I applied to get into a BSU Highschool Honor Band in December and I got a letter from BSU saying I was accepted! Six people are coming from Emmett to play and I am the only 9th grader. The other five are seniors so I am a little nervous.

The pieces we are playing are:
Symphonic Dance No. 3 "Fiesta" by Clifton Williams
Dusk by Steven Bryant
Who's Who In Navy Blue by John Philip Sousa
Persistence of Time by Jim Colonna

I got first chair on all of them :D

The thing I dont like is we only have 3 practice days before the concert. We have a practice on February 1st, February 8th, and the Concert is February 9th!

Just wanted to share the good news!

That's great - Congrats!

That's Boise State?

Also, is All NW this year or next? You should submit an audition tape for that. ;)

All NW is an honor group (they have band, orchestra, choir, and jazz band) that you audition for via CD/mail-in...and the top high school students are selected from Washington, Idaho, Oregon, Wyoming, Montana, and Alaska....

Usually it's held in Portland...or some other central location. It only happens every other year.

It's lots of fun! Ask your band director about it. It's similar to All-State but obviously it's all 6 nw states.

Sorry, left out this...

You actually go to the city it's held in for a three day weekend (actually, it might be 4 days - I can't remember) for tons of rehearsals and then the final performance on Sunday. They put you up in a hotel. My HS always paid for the whole thing. I think most all schools do.

Here's a link to last year's info:
http://www.menc.org/connect/conf/division/northwest.html

It's put on through MENC. Looks like it will not be on 08 since they had one last year. So, come fall of this year, get your audition CD in because they will have it in 09!!!

Good job!

Think of the short rehearsal as practice for the big leagues. In pro bands you might get a couple of run-throughs; every now and then you get the chart right before the show and sight-read it. If it's not in the right key for the singer, you may even have to sight-transpose. It'll definately improve your chops!

Well, I went today.

I had no idea we had to audition on these pieces of music!!!!!:?
I was so scared that I almost passed out when I went up in front of the people. I completely murdered 2 of the songs we did so they moved me down to second chair. I was especially nervous when I found out that the judge people were all flute majors. There were 21 flutes that auditioned anf 4 got kicked out. Myself and one other freshman where the only ones there. The rest were 11th or 12th grade. And she got 1st chair with all the solos! So I am happy that I just didn't get kicked out!:)
