Welcome to the board Absolut, Enjoy
Yes, you definitely want to use lotion, so your skin doesn't get to dry while tanning. Moisturizers are always a plus also. A good tan and Moisturized skin go hand in hand I'm sure you'll get more suggestions, but these are mine
Enjoy the board, and Happy Tanning

Welcome to the board!! I've tanned without tanning lotions for years and I was still able to get really dark. I think using tanning lotions you get darker faster and see better results. Since you get darker faster you also save more money on tanning sessions. They also keep your skin moisturized and moisturized skin tans better than dry skin. I really do think tanning with lotion makes a big difference.

Yes,and will keep your skin in good shape. We all know tanning has risks but using a really good lotion can help minimize them!

Using tanning lotion is a plus everything that's being said is true, the only thing I never see on here is how lotions help with elasticity, (premature wrinkles)

Well, define "necessary". Will you get color without lotion? Sure. Will you get as dark as fast? Probably not. Will your skin look and feel as healthy without lotion? Definitely not.

Well, in my case, I'm unable to get anything from tanning without any lotion. But, then again, I have a very difficult time achieving a good tan. It also dries out your skin badly if you don't use some form of tanning lotion.

You don't go to the beach without sunscreen or lotion, same rule applies with tanning beds, never go without it. Good Luck and welcome.

Is there a reason why you don't want to use them? Using a lotion will help you tan faster and help keep your skin in better shape.

I used to tan without lotion and got good color.... but my skin was totally dried out... Since using lotion, my color has darkened tremendously and my skin is soft and in great condition. Lotion helps you to tan faster which means that you can tan less often, like BrownJen said.

I'd never tan without lotion again...

I don't think there is a NEED for using a lotion, but it definately helps out.

You could tan without lotion but your skin would be dry and not look nearly as good as if you used a good lotion!

It definately gives yo way better color and elps moisturize, but other than that you do not NEED a lotion.

And while on the suject of lotions, remember that it is not necessary to spend hundreds of dollars on lotions. Most indoor lotions (except "bronzers" and "tingles") are nothing but moisturizers. Get in the habit of looking at the ingredients on the back panel of these products and you will see that most are very similar, from the inexpensive to the ridiculously expensive. So there's no need to spend $30-$40 on a lotion, which is nothing but mark-up. The average cost of manufacturing a lotion is some $1, $2 top, per bottle, and even less if the manufacturer buys large quantities. So these high prices are artificially sustained, and there's nothing in them that actually justifies it. That's why I always tell people to look at the ingredients and see for themselves.

Remember to moisturize with a tan extending moisturizer also - The better condition that your skin is in will also help to maintain your tan longer

I've always tanned with lotion, and my skin's always looked healthy, tanning without lotion will dehydrate your skin tending you to self-exfoliate quicker.. therefore not being able to keep your tan very long... always use lotion and moistuirizer, since a Healthy tan and moisturized skin go Hand in hand
