Do you salon color or do it at home? If you do your own, which is your favorite brand?

I've only salon colored a few times. I used to have big chunky highlights which the salon I went to did for $2 a foil. I had to go to the salon last year when I tried to dye my hair blonde, then auburn to go "back to normal" and I looked like Pink! That was $115. OUCH!

I usually color at home. I use Garnier Nutrisse. It makes my hair feel great and it smells wonderful too! I stay away from the Revlon 10 minute stuff since it made my hair feel disgusting and washed away quick. I also stay away from Feria since it burns my head

I have NEVER colored my own hair!!!! Scares me to death....my hair is pretty bleached out and if I did it myself I'd probably have straw.

Just got mine done again yesterday at the salon though. Last time I got it done at home I had to get at least 2 inches cut off because it was like dryer lint! I got low lights and high lights. It's pretty cool but a few people don't like it. I do so it doesn't matter!

I always do my hair at home. I have done it blonde, brown and red. I have had some colors that I didn't expect, but usually, it turns out just fine. I would love to get it done at a salon, I just don't have the funds for it right now. Someday....

I need to get mine done. RIght now, its REALLY DARK! Too dark for my skin color. My face is tan, but the hair makes me look pale, so I always wear it in a ponytail or like a messy bun.

I used to go and get the foil done at the salon - but I've been doing it myself for a few years - I never have the time to spend in the salon - it took a couple of hours cause I had it dyed and then highlighted - now I use Revlon Highlighting Kit and then I use a medium blonde hair dye over the Heavy highlighting, it comes out really good- I was using the garnier hair dye but last time I tried the new Revlon (10 minute) and it worked really well. I've gotten alot of compliments on my hair color. Hopefully it comes out just as good when its time to do it again!

i dye my hair at home i can't afford to get it done at the salon my roots need to be done now but i am lazy lol the last hair color i bought was l'oreal's open i used the color osiris (cool medium blonde) i naturally have dark blonde hair so i just wanted to go a little lighter and at first i thought this color was going to be too dark (since my ends were so light b4 i colored it. but i really liked it and will do it the same color again (when i finally get my butt to the store to buy it lol)

there is a revlon color that burns the crap outta my scalp it's the cheapest brand they have i can't think of it, it's in the black box... but it's like 3 dollars a box i used it once and did a regular ash blonde color nothing too too light (i had done my hair that color for years) and i couldn't leave the color on for the full time i want to say i had it on for 15 mins and my scalp was on fire i had to run to the bathroom and wash it out. needless to say a day or two later my scalp was one big scab (it looked sooooooooooooo attractive too)looked like HUGE flakes of dandruff.i'll never use THAT brand again.

I used to get my hair dyed at a salon about a year ago, but I just wanted to go back to my natural color. I've had it highlighted with dark golden blonde ($100) once, I've had dark brown and light golden blonde chuncks ($150) twice, and then I had it died back to medium brown ($80) which looked awful since my natural hair is more golden than brown. I think for now, I'll stick with my hair the way it is, but I've been wanting to dye it a bright auburn and then put orange-gold streakes through it. It sounds weird, but a girl I knew had it and it looked really pretty.

Teresa....don't be scared of at home coloring. I actually get compliments from my salon for the work I do on my own. They have so many formulas out there now with low ammonia and there are even some natural brands at health food stores that are super gentle.

Laurel....I cut my own hair too! My salon knows it too If my hair just needs a quick trim I do it, but I make sure to go along the line of the original cut. This new cut I got about a month ago is working out nice. I haven't felt the urge to trim it.

I used to go get foiled but my bf started doing my hair at home about 6 months ago.I get more compliments now but I liked it better before, personally.Having him do it saves alot of time & money.I was really worried about it at first but he promised to pay to have it fixed if I didn't like it at all.

I do my own (usually dark auburn) with Clairol Natural Instincts (lasts thru 24 shampoos). If I don't like it, I can wash the krap out of it and make it go away, lol. Teresa, try a temporary color if you are intrigued. I will not do the permanent because I don't want to have to keep up with the roots.

I color my hair at home...............Right now I use Garnier Nutrisse in Champagne Fizz, its Champagne Blonde, and I will sometimes use Revlon Colorsilk In Golden Blonde. It is only around $3.00 a box at Walmart so I will buy a few boxes when I see it ..........It's a popular color around here so they don't always have it in stock...........For the price, it colors good for me. But I do like the Garnier better. I use Biolage shampoo and conditioner so my hair stays pretty healthy and the coloring does not dry it out........plus I just got 6 inches cut off so my hair is in pretty good shape!!!!

