by Christine:

Correctly identification of skin types and skin conditions is key in successfully selecting effective product choosing. There are as many subtle variations to skin types and conditions as humans but certain prevalent characteristics allow us to group skin types into three classes and skin conditions fall into six classes.
In most cases an individual will have a combination skin type and one skin condition.

Knowing what class you fall into will help you to better understand why some products will work great for you.. and others not so well.

Skin types are hereditary and are the result of oil gland functioning. Skin types can be put into the three categories. Normal, Oily and Dry. In most people they will be a combination like Normal to Dry meaning.. My nose and cheeks are normal in balance but my chin and forehead is on the dry side. ( follow how this works?).. Of course these skin types happen in a varying degree.. such as very dry or very very oily..slightly dry or slightly oily.
One thing that confuses most people is when they say they are oily/dry.. This usually happens when the individuals skin has been very oily and all of the sudden the oily skin looses moisture and begins to get overly dry. This is common.. Use of astringents, soaps, scrubs in an attempt to rid ones self of the excess oil can produce the dryness..
The dryness is the “condition” of the skin. (follow?)
People are so obsessed with the oil..they for get about moisture.. Most people who have oily skin say “I don’t need a moisturizer, I’m oily enough” Remember moisture is not oil! Look for a “oil free moisturizer”, but you must use moisture.

Normal Skin: To be honest, I don’t think any of us have had normal skin since we were 12. Normal skin is perfect in hydration, muscle tone, resilience that is produced by moisture in the adipose tissues. In Normal skin there is strong activity in the Basal layer and the blood circulation is active. Normal skin looks smooth, soft, glowing and moist with even skin colour. The corneum layer shows a great texture and there is no sign of fine lines large/open pores or wrinkles.
Normal skin requires proper cleansing Am. and PM. Being consistant with moisturizers during the day to prevent moisture loss is important, and hydrating crèmes in the evening is important.
An occasional light exfoliation is beneficial.. and when being active in the sunshine using an SPF of 15 or higher should be practiced.
For Normal Skin type.. Less is best on the skin.. don’t load on the crèmes and lotions, a little will do wonders.

Oily Skin is due to over activity in the sebaceous glands. This activity is controlled by the androgen hormone. Oily skin can be detected by its thick, shiny firm apperance. The pores are enlarged, usually due to the oil getting trapped in the pilosebaceous follicle.
These pores become aggravated with dehydration as the condition gets worse.
Hot and humid climates tend to make the oil gland secrete more oil. Misuse of products designed to get the oil under control cause huge problems for individuals with this skin type. Over stimulating the skin will cause problems. Even massaging this type of skin too much should be avoided.
AHA and BETA products can improve this type of skin. Look for products that have botanicals that are active to embrace for your skincare on a regular basis. Follow the directions on the use of these products.. Don't over due it..
Gently clean the skin AM and PM and be sure you are keeping the skin hydrated.. Remember oil and moisture are two different things, as I mentioned before.

Dry Skin is due to under activity of the sebaceous gland. All body activities slow down.
Oil is reduced and the ability to retain moisture is not easy. Dry skin is noted to have fine or deep lines, overly delicate and thinner than normal or oily skin. The lack of oil being produced deprives the skin of it “glue” to retain cells in the corneum layer. The result is fewer cells in this layer of skin…
Improper skincare makes this type of skin worse.

Care for this type of skin includes a daytime protection using products with a sealant such as silicone or collagen based treatment. These types of products form a barrier on the skin and help to prevent moisture loss. Vitamin E, ginseng, dandelion extract, avacado oil, macadamia nut oil and hyaluronic acid can help improve the dry skin individual. Look for these properties in your cremes and lotions.

I hope this helps you find out what type of skin you have.. and you begin to treat it the way it should be treated..
Remember when you look good… You feel good….

here is a great post by her about DEHYDRATED skin. I never knew there was a difference between dry and dehydrated skin.

Today lets look at One of the most common.. Dehydration.
It means lack of sufficient moisture in the cellular system and the intercellular channels.
The look of dehydration is flaky, dry and scaly..The skin feels tight…..When you tug at the skin it “crinkles” like tissue paper..
I’m sure ya’ll see quite a few of your guests who tan with you that have this look..
The skin also may look as if there is additional thin layer of skin placed on top of it.
(this thin tissue layer look will appear on the nose and forehead.. note closely at the individual.. do not mistake dehydration for dryness).

Dehydration is caused by a lot of perspiration of the individual..the lack of producing enough sebum can not prevent the evaporation of the natural moisture.. maybe the individual has a weak metabolism but most likely if they are under 50 years of age and have this condition they lack in their intake of water. ( go back and read the thread about WATER if you have questions regarding H2O intake)..

