May seems to be the month that has the biggest and baddest tornadoes but even this month, there have been more tornadoes and severe thunderstorm reports than ever. One reason I can think of is that the Bermuda high has built up and is keeping the weather pattern "bottled" up, preventing the lows from moving quickly and out of the US. So the upper lows hang around, get stronger, and cause all sorts of mischief like tornadoes and severe thunderstorms with destructive winds and heavy rain / floods.
Thanks to global warming, clouds build up higher into the atmosphere and the higher they go, the heavier the rain gets and the more severe the storms can get. Not to sound grim or anything but this may be a sign of things to come. They are already predicting a very active hurricane season so East Coast dwellers, beware .