I color my hair at home, also. I have been doing so for the last 12 years. My natural haircolor is brown and when I first started coloring my hair I was using L'Oreal Performing Preference (which is now Superior Preference) in Medium Ash Blonde. When L'Oreal came out with the Open, I started using that and colored it with Medium Blonde (got rid of the ash) then went to blonde, then light blonde. My hair didn't get really blonde until i started using the Feria Extra Light Blonde, and whoaaa it got sooo blonde without bleaching i couldn't believe it.

Last July 30th, i colored it red with L'Oreal Open Light Copper Brown. Everyone loved it and so did I. I left work a blonde and the next morning i come in and I am a red head!!!!I used that for a few months then switched back to Superior Preference in Intense Red Copper.

Then a few months ago, my girlfried tried the Garnier Nutrisse in Medium Reddish Brown. She raved about how great it made her hair feel and the color was perfect for her. I tried the #66 True Red. I wanted to get away from the copper color and have a red that was deeper. That was the best move I ever made. When I first color my hair, it is very dark, kinda like a purple/eggplant color. It looks awesome. I have gotten sooooo many compliments on the color it is unreal and people think that I have it professionally done. When I tell them I do it myself, they cannot believe it is a box color.

I used to do mine at home, but it is too messy and I am lazy, so I get it done at the salon. I found a girl that only charges $35 for all over color, can't beat that with a stick!

I used to get professional hi-lights done...long, long ago!! I've been doing my own color for about 10 years. I use L'Oreal Preference Natural Blonde. Been wanting to try Garnier, but I'll stand there in the store for 30 minutes trying to choose a color...then finally just pick up the L'Oreal!!

You guys who cut your own hair are BRAVE. The only thing I'll cut is my bangs!

I get my highlights foiled in professionally at the salon. It costs $70, lasts for months, and looks great. I would never attempt to highlight or color my hair.... I'd probably screw it up royally.

I color my own hair, have for years. I love Herbal essence color. It has a nice smell and leaves my hair feeling well comditioned. I started using their light golden brown and I adore it!!!

This is so bad, but I just use whatever either intriques me, or is on sale. The only one I just won't do is Herbal Essences. The smell of the shampoo makes me sick, I can't imagine letting it sit on my head for 20 minutes! LOL I'm surprised that some of you have had bad luck with the Colorsilk, that one, while not the most moisturizing, gives me really good color. Can't beat the price either. Right now, I've got a box of that new L'oreal stuff, with the color and highlighting in one box, sitting upstairs. I just haven't found the time to do it yet, but I will soon.

Just ftr, I color my hair blonde. It WAS blonde when I was a child and a teen, but when I got pregnant, it started turning darker. Just out of nowhere, hadn't dyed my hair at all, and suddenly, I had dark roots. Something about the hormones I guess. Happened to my mom too. Weird, huh? So I tried dying it all to the medium brown color of my roots, but I just didn't look like ME with brown hair. LOL.

I have tried just about every home color kit you can buy, and Loreal make the best ones bar none!! the conditioner is the thickest and their gloves are the highest quality & they will not rip on you. my hair actually feels better after I color it than before! I hate hate hate anything clairol & I'm super allergic to the herbal essences.

Chica, try the new L'Oreal Color Experte hair color. It's totally fool proof. You first do an all over color, then highlights with a mascara type brush. I did my own and nobody could tell I did it on my own.

thanks for the tip.... I'll try it if I wind up short on cash at the end of the summer... (which invariably happens. tee hee) I just got my hair cut SHORT and my color looks better than ever... not sure why though.

if you're scared, try a henna dye. my mom just started using it because she was alergic and scared of all the chemicals in real die and her hair has never looked better. it's also super good for your hair and I think it's only semi-perm.

Strnghrt, the L'Oreal Color Experte is really good stuff. The package also gives you tips on how to put in the highlights for the type of cut you have. Not all styles are listed of course, but some more popular ways to highlight.
The all over color compliments the highlights, so it really looks nice. My husband loved it when I had done my hair with this.