This condition can become worse due to atmosphere…too much sun, wind, not using a good sun protection when you are outdoor playing or relaxing.. It can also be aggravated by not using the proper skin care products on the skin. Using a harsh soap…..drinking too much coffee, soda pop, teas…. taking a diuretic medication can cause this condition..
There are quite a few reasons why dehydration can occur.

Dehydration is one of the hardest conditions to diagnose. It is most of the time confused with dryness….because of the lack of oil in the skin. Dry skin can be dehydrated because of the lack of moisture retention.
But remember both oily and dry skin can be dehydrated.

When the moisture is lost in the skin the surface layers become hard and block oil secretion.. remember it is having a hard time retaining the moisture level needed..
This is very bad ( and can be painful) when this condition happens to an individual with Acne.. the oil traps in the corneum layer and thus the infection is also trapped.. ( follow?)

…… I feel it is best to first diagnose the skin type.. then the condition.. not the other way around..

One must use a protective moisturizer along with hydrating crème when they have this condition..
Remember using a lotion or crème moisturizer that is water binding does NOT mean you do not need a protective crème’…
Look for products containing hyaluronic acid, dimethicone, collagen , glycerin, glycolic acid, latic acid………
Every 8 days use a hydrating mask .. if super dehydrated maybe use it every 4-5 days..

Remember… you need to advise your guests you see about maintaining proper levels of moisture in the skin..

There is a whole art to this “tanning thing” we do… learn about the largest organ of the body THE SKIN.. and help your guests get the Best Possible tan in the shortest period of time..

My skin is mostly 'normal' but my forehead and nose seem to be oily all the time.
At first glance, I thought the topic meant skin type in a different context (UV sensitivity) like 1 (albino) to 6 (black).

In that case, I'm either 3A or 3B

okay question - I definitely have oily skin, my skin is the definition of oily skin - but it's also really dry. if I understand correctly (which I may not which is why I'm asking) if I mosturize more often than I do, it will improve the dryness as well as helping keep the oil down? or no? I'm so confused, lol.

I don't know about moisturizing, but I heard on TV lastnight that if you are oily skinned to not over cleanse the face. Over cleansing can cause more oil production, which can lead to more breakouts!

Mine is oily! =(.....good ol' teenage hormones!
I use Cetaphil and clean and clear astringent....it keeps me pimple free! but the oily T-zone is a major pain in the ***....i use blotting papers during the day to keep the shine down.

now that winter is here I am layering my facial products. First I apply Clinique's Moisture Surge Extra to give my skin the hydration it needs.... then after 15 minutes or so I apply philosophy's Hope in a Jar to form a water-binding and protective barrier on the skin. It's working out great!

Chica I ordered Hope in a Jar. I had trouble deciding between hope in a jar and hope in a bottle.

Since hope in a Jar says its for all skin types and oil free I figure I'll try it. Hope it doesn't break me out!.

Hope in a Jar and Hope in a Bottle are 2 totally different things.... Hope in a Jar is an awesome water-binding protective moisturizer. Hope in a Bottle is called an "adult acne treatment". I only know this because I received it as a free gift when I ordered Hope in a Jar from drugstore.com... I gave it to my sister....

I'm probably dehydrated and combo. I guzzle diet coke like they'll be taking if off the market and I love coffee, especially when it is cold (though any time is fine). Just bought a new coffee pot with a timer so that I can wake up to it and (best part) an automatic shut off-I am VERY likely to forget.

I think I'm inbetween a normal and dehydrated. I've never had any problems with my skin, no blemishes, oilyness or acne. The only problem I've ever had with my skin is that is dries out a little bit during the winter months.

I love Clinique's Moisture Surge Extra when my skin is dehydrated. It is a light super-hydrating gel that give me the moisture I need.

I am either drinking coffee or tea....lol...I do fight dry skin...I have been using MK's face care products and have not been really impressed by them...but hard to break a habit when it comes to skin care......any good suggestions for routine face care?

I have dehydrated dry skin.... I like to use a thin layer of Clinique's Moisture Surge Extra hydrating gel immediately after showering. Then I layer a bit of philosophy's Hope in a Jar on top to bind to the moisture and form a protective layer during the day. Both of these products are quite pricey ($40 per jar) so I try to use only as much as necessary. I also sleep with a humidifier on for my asthma... but it helps my skin as well.

Hmmmm will have to give them a try.....,my MK stuff just does not keep my face moist at all even when not tanning...and I have tried all of their age fighting products....Ohhhh I didn't think about the humidifier!!! that is a great Idea..we have some real cold weather here and the heater is always running..so means very dry air...

it's all a trial and error process. I'm still trying new products.... unfortunately, I am usually disappointed b/c I'm always looking for a more affordable alternative. Then I wind up spending $100 on products that I don't even really like!

those 2 mentioned above are the most effective thus far for me.
