What kinds of exercises do you love or hate? As somebody who works in fitness and training, I like to know what people find really works for them and what they find is a waste of time!

I hate running. If you see me running, it's because something is chasing me. I also hate arobics(sp). I had a semester of it in college, and learned how to fake a lot of the moves by being in the very back.
I love playing sports, walking, and jogging if I have to get somewhere quicker than walking can take me.

I hate aerobics too sunbunny! I like weight traning, but some machines I detest. (e.g torso rotation) I like yoga, thinking about trying pilates. I hate to swim laps (I always run into the ropes!) but love to float around! Also like the elliptical trainer, HATE stair climbers. And hate treadmills (boring).
I also like golf, but many ppl do not consider this exercise!

I don't like anything about exercize. LOL I used to be in cheerleading and was really motivated to exercize, but not lately. I would really like to join a gym with my husband when we get new jobs that allow time for it.
I do like swimming though. I could swim all day, everyday.

I'm pretty much a workout nut, but I do hate treadmills; I'll do almost any cardio exercise except that! For those of you who "hate" exercise", there's always something for everyone! You'll feel so much better getting even a little active, and (best part!), you'll think your tan looks better!

I hate running, stairmasters, and things where I have to stay still for too long.
I don't mind running as long as I'm playing a sport (tennis, soccer, basketball, etc.) I also like doing leg presses and other leg excercises.
Treadmills are okay with me, but only if there's nothing better to do.

I know you're right bonnie...I just seem to have a problem starting...and then when I do start, I have a problem sticking with it...and then I hate myself because of it...a vicious circle, I know...but I have been sticking with my diet for 3 months now!...now that I've lost weight and got a nice tan I know that exercise is the next important step to my complete physical transformation...I have free weights and a bench in my apt...and a treadmill as well...now I just have to stop making excuses and just do it...what I really need is someone like you to come over 3 times a week and whip me into shape!

I like the eliptical trainers. They really tone your legs quickly. Works the thighs and buns like a charm & get's your heart rate up perfectly. Can't say that I have any real complaints except the resistants is a little harder then a standard tredmill, and it takes a bit to get used to the movement.

I love to run, but cannot due to a bad knee injury when I was fourteen (doing the long jump in track ). So I like to walk with weights, eliptical trainers (Colorgod, they're wonderful.. they have absolutely everything to recommend them!), swim, and weight training in general.

The eliptical machine is awesome!!! Once you try that you'll never want to go back to the treadmill... I'm tellin ya! Not only is it really effective if you stick with it, but it also seems like it's not as boring as just walking or running on a treadmill... you should definetely try it!

Ok, somebody recommend a cardio routine for a klutz! I know I need to do it, I need to lose weight for my health, but I am soooooooooo uncooridinated! I like working out at home, I don't have time or money to go to a gym. I have all sorts of fitness tapes, from Richard Simmons to The Firm. I LOVE The Firm, I love the weights aspect, but the step routines really trip me up, so I get frustrated, and give up. I have a Pilates tape, that I enjoy, but I know I need some cardio too. eek! (oh, yeah, walking is out, til I find a track to walk on or something, my neighborhood is nothing but really steep hills, plus it's too freaking hot!)

Sunbunny What you had are called shin splints, they happen because the leg muscles are stretching because they were not stretched before exercise. Lots of runners try to work through them and they go away. But they are very painful I agree.

I swim, handcycle, kayak, wheel around a lot! LOL I do floor point yoga and upper body pilates. I have to obviously choose exercise that is upper body or that can be adapted...but I try almost anything once. One of my girl buds gives body pump classes at Gold's Gym, and she wants me to go there but I just think it would feel odd for me now...my gym has lots of things I can do, like the free weights, lots of the machines, and of course, the pool...but when I think of Gold's, I just think of bodybuilding, and my muscles are big enough! LOL I want to actually get my biceps longer and leaner, less bulky...they are big because I use my arms so much...the only leg workout I get is in the pool...because my injury in called "incomplete" (meaning I damaged, but did not sever my spinal cord, I still have feeling and can move my legs a little in the pool where there is no resistance.
I'm so thankful for fitness intergration, as I would not want to become like I see so many other people with spinal cord injuries...unhealthy and out of shape. My spinal cord injury doc that I visit once a year for a check-up says my muscle mass in my legs is that of someone in a chair for a year or two, not the 16+ I've been in mine...so I am doing something right. He says I'm the healthiest crip he knows.

