View Full Version : False advertising w/ HP beds

A lot of salons in my area "say" that they have HP beds, but when you go there it is actually a VHR bed with HP facial tanners! My regular salon doesn't have an HP bed (nor do they claim to) so I called another one thinking I might try out an HP bed . Well, it turned out they had a Solaris which they were calling an "HP" bed. I looked it up and found out it is VHR with HP facials. I even asked them point blank if it was all high pressure bulbs and they said yes! I made it a point to say "high pressure" becuase I had read on here that some salons say HP to mean "high peformance". I called a couple other salons and they had the same thing! This just makes me so mad Has anyone else seen salons do this type of false advertising?

They probably aren't misleading you on purpose (I hope), just misinformed.

Yes I had that happen to me at my current salon. Once I use up my credits I am outta there and off to a new salon. It makes me mad to because it is pathedic that they either own the salon or they work in a salon and are not properly informed about their beds. Thank goodness for this website or I would have never realized that it was not a high pressure bed but a high performance; I felt like I wasted money ya know?

My local salon owner also told me it was a high pressure bed and I didn't realize it wasn't until I found out the difference between high pressure and high performance from all you guys - It is a nice bed but I do think a lot of them are just not informed themselves in the little hair salon type places - they just throw a bed in a room and put up the sign "Tanning"

Same here Ladyboss, I thought hp was more related to total wattage than particular types of bulbs (although I knew there was uva or uvb to consider). I think Tamar is right, though, that it is more related to lack of knowledge than any deliberate attempt to mislead. It's true what they say-a little bit of knowledge is a very dangerous thing!

My salon has a VHR with HP facials. The are very upfront about the exact specifics of the bed. I think all the salons here try to be honest, some of the people may be just uneducated in the types of beds they are opeating.

I know they are probably just uneducated, but it just makes me mad that people don't even understand their own business. I am very new to tanning and found this website quickly and read up on everything. They own a salon and they know less then someone who has only been tanning for 3 months? It's just crazy to me. I think I might put up that I-Am-Tan flyer they were talking about in my salon so more consumers can become educated. Maybe if the customers know more then the owners and staff they'll be forced to learn too!

It really is sad how many salon owners and staff members out there in salons are this uneducated. Next time any of you see this come up. Tell them they're wrong...

I went to a new salon (well, new to me) and the owner showed me a cyberdome as their hp bed. Well, I didn't feel like explaining the whole hp deal, so I bought a pile of lotions for a very reasonable price, bought 5 cyberdome sessions for a great price and left smiling. Don't they all get those magazines for salon owners? Don't they read them?

There are two salons here that advertise HP. Neither has an hp bed. Both claim the Sundazzler standup is an HP. I did get into an arguement with one owner over it being an hp, and he finally ADMITTED that it wasn't and they just tell customers that it is. Needless to say, I don't tan there, or at the other salon.

I paid like 60 dollars for 100 minutes for a "high pressure" bed. (Now this was before I knew that they were quartz lamps) And the bed was just a normal bed.. and kinda small. AND I GOT ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!! They were not high pressure beds at all!! THey were weaker than the base beds that I use now!
I've never seen my salon misrepresent their beds. They have one all HP bed the sunboard.

i think when the owner is telling you something that isn't true, it's probably to lure ppl in under false pretenses (i can't imagine investing in and running a salon and not knowing what you're doing, but ?). i usually hear the inaccuracies from some of the girls that just haven't been educated as to the differences in beds. i just smile and suggest they check out iamtan.com.

The salons I have been to seem to know the difference. the only HP's out here are Ultrabronze beds that I know are HP's. Lots of place use the term "high intensity" which I have found can mean anything. "high performance" usually means a VHR or something like the Orbit or the Cyclone. One salon advertised beds that are "low pressure", but they actually have high pressure facial tanners on them.

Unfortunately when a salon brings in hp(hi pressure) beds, other salons in that area feel intimidated because of how powerful these beds are and they tend to false advertise to keep their clientele from going elsewhere. I can't believe it's lack of education - if you get into the tanning business, wouldn't you become an expert on your own equipment?

I have found that if it is strictly a "Tanning Salon", the owners are more informed about their equipment. The hair salons that have tanning beds just as a side business usually don't know anything about the beds....at least that's what I found in my area.

That's usually the case, but I've seen in happen in "professional"??? salons as well.

All this High Intensity/High Pressure talk is a little confusing to me. At my salon they call the bed I use HP. But it says VHR on the bed and its 11,000 watts. It has facial bubles too. Its the strongest bed they have and I get great color from it. I went to another salon one day cuz mine was closed and the girl said that the ones at my place are not HP that they just call them that. She went on to say the ones this place has are stronger and are the real HP beds. Im lost!

Kitty... HP beds will have ALL ( facial ) small purple-ish bulbs all over. SOme HP will have a matress that u lay on and flip over. HP beds will NOT have the long tube lamps in it.

Okay thanx Samsara
Well mine does have tube lamps in it so I guess the girl at the other salon was right its not a real HP.

I called my salon yesterday and asked the girl what upgrade beds they had available. She said, "You mean like HP beds?" I said yeah, that would be great, whatcha got? She told me they have the SuperSunDash and the Big Bear... which I immediately looked up here and saw that these are definitely NOT true HP beds. Anyway, went to the salon to use the SSD and asked the girls what makes a HP bed what it is, just to see if they had any clue. They looked at me with blank stares and one of them finally said that using the SSD is like getting 4 tans in one and using the Big Bear is like getting 7 tans in one. Grrrr....I may eventually get to use a real HP bed someday. If I can find a salon that knows what one is!

I know, that's what I'm afraid of! I'll be a tanning snob! I'm going to try harder to find one by this spring...it's a big town...there's gotta be one somewhere!

Ok..I'm pretty educated about all this, being in the industry and everything (thank God I don't own my own salon yet). I'm have a bit of a blonde moment here. Can one of you PM me and explain to me all the differences between High PRESSURE and High PERFORMANCE? And how would I be able to tell the difference at a salon? Could I just look at it and tell? And what do the bulbs look like in a high pressure bed? I'm so lost...I need help
