I know a lot of you have tried different diets (Atkins, etc>). What do you think? Do they work short term/long term? What's the best way you've found to lose weight and keep it off?

Atkins has worked for me. I started following the Atkins diet religiously and lost 24 lbs. over a year ago. I just watch my carbohydrate intake now and have kept it off. I don't think of it as a diet anymore. I don't restrict myself too much. If I want to have a piece of cake I will eat one, but then I just make sure I don't have too many carbs for the rest of the day. My biggest problem was switching to diet pop, I hated diet, now I can't stand regular pop. It's a hard diet to start but it gets easier to follow as you go.

I have to agree with the water...I feel slimmer if I drink lots of water and feel bloated if I don't. That doesn't make much sense does it? lol

I absolutely agree - You have EXCERCISE and just use common sense, You have to change your eating habits - I watch the fat and calories and drink LOTS of water. I just lost over 30 pounds since March. I did really do a LOW calorie LOW fat diet and I do the Pilates work-out every day. but now I'm just trying to maintain and not go back to all the bad eating habits and just continue to work-out. If its something you really want to do for yourself you just have to learn self-dicipline.

Ladyboss, did you use windsor Pilates? I've been thinking about getting the tapes, but I wasn't sure..

I used Atkins and it has been the only diet that has worked, and not left me hungry and waiting on my next meal! I have kept the weight off for about 6 months (another rarity!).

Good job Boo! I am never hungry either & I don't feel like I'm restricting myself. You can eat anything in MODERATION.

Another Atkins convert here!!!! I've been doing it since the beginning of April and I've lost over 20 lbs...and I found I don't have cravings...and I am a big-time sugar addict! I know this diet isn't for everyone, you have to find what works for you...and this one works for me.

Yes, its the Windsor Pilates Tape - The work-out is good but she's a little boring! Now that I know the excercises I do a lot of fast forwarding through all her talking.!!!

I am on a sugar busters diet and it helps alot. I would be on it for about 8 weeks and you will see a huge difference.

Nitro, I'm thinking about adding carbs back to my diet (I have added enough to keep me at maintenance) that would give me a sugar-busters lifestyle.

I'm def. going to get the windor as soon as I get some money! It sounds great, besides her being boring.

I love love love my Windsor Pilates tapes. I lost 10 lbs in 2 weeks without even trying so I had to stop doing them everyday.

I'm another Atkin's do'er. I've never seen anything that works so well. I always feel full, and have tons more energy! No cravings for sweets, just pizza. I've lost about 35 pounds so far, so pizza will just have to wait.

I lost 50 pounds in 4 months on the Atkins diet. I followed it very strictly. It's been about 2 months since I've quit the Atkins.I now drink diet drinks or water and eat only when I'm really hungry.I use to could eat a sandwich while cooking dinner, nibble on dinner while cooking it, eat with the family and later on that night eat the left overs. Dang, I was a COW! Now that it's been about a half a year later my stomach could never hold that amount of food. One sandwich and some chips will fill me up.I weigh myself every morning and I am very active outside. I got depressed and lazy. Not no more!!

The mayo clinic diet is nice cause you are on for 12 days and off for 2. I have had results with this, as long as I am not crazy on the 2 days off.

I stopped snacking, drank Diet Pepsi instead of RootBeer (which was probably the hardest step), and got into long distance running. I usually run 7 miles every other day. Right now, I'm not, because we're having a lot of fires, and it kills my throat and lungs to run in the smoke.

I just drink lots of water, and gave up fried foods and soda, and I'm doing pretty good, but I don't excersise like I should, so I'm sure I could do better

Same here I gave up coffee, soda and juice. All I drink is water alll the time. And no more fast food or junk food. Ive been taking Xenadrine EFX pills they have seemed to help as well with the energy so I could work out more and cutting my appetite. Ive lost like 40lbs since summer started and happily back to a good size of 130lbs.

