My sister-in-law went to a little salon the other day. She hadn't tanned in over a year and they told her to start at 20 minutes! The only type of units they had were stand-ups and I'm guessing they have never changed the bulbs. She tanned the full 20 mins, and yes, she did burn, but not too bad.

Can you believe that!!

no I can't. If I were her, I'd raise holy **** the next time I went in there.

Same thing happened here (advised 20 minutes) and I burned severely the last time I tanned in a salon (hair). I was neon white.

i would definately raise a stink... telling them that letting you burn is inexcusable, and if they were properly trained they'd NEVER EVER let ANYONE burn

i'd ask for my money back and find another salon, the only way to combat that kind of thing is with your wallet

That happened to me my first year tanning indoors.

HOwever, now I'm able to gauge my own progress and I TELL THEM what minutes I want.

anya is correct. the only thing that some salons understand is their bottom line...

The salon is lucky that no one has ratted on them yet (to the attorney general). If they suggest a pale indivudual should tan for 20 minutes, I would call their professionalism and competence into serious question. And yes, I would raise bloody **** if that happened to me.
Even if the bulbs are old, that's beside the point.

IT's just bad business! You want to help your customers as much as possible, not hurt them!

They let me go 25 mins my first time.. but actually, I did not burn. I was a little pink for a few hours, but then it turned into tan. I would never ever ever advise anyone to do this though.

my salon fortunately has base beds with very very low uvb so i've NEVER ever burned in them

I wish our beds had low uvb.

The salon I go to has 10 minute beds with lower uvb than the 20 minute beds. I have been up to 10 minutes in the 10 minute bed now for a couple weeks, but they'll only put me in the 20 minute for 12 minutes.

NJ - I almost had a heart attack I though you said "the only thing salons understand is there bottom line" I had to reread to see you said SOME LOL!

If the salon that is recommending this kind of ignorant tan time is in a regulated state (Ohio is regulated) you can complain and they could lose there license. If it was my salon I would want to no which employee to fire.

Also if they are not stopped there going to really hurt someone. Shameful

I can't even imagine someone without a few sessions under their belt going 20 minutes in a bed let alone someone who hadn't tanned in over a year. That's just bad business allowing clients to burn.

obviously some salons don't care as much about their customers as other places

I would not havetanned nore then 3-5 minutes the first time. What in the world was theythinkingletting some one tan at20 minutes there first time. I would find a new place to tan and let them know how i felt about that.

It is amazing that a salon professional would advocate going in a bed for 20 minutes the first time someone has tanned in a year. It seems that many salons i have encountered seem to want to eer on the side of allowing a client to go for too small of an amount of time in a bed, rather than too long. Doesnt the salon want customers to keep coming back? It seems a burn would be bad if the salon was hoping for that person's repeat business.......

Yeah, the first time I went she told me to keep pushing the button on the right till it got to 20.. and then, i didn't know that was the time. But, I told her I didn't know how to work it and so she went in the room and she was like "You want to go 20?" and I was like "I only want to go 5" and so... yeah.. and she asked earlier while I was filling out the paper thing if I've ever tanned THERE before.

You were allowed to set your own timer? Is Alabama not regulated? That is soooooo illegal in Texas!

I find its mostly in the smaller hair salons - The owner will buy a bed and know nothing about it other than if its a 20 minute bed , they tell everyone to go in for 20 minutes. Thats what it's like in all three of the hair salons up here - They have no knowledge at all. Fortunately for me I never really got a burn because my skin is pretty dark, but I've seen quite a few people walk out burned up.

It was the only bed like that. All the others they set with whatever they used. But, its not like that anymore. This is the only county in Alabama that has those people to look at the beds and put that sticker on them or whatever.
