for them! :)
If you need anything, feel free to message me. I know we are probably hundreds of miles apart but talking about it is the best thing to do. Keeping it all inside is the worst.
It may give you some type of closure being able to see her being put in her final resting place. It will be extremely hard but at least you will know she is resting in animal heaven and is playing with all the other little animals. I was told this when I was a kid-my calico kitty got ran over and mom explained it to me like that. I have stuck with that to this day and know that when an animal dies, it goes to heaven and is with all the other animals in a good place. Who knows, my calico, my ferret, my Poochie, my black lab, my 2 border collies and their puppies, my boss' kid's guinea pig and your lab could be all hanging out together right now. It is never too hot or too cold, there is always plenty of food and water for them there.
I know that is really, really cheesy and may not be your belief so please don't take offense to it. It is something that makes me feel better when something bad happens to our wonderful little critters.

That's really sad, I'm sorry to hear your loss...losing a pet is the worst feeling. I also lost my black lab about a month after his ninth birthday...poor pup. Hopefully your vet can settle things and bring a little peace to the situation.
I'm really sorry to hear that. I know how hard it is to loose a pet.

I'm so sorry to hear that!!! As weird as it seems, 9 years isn't THAT young for a dog to die.
Even if her eyes were open, it doesn't mean she died in pain. My Dad died very peacefully and his eyes were open too. I think that is fairly common......
Labs are such great dogs!!! I bet you have great memories of her. I know it's hard for you that it was so sudden, but at least she wasn't really ill and suffering.
I'm glad you have God to cling to during this difficult time and I'm very sorry for your loss.

Thanks all of you for all the great messages. Been reading them on and off since yesterday. I did a lot of thinking about all the good times with her and started thinking about how much she has survived. I adopted her at just 12 weeks old. She had been abused by the owners. She survived being hit by a car at a year old. Never affected her at all, no problems with her bones or anything. Just a few scratches. Survived her fair share of hurricanes too when living in South Florida.

I'm so sorry for your loss! I had two yellow labs growing up, and they were my BEST FRIENDS! They are the most wonderful companions... even though they passed away years ago, I still cry happy tears when I think about all the good times I had with them. The poor girls were 15 years old and I was taking them rollerblading with me! They would be sooo tired but just kept going because I was!
I'm sure she is in a better place... *HUGS!*
