Ok, it's now the time of year to alternate indoor and outdoor tanning. What do you guys use outside/by the pool/at the beach? I tend to use up older bottles of lotion that I've got around; usually step 2 accelerators or things that have nice skin feel, like Hempz or Smoke. While in St. Martin I used up the last of my JA Titanium outside, and I used SB Safire one nice Sunday a few weeks back here in Austin. Caution on the tingles outdoors though; you need to have a high tolerance for them! Still, tanning outdoors REALLY deepens your color!

I was thinking the same thing since summber break is coming and my daughter is going to be wanting to go to the pool. I wasn't sure whether it was safe to use indoor lotion outside or if i shoul duse on outdoor lotion so I have the spf protection.

I use my indoor tanning lotion outdoors when i go to the lake or do yardwork.... It really does deepen the color quite a bit. I should probably use more spf products when im outside, but im really kind of lazy about it.

It is critical that when you use an indoor tanning product in the outdoors, you must ALWAYS wear an SPF on top of this indoor lotion...
Tingles are a gigantic NO NO...because a person can get severely burned in the outdoors with this type of lotion...
Without an SPF in the outdoors, OVEREXPOSURE MAY occur, no matter how dark you already are...
And you do not want to ruin your tan because of this...
Take care of your skin!

no overexposure will not happen everytime. i lay out for a couple hours and don't burn at all but if were to lay out all day with no spf i'd burn.
Still, tanning outdoors REALLY deepens your color!

Absolutely, due to receiving more UVR in the "B" spectrum (280nm-320nm)...this frequency is what actually causes the formation of NEW melanin granules. On the other hand UVB is also what is mostly responsible for sunburns. So due care must be taken of course, as mentioned in the previous post. But it's all a function of exposure time. If you stay just a while you won't be overxposed. But of you plan to stay more than 30-40 minutes you definitely need a lotion with either a chemical or physical suncreen, especially for the UVB spectrum. See: http://tan-aid.com/TanningGlossary.html#Suns creens for a list of suncreen substances and their properties.
p.s. Anya is right on exposure time, it's all a matter of skin type...[ This Message was edited by: PJ on 2003-05-21 12:24 ]

It does deepen color, but be very careful outside with your exposure schedule and wear SPF.

Who has time to tan outside?

It's too hot here to sun outside. Plus, I'm spoiled by the twenty minute thing. I don't know how I used to do it. But, if we're at the beach or pool, I usually tend to use my cheapest lotions. I usually don't use an spf, cause we aren't outside that long with my little one being allergic to sunscreen. If we are outside a long time, it's usually under some type of covering.
Can someone recommend a sunscreen for her? We've tried everything at wal-mart. And the salons here don't carry spf.

Not me! That's why I tan indoors. If I do have any free time I can set aside for outdoor sun basking, its either too hot, cloudy / rainy, or I have a bunch of other mainly indoor things to do.
Back when I was in Jr. / Sr. high school, I laid out almost every day during summer vacation. Man, I miss those days!!!
{parrot mode} rawwpp! always use SPF outside! {/parrot mode}

Thanks! I need something for her before Sunday. We'll be on base, and she's gonna fry if I can't find something. She's allergic to all the coppertone stuff.

I'm gonna buy some and test it on her tomorrow. We've tried Bullfrog, coppertone, hawaiian tropic. And I think we've tried banana boat, but I looked and couldn't find it here. So maybe we haven't.

My daughter is also allergic to sunscreen. Her dermatologist said that it was zinc oxide, and that any "oxide" ingredient will cause the same kind of rash. She reccomended Neutrogena Sensitive Skin formula. It's SPF 30, and costs less than 10.00 at Wal Mart. That has been the only thing that she can use. She's only 4, so I try to keep her out of the sun as much as possible anyway. I hope this helps you.