My mothers owns a salon and i do hair also, so i get it for free. Im naturally dark ash blonde (its ugly) so i have it lightened to a light golden blonde all over, with platinum higlights which are foiled. I absolutely hate cap highlights! It's alot of work....i cant stand having any roots so i get the all over colour touched up every 2 weeks and highlights every 6.

With all this hair color talk I went out today and got a box of Nice and Easy. My grey was really starting to pop out, especially when I have my hair pulled in a barrette. I love my new color It's supposed a "dark caramel brown". It is kind of dark right now. I even got told today I look like Kelly Osbourne! NOT!

I go to a salon for everything!! One time I had my best friend cut my hair, and I thought it looked pretty good, well, until I straightened anyway. That has scared me from ever trying to cut it myself. A few months back I dyed my hair a ruby red color that looked great, but since then I have gotten highlights at my salon. I'm getting my hair done next month for cheerleading pictures and for back-to-school. I'm only going to get red and brown because I'm so tired of having blonde highlights. They grow out way too fast.

I view a trip to the salon much like I do my tanning...A luxury. While I am sure I could color my own hair and do my own nails if I took the time to do the research and learn how, I enjoy being pampered and have someone else do it for me and I enjoy the atmosphere at my salon. So I guess I am the opposite of a lot of you. I tan at home and go to the salon for my hair!

Tuesday will be a beauty day for me...pedicure, highlights and a massage. I won't be worth squat the rest of the day

I go to the salon to get my hair done. I used to do it myself, but my hair is so porous it is hard to get it to turn out right. I ended up going from having my hair down my back to cut REALLY short, like a pixie haircut. I didnt mind it, but now its getting longer again. It had just gotten tooooooo dry from me doing it at home. So, now I make sure I get it done at the salon.

When my naturally auburn hair started turning blonde on the sides, I knew from my mother's experience that I was turning gray and really panicked. I began coloring my hair at home the same week. I use L'Oreal's Excellence. I get good, true-color results.

I used to have my mom do my hair at home for me. I have dark brown hair and I wanted blonde hair so we used a very light blonde shade from Hydrience. That didnt turn my hair the blonde I wanted obviously. It was more like an orangy blonde. My friend is a hair dresser at an Aveda salon and she now does my hair at her house. Its way cheaper for me then going to her salon like I used too. She does my roots with blonde color and then gives me tons of blonde highlights so it gives my hair the platinum blonde look. I love it this way and have had it like this for 2 years now. My hair is in really nice condition too considering how blonde it is. But I use good shampoos etc... I go about every 4 weeks for touch ups on my roots. Anymore then that and it starts to bug me. Its alot of up keep and maintenence to keep it this color buts its worth it.

I get my hair colored at a friend's house as well. She works at this upscale Aveda salon and there's no way I'd pay to have my color done there. She told me that to color and cut my hair at the salon it would cost me $170.00. Forget that!

I do mine at home and have for more years than I care to admit. Due to heredity.. I began graying at 18 so I feel like I have to color since I am not nearly as 'old' as my hair thinks I am!
My hair is naturally black (Indian) and I go to a nice dark strawberry blonde. I use Garnier Nutriesse permanent color in a shade of blonde called "champaign fizz". It gives me the perfect color. Looks very natural and the coloring itself isn't nearly as strong smelling as other brands I have tried. Its also quite gentle on the hair itself. I have used some that make my hair feel like a straw broom. And I have tried them all! I've been black (natural), brown, red, and blondie blonde.. which was my worst choice and looked the most fake by far. I also had the blonde done at the salon.. which is one reason why I began doing it on my own.

i go to the beauty school by my house. they ALWAYS do an awsome job its not like they have girls whove been in the school for 3 days doing it. the girls have atleast 1000 hours in before they touch a clients hair, instructers supervise them, and if you dont like it the teachers redo it for you and the whole thing is free. ive never had a problem and its SO much cheaper than a regular salon. i used to do my own hair, but if you concider the halfway decent dye costs between 8 and 14, throw in the hassle of doing it,and the antiipation of not always knowing what color will come out, it makes 25 for a dye job and 30 for highlites seem so much nicer.

I've gone to the beauty school in my city before, but never for color. I be too worried with the way my hair grabs color. I have gotten pedicures, manicures, and haircuts there. It's really cheap and with an instructor always nearby they are extra careful.

From someone who's been to a salon and who's done it at home I highly reccomend going to a salon. I get my highlights redone on average every 2 months with a trim, I should get it done sooner as my hair grows fast but that's what it works out to.
