Does anyone have any feedback on the tanning pills offered by Dr. Paul Maxfield, MD?

I see the ads on Google.

I know that Anya has tried some kind of tanning pills... let's wait for her to fill us in. I've never tried them so I can't help you.

I have never tried them so I can't personally say, but I have read that they do nothing. *shrugs*

I take a supplement that has 800mg of Tyrosine in it. Many tanning pills only have about 500mg. I can really tell when I'm taking the tyrosine. My color seems to last longer and be a little deeper.

I have took "tan tabs" in the past and they had just a small effect on me. The Tan Tabs that I bought were the bigger 'ultra' sized pill with 800mg (or more) of Tyrosene. As with anything, they affect everyone in varying degrees so they may or may not work for you.

I've been using Mega Tan Tabs since the winter to boost my color past my plateau; it does seem to work for me; I'm sort of on quest to get darker than I've ever been in my life and whatever helps!

Anything that is on an infomercial you probably shouldn't buy. Judging from his website I'd say those pills are pretty fake

I took the tyrosine suppliments i took about 1000mg. i did notice holding color better not sure if i got darker per say but then i never notice a darker color lol it's easier for me to tell if i am dark if someone tells me i look darker.

i'm actually going to be buying some more L-tyrosine pills this summer along with a B1 vitamin (that is supposed to keep mosquitos from biting)

Certain "tanning" pills do have color added to them that will cause one to look "orange". Tyrosine pills are just supplements with no color additives.

PJ
05-21-2003, 12:20 AM
Exactly, that is the difference between the terms "tanning pills" and "tanning supplements". The former contain beta-carotene, or its derivatives like canthaxanthin (banned by the FDA for "tanning" purposes) that artificially color your skin orange. Tanning supplements, on the other hand, contain the elements used during the tanning process (i.e. Tyrosine, Copper, Vitamin E, etc.) to increase melanin production while tanning. All the melanin produced by the body is synthesized from the amino-acid L-Tyrosine. Without this element, and the derivative enzyme Tyrosinase, there is no pigment (albinism).

Are there any adverse side effects with these pills? I'd like to get darker, but I don't want it bad enough to harm myself.

Anya1976
05-21-2003, 12:35 AM
yea i'd like to try some too

PJ

No there are no side effects whatsoever..these are vitamins, all these elements are FDA approved.

Anya1976
05-27-2003, 07:32 PM
well the tanaid pills are not something that will turn u different colors they have copper and tyrosine in them to help you get darker from UV exposure

Greta
05-27-2003, 08:17 PM
are they working out well for you?

Anya1976
05-27-2003, 08:57 PM
i've only just started them on saturday... but so far yea i'd like to take them a bit longer for some real results... i know just one bottle isn't going to make a huge difference compared to if i took them for a month or so but after i finish this bottle i will see if i will get more.

You might want to be careful with some of the pills because I read somewhere that one pill (can't remember the name) has a possibility to cause retinal damage from the ingredients in it. I'll try to find the webpage if anyone wants it.

Anya1976
05-28-2003, 12:28 AM

Ok, the pill i was thinking of is canthaxanthin. Here are some pages on it:
http://www.netpackusa.com/wdiv.htm (makes a brief mention of the eye problems at bottom of article)
http://www.vitreoussociety.org/journal/vol1no2/cases/billiris/cantha.htm (medical study about the pills effect on the eyes)

That's the pill that's supposed to turn you brown instead of having to tan, right? I read two of the articles. I don't think I'd take a dye pill. You're taking something different aren't you, Anya? The one that's supposed to boost your tanning capabilities? If I'm not making sense, tell me. I'm starting to get really sleepy. I know what I mean, I'm just not sure if I'm saying it right.

Anya1976
05-28-2003, 01:40 AM
yea u are right bunnygirl.... i am taking a pill to help tan naturally not turn me brown. and no i wouldn't take a pill that would dye me brown either (eew)

Anya1976
05-28-2003, 01:44 AM
here's a little bit from the tanaid website Quote:TAN-AID contains NO artificial dyes such as Canthaxanthin or Beta-Carotene; Each of the ingredients in TAN-AID is all-natural, and used by the body during the tanning process.

Anya1976

I think I'm taking Mega Tan Tabs, just 1000 mg of tyrosine, and copper. Hope they work! Some of the local models take them about a month before they have shoots. We'll see!

