Hey everyone,

Just wanted to say this seems like a really cool site and I'm glad I found it. I just have a couple newbie questions, and I'd very much appreciate it if I can get some feedback.

1 - I'm a new tanner. I have pretty fair skin, because I'm part Irish. However, I'm more Italian, and once I burn once, I get rather dark. But the first burn is pretty ruthless. In the winter I get white as a ghost.. my legs look like milk lol. I was wondering how I can go about creating a base tan? What's the best recommendation?

2 - I was out on the beach for about 3 hours yesterday, but I wasnt wearing a bathing suit, just shorts and a tee shirt, so I have really obnoxious tan lines. My forearms will be dark, but from the elbow up is like albino. What should I do to even it all out??

3 - I just went to a tanning salon about 35 minutes ago, and I was in one of their beds called a Viper (?) or something like it. I was in there for approximately 8 minutes, and I don't see any results. My top arms are still pale as all ****. I don't understand it. The thing even recommended that beginners do 2 minutes, but I was in for 8. How long does it take to see results? Since I told the lady I burn easily, she recommended that bed, she said it has a 50% less burn rate than the others there, so I went for it.

I'm just worried that I'll still be pale all over except from the knee down and from the elbow down. I'm pretty frustrated to say the least

Any one have any thoughts or ideas? Thanks!

-Dena

ok 1 it takes time to get a tan. going into a bed once is not a magic solution. 2 it takes 24hrs to see full results from tanning. 3 NEVER EVER let yourself burn, burning is the worst thing you can do to your skin. 4 did you use any kind of lotion? using lotion will get you color 70% faster since your skin will be moist, moist skin tans better than dry skin. Dry skin will reflect more of the UV light and you won't see color as fast. do you moisturize? preferably using a moisturizer without mineral oil. my suggestion is to get everything looking more even why not use a dha bronzer on those parts that have no color that should make everything LOOK even until you are actually getting some color from the tanning bed. and if you tan outside always wear spf.

Take it slowly. YOU SHOULD NEVER EVER BURN. I recommend that if your 8 minute session did not leave you burned or slightly pink.. You stay at the 8 minutes until you reach your potential there. (i.e. Tan every other day for 8 mintues, 1st day did you see color: if yes, then your next session should be 8 minutes if you see color then next one 8 as well until you no longer see color .. then go up to 9 or 10 minutes...)

Take it slowly... It could take anywhere from immediately to 72 hours for your tan to stop producing... You want to be sure that you are not tanning outdoors and indoors on the same day...

Very good advice here, Dena. You are not going to see a tan 35 minutes after your session. Take it very slowly, never burn. Be patient...

I know I'm new to this site too...seems really cool! Everyone seems to have alot of great advice and comments
I have been tanning for over a year now...funny to say I feel weird if my colors starts to lighten. I started in a stand up, had great color results at first...until I started getting alittle orangey looking. I have learned in the last year to alternate from a stand up, back to a lay down bed. As for me, they tan me differntly. The stand up is great for my upper body as for the lay down is great for my legs and most all parts of my body, excluding my sides I found differnt ways to lay though:)
Have A Great Night Everyone

In the mean time, you could use a self-tanner to even your color out. As long as you don't apply to much, you will most likely not turn orange. I use Banana Boat soft meadium blend creme and it works fairly well for a Wal-Mart lotion.
