View Full Version : Info on Mystic Tan
A friend just forwarded this to me, I wanted to pass it along:
n case any of you are doing the Mystic Tan on a regular basis, I want to pass along some info I heard... I was talking to a girlfriend yesterday and told her how much I loved this spray tanning booth. Well, her father owns a tanning salon; he told her that in the next year or two the government is likely to require tanning salons to post a clear warning about Mystic Tanning because some of the chemicals that are inhaled in the process are extremely harmful to your health. She wasn't sure if they cause cancer or not, but apparently the chemicals are pretty harmful to your internal system. My friend seemed to think that an occasional Mystic Tan is not going to kill you, but habitually doing it is definitely bad for your health.
Apparently, this is not public knowledge yet. (I hadn't heard of it.) Just food for thought...

I'm pretty sure this is just a rumor. If your afraid, just hold your breath - it's only 20 seconds (and well worth it)

I had heard that if you do not towel off right it could streak, is this true?

I believe mtee may be right on this one based on what I have read on other message boards; however, there will be a lot more research on this before it is settled I am sure.
The FDA did come out with a rather strong statment and then revamped it so it was not as harsh but there are some clear indicators that some much needed testing was not done prior to the spray systems like Mystic Tan being implemented.

if DHA (the main ingrediant in sunless tanners) was bad for your health, and breathing it in for 20 seconds is going to kill you, then I'm SURE they would've figured it out by now, considering DHA Sunless tanners have been around for 40 some years. Whether or not it "mists" out, like the Mystic Tan, they still would've known its not good for you "internally". Sometimes Pro UV people talk out their rear end and juice up the whole FDA Statement, which now says that Mystic Tans are TOTALLY safe for you.

I agree with spike's eval. The "stuff" is mostly aloe vera gel, with enough DHA in it to give you good color. I like the mystic tan, but don't feel like doing it very often, I need the relaxation of the beds!
And as for streaking, it will only streak if you do not towel off properly. Which is done just like if you were getting out of the shower, don't pat! Just rub yourself dry and you will not streak. (Believe me, if ANYONE is going to streak from this thing, it would have been me!)

Forever Tan where did you see that the FDA is now saying the Mystic Tan is Totally Safe. I was thinking of getting one for the salon I'm opening, but all the FDA talk held me back. BTW the only thing I have read on this, is that the FDA has not said it's unsafe, it is saying that they need to look into it.
some guy told me starting next year..when u go in the mystic or any spray booth you will have to wear peepers, put cotton in your nose and ears and vaseline on your lips..so it doesnt enter any mucus membranes..,i really hope thats not true!!! did anyone else here that??

My sis got this done and she got streaked majorly, she did everything they told her to do and it really didn't seem to work as well as the airbrush tans that people can do to you. I agree with some of you, I just don't see how it could be good for you to breathe all that in, even with the airbrush tan that someone sprays on you themselves, it can be a lengthy process. I got it done for prom and I just don't think those fumes seem healthy for anyone to be breathing.

Mystic tan highly recommends the use of goggles & nose wear in the booth.

The rumours come from an FDA release recommending that consumers hold their breath or wear a nose filter during a spray session. This is because the active ingredients in spray booth solution, DHA and erythrulose, have not been tested for safety should they be inhaled. This does not mean that they are dangerous, simply untested.
As far as the chemicals themselves being toxic, DHA and erythrulose have a large molecular size and can only penetrate the very top layers of skin -- they don't come anywhere near close enough to be absorbed into the bloodstream. Secondly DHA is consumed by some athletes, usually with sodium pyruvate, to help the building of lean muscle mass, and it has been cleared as safe for supplement use for years.