I usually do the protein shake fasts, for about 5 days, nothing but Myoplex protein shakes about 5-8 of them throughout the day, they're the bomb, they're low in calories and also fats, Have about 35 grams of protein in them,... I couldn't stick to the Atkins, I live for my carbs, so the shakes really kick but, I see results really quick, I usually blend all my shakes with ice, to give them more of a consistancy. Keeps me fuller longer, I would recoomend, staying away from the soda as much as possible, I haven't had a soda in 16 months.... drink just water and from time to time ice tea,..
I still have about 20 pounds I'd like to loose..

I drink diet coke (always did) even when not dieting, water is the key though! I will never give up coffee but those are the only things I drink so there is no fat or calories in my liquids. As for food......just say NO!.... watch the carbs and fats and stay active the pounds will melt off!

I really like The Zone diet. It works very well for me and once you get the hang of it, it is super easy to follow...plus you don't even feel like you're dieting

I've been doing a combination of the zone diet and counting calories. I track everything I eat on fitday and try to stay under 1600 calories a day. I also try to eat low glycimic foods.

Exercise is important also. I try to work out everyday. I've been going to curves Mon, wed & fri and doing my walk off the pounds dvd on the other days.

I don't follow a specific diet.....I just believe that eating healthy is a way of life, there is no diet (for me at least!) that will work forever. I eat only whole wheats, fresh veggies (if I HAVE to do canned I will) that sort of stuff--no sodas except for the occasional diet pepsi or sierra mist free. I haven't been doing as much cardio as I usually do--three times a week compared to my normal 5/6, but I weight train--something that is VERY important in burning fat.

I just follow the basic calories in, calories out---that is what fat is essentially made up of. I keep myself around 1800-2000 a day when I am staying in shape--my body needs around 2200 to maintain supposedly, but I tend to stay a bit under this.

I do try to get my bigger meals in earlier in the day though---that way I stay more energized.

Oh and water, vitamins, and supplements!!!!!

Right now I am working with a nutritionist, which is going to help me put on some more lean muscle mass. I love my new diet, I only started Sunday and I feel really energized. I eat 6 meals a day every 3 hours. I feel so much healthier and it is good to know I am eating the right amounts of foods for my body and my activity levels. Before I don't think I was eating enough for the amount of calories I was burning throughout the day. We'll see at the end of the week if it is working, I go for measurements on Sunday.

i have practically eliminated diet coke from my diet because that does not help weight loss as you know. WATER is all anybody needs. but of course i cannot give up my coffee or green tea <<guilty but for me counting calories is the only way to lose weight and keep it off along with walking.

Tiana

I've found that the only thing that works for me is counting calories. I do Weight Watchers, which is basically a slightly complicated form of calorie counting, taking fiber and fat grams into account. You also earn points when you work out, allowing you to eat more without going over your daily point limit. Works for me.

Honestly, I just found the South Beach diet too restrictive where I live. Lots of things-I'm not the most creative menu planner, and even with their recipes I still had problems making full meals. It's all "fresh" foods really, which is great! but sucks when you work shifts and get stuck with no food and zilch for prep time.

It's hard. I don't like to think of SB as a "diet" more of a lifestyle change, because most people gain the weight back as soon as they go off the diet.

Caloric restriction seems to me the best way to lose weight-if you burn off more than you take in you'll lose poundage-it's physics, right??

Others talk about the "french" diet. Eat what you want, just only 3 bites of it. That's hard for me, simply because you're taught to clean your plate AND I can turn any sized food into "three bites' if it tastes good.

I've never followed a certain dieting plan, but lately I've been watching and counting my calories. I've found that watching my calories has helped me lose inches off my body, in conjunction with maintaining a physically active lifestyle. I've been hitting the gym about 5 - 9 times a week, or I go running/jogging outside on my days off of the gym weather permitting.

I have found that limiting myself to certain 'unhealthy' foods and high calorie foods and keeping active has helped me stay in shape.

Hmmm...the divorce diet worked best for me. I got rid of the husband and the pounds just melted off. :D

Seriously, I think it was the fact that I stopped eating out every night when we split up that really did it, but people do tend to lose weight when they get divorced.

i know, same here! when i feel in control of what i eat and how much i exercise, i go for it 100%. but otherwise i give in and just can't stop at one. seriously, i just want more and more. it's like my diet's alter-ego.