Keep in mind you also need to take B-Complex vitamins, Vitamin E, and Vitamin C (among others) along with the Tyrosine and Copper. All these are co-factors used during the conversion of Tyrosine into Melanin (this is why we incorporated everything into one formula for our TAN-AID supplements). But you can of course buy the additional vitamins and take them along with the product you mentioned. Taking all of the elements used during melanogenesis will certainly help you tan better. And finally, make sure you maintain a STEADY intake of Tyrosine through out your whole tanning cycle. This is because the body does not store Tyrosine very well, so you have to make sure to supply it as you "go along" your tanning activities, including during the day after tanning, as our bodies continue to create Melanin up to 24 hours or more after exposure to UVR.

PJ

P.S. and my thanks to Anya for trying out our product. I am glad you're happy with the results!

Anya1976
06-03-2003, 02:10 AM
well i have to say i did get darker.... i have only a day's worth of pills left. the only bad part is you get 45 pills and have to take 4 a day (or the day b4 the day of and the day after you tan and then one on the days between if u dont tan every other day or so)i will probably get some more.

PJ
06-03-2003, 02:55 AM
Actually on our next lot we are probably going to 60 count, rather than 45. We have received many requests to increase the number, mainly from hard core tanners. When we began manufacturing and selling TAN-AID the main demographic was the casual tanner, that tanned maybe every weekend, or every two weeks. That's how we got to 45. But we did not foresee the reception by those who tan much more frequently. One interesting point that was made by the marketing co. was that individuals who were frequent tanners would be much more reticent to try the product because of the bad reputation that beta-carotene/ canthaxanthin-containing products had created, thinking erroneously that our product was the same as those others. So that was another reason why we went with the lower count. And in fact we have found that it is less of a challenge to market to people who are either beginning to tan or do it casually, because they are not pre-disposed to confuse the products. And it makes sense, because if you ask people immersed in the tanning community about tanning pills, (rather than tanning SUPPLEMENTS), they will immediately say things like "Aren't those the pills that turn you orange?" etc. So you see we have our work cut out for us! Which is a shame because our supplements do really work. I see so many people post messages here asking why they are not getting any darker, or they are not getting the tan they want, and the invariable replies are "try this lotion or that lotion", and while those products are an important part of the tanning experience, there is only so much a lotion can do, and people forget to see the tanning process from the biological point of view, and the importance of the supplements. Anyway, enough writing....time to go to bed!!!

PJ

Anya1976
06-03-2003, 03:29 AM
well PJ honey u have hardcore tanners here lol so up that pill count cus that is my main con with the product... NOT ENOUGH PILLS.
but even with lotions and stuff tanning is a process cus even without suppliments you can get the tan you want it IS possible i mean **** i got way dark on my own without anything but hey i was willing to see if your product lived up to your claims, and yes i have seen a bit more color but i have also been upgrading alot and using different tingles.... i'd like to see if i'd get the same color if i was just using my regular lotions and the basic beds like i usually do... now THAT would be the test

PanAnna
06-03-2003, 03:50 AM
PJ-Received my package yesterday and started them yesterday. I am glad to hear that you are going to up the capsule count in your next production run. That's the thing about us hard core tanners, "If you educate us, we will try." Of course, I bought the three bottle special so I won't run out for a while but unlike Angela, I still have a ways to go with where I "need" to be color wise.

Anya1976
06-03-2003, 03:51 AM

pj i have a question... ok i am pretty much done with my bottle of suppliments will i be losing the color i got with them?

PJ
06-04-2003, 01:28 AM
Your tan should in fact last longer than it normally does, due to the increased melanin production. It will of course decrease in time, as all tans do, but you will certainly notice a difference in how long your tan lasts!

PJ

Anya1976
06-04-2003, 02:27 AM

PJ
06-11-2003, 01:15 PM
Our next lot will be 60-count. As for time, it all depends when we deplete the current 45's, could be anywhere from three weeks to a month or two. If the current rate stays the same (although nothing ever does) it could be in the next weeks. Summer's here and we are moving quicker, as usual. I'll keep you posted!

The pill that turns you brown w/out tanning didn't help my sister at all. And if it did, it turned her orange (She wear sunless tanners, none work on her well.). I also heard that all the color additives in those could be harmful to you.

The ones that you take to help you tan when you have a regular tanning thing, may work. I dunno.
