I tan at a Chain also but they only have 1 type of booth and it seems like everyone else on this board goes to some type of salon where there's all different types of beds and booths to choose from...is it normal for a chain salon to only have 1 type of booth?

I use both - I prefer the chain but it's over 60 miles so I only get to go there once a week when I travel into New York - so I have to use the local hair salon that has 1 bed, but it is a Brand New bed and the place is very clean- The chain (Beach Bum Tanning) is just soooo nice they have so many different beds to choose from and just a much more knowledgeable staff.

I just don't understand why my salon only has one type of booth since they are a chain?

I tan at a chain. All the beds are mostly the same at each salon, except for a couple types of beds. But I mostly use the base beds anyway.

I tan at a chain since it's right by my house and has a good variety of beds. That's odd you would only have one booth option. Maybe you should look for another salon?

I have tanned at chain, and privately owned salons. I have had good and bad experiences with both kinds, so I can't say that one kind is better than the other. But be sure to take a tour of the place, and know about your skin type and lotions, that way you won't be dependent on the salon's advice. I learned the hard way!

i also tan at two different chains. one, is sorta lame they only have one type of base beds but it's super cheap, $3 per session. the other chain i go to is a larger chain, has better beds, base & HP (high pressure, not performance), but it's more expensive. you have to be a member to tan there & the membership cost is a one time fee of $35. i think when chains are concerned, you get what you pay for. and the larger the chain, the nicer it will be.

I tan at an independant. The chains in my area are way to expensive, and they seem to have a superior attitude. Customer service goes a long way with me, I wont tan anywhere that doesent provide excellent customer service. The salon I tan at does it all, great prices, discount cards, monthly specials, clean, high watt base beds, upgrade standups, Magic tan booth, Excellent customer service! The only gripe would be needing appts. only because its a busy salon, and they will fit in a walk in when they can.

I tan at a "mom and pop" salon. I feel I've had a better experience. They really care about their customers, the place is small, so I feel like I get more "personal attention". My salon is also very interested in the types of lotions I like, and do a lot of special orders.
When I go to Toledo, I go to a new chain that just opened up. I will say they are great too. Since they are a chain, they offer more specials and freebies than my local salon.

I tanned at a chain once and it was HUGE...the beds were nice and I got good color from them but the one complaint I have is the rooms didnt have garbage cans or stools to put you clothes on. They had big garbage bins in the hallway so you could through your trash away on your way out (kinda impersonal if you ask me).

The salon I use is a small mom n pop operation but I love it. They are always so friendly and helpful...

I use a small local place. They have 2 locations in our town, but I don't really consider that a "chain" since they aren't anywhere else. They don't seem to have a HUGE variety of beds, maybe 4 different kinds (I'm still new to this, not sure of all the names and stuff). I may check out one of the chains, but none of them are as close to my house (small town, that's just outside a big city, so most of the chains are a 20 min drive, where as the salon I go to is literally around the corner)

I tan at a chain salon. I think it's just a local chain, but it has at least 15 stores -- they have a good variety (and number) of beds, plus the Mystic if you want to go that route. Plus I can tan at any of their stores, so I find it convenient if want to do my destressing during my lunch hour instead of after work.

I tan at a chain also, it has 5 different types of beds, the basic 20 min bed, 2 stand ups a 10 and a 12 min and the VIP which is 15 minutes and Platnium which is 10 min. They have these beds at most of the salons and i can tan at all their salons. They have a good selection of lotions also, their storebrand and AG, Swedish Beauty and Designer Skin and will order others if we request them. It is a really good chain .

I tan at a chain and prefer it over the privately owned ones that are available in my area. That's not to say that I think chains are better overall, just that this is the best in my area.

I tan at Tan It All, a chain that has seventeen locations in Austin. I like it because no matter where I am in town, I'm never too far from a salon!! The bed selection is pretty good, and if one location doesn't have what you're looking for, they can usually tell you which location does.

I tan at a local chain and I love them. I have 4 locations within 10 miles of my home and work and their hours are much better than the independents around me. Plus I don't have to book appointments and they have an amazing selection of beds to choose from. I'd never want to switch

I'm glad I'm not a chain, one place can give another place a bad name. Find a good place to tan and stick with it.

Chain salons are no good! I used to go to one, and your right, they only have one type of booth, thats no good! The salon I go to is independently owned by a couple in their late 40s. They have 3 different types of beds to choose from. i will never go to a chain salon again!

I go to a chain, and they have four different levels of beds and a stand up. Not all chain salons have only one type of booth!

That doesn't hold true for all chains, sounds like you just ended up at a bad salon.
There are plenty of great chains around that have a wide variety of beds and booths that are well maintained.

I've done both, and have enjoyed both. As long as the staff is well trained, and they keep up the beds, there really isn't a reason why one is better than another

I do a chain salon. La Tan. They have 16 booths - no lay downs. Base beds as well as 2 levels of upgrades.
For me its great. I love them compared to privately owned. I get great personal service and everyone knows me by name. Maybe its because I am in there so much? lol

i used to tan at a chain- hollywood. the downside is its extremely expensive but the upside was it was very clean and orderly. i dont like how they didnt enforce eye protection and i never used to use it when i first started. now i go to a cheaper [but still good] privately owned one and it seems to work just as good and they are very friendly. they dont have a lot of booths but its never packed so i dont wait long

I go to an independent too, there's only one major chain in Indy, and it sucks. No names mentioned *cough* (TheTanCo). I go to a small salon that's real close, and they are SOOOO nice, and have great beds.

Have any of you ever looked at your state health department websit before choosing a salon. Before I opened my own salon, I learned to always look there first. Let's just say some of the biggest chains have had some pretty nasty health code violations. (Especially Darque Tan in Houston). Things like refolding dirty towels to give to customers are things I found. I'm not saying that mom &pop joints never have problems either. Just check on the website to see what salon around you has the best record.