Nice topic Bonnie...I don't have time to read the entire thread right now but I'll give you my take
My favorate exercises in the gym are deadlifts, most chest exercises, skull crushers, and reverse EZ bar curls.
I dread squats until I'm in the middle of doing them. Once I do my first set for some reason I start loving them and getting very intense with them.
I don't mind doing cardio but I hate running on treadmills. I do most of my cardio on the eliptical trainer which I like a lot.
Oh yeah, and I hate doing crunches. Other ab exercises I don't mind, but crunches just don't excite me.

I hate treadmills, steppers, situps - and "traditional swedish gymnastics"
I like working-out in the open - bicycle riding, running, speedwalking, long-distance-swimming in lakes or the sea, canoeing. I also like working out with weights, yoga, judo.

I have found a new love... ELLIPTICALS!! I got an early Xmas presents this last weekend and I just love it! 30 mins a day 4 - 5X's a week and I feel great! Now I hate losing interest or time to do it even for 1 day, then I start to find other things to do instead of workout, so I'm hoping that doesn't happen with my elliptical

Walking. I get absolutely no results with walking. I guess my body is just so used to me doing exercises like Tae-Bo and when I go back to doing easy stuff it doesn't phase my body at all.
I also don't care for lunges, but they work my legs the best, so I still do them even though I dont like them.
The exercises I do like are whats included in the Tae-Bo series, and I also like light weights (1-2 lbs) and stepping.

I love Tae-bo - all of the dvds, especially cardio - and my elliptical once I get past the first 5 minutes. Does anyone else notice that those first 5 min are the hardest? I also love any type of ab workout.
I hate hate hate the stationary bike. I feel like I'm getting nowhere. I also dislike squats. I have a very high instep and my foot won't allow me to squat properly without falling back on my butt.

Ok, I hate ab workouts. I love my treadmill, I walk/jog 3-4 miles a day on it. I also do weight training, which I love. I don't like the excercises themself but I love the burn from the weights, the satisfaction after I've acomplished my workout and the results I get from them. Oh and I hate lunges and squats also LOL.

I don't like working my legs but I do it anyway. I like cardio better now than i did 6 months ago. My favorite things to work are my arms and my abs. I don't like aerobics where you have all that choreography. Running is so not for me. I would walk if I had a treadmill but I have to go to the gym for that so I son't ever walk, I don't like doing it outside for some reason.
I think that's all I don't like.
Pokey
11-23-2004, 05:20 PM
treadmills are the worst! I prefer recumbent bikes, then eliptical, then stair climbers. Treadmills are dead last on my list mostly because the ones at my gym hurt my ankles
Pokey
11-23-2004, 05:28 PM
Now for the excercise routine:
20 Mins Cardio - trying to get the HR to 140ish
10-15 mins stretching - I have an entire stretching routine from head to toe and (almost) everything in between.
20 mins resistance/weight training.
I work out 5 days a week. I DO NOT ever skip on stretching. I might cut down on cardio or weights, but never on stretching.
Weight training really varies. I try to work what i think are complimentary muscle groups - triceps & chest one day biceps/back the next, abs and legs the next and then iether restart with chest/triceps, or hit some area I feel needs more attention. I never do the same muscle groups on consecutive days. Nor do I commit to "Monday is 'X' day" If Monday roles around and I feel like doing legs, then that's what I do...I just don't hit them again for at least 24 hours - excluding cardio of course
I really like variety within guidelines and I've tried to layout those guideline for you. I find that sometimes I really want to work abs sometimes, then get tired/bored and then move to another group. I just got off an "abs" kick and am now really into tricep workouts. My triceps and chest respond really well to weight training. My abs and biceps don't respond at all
mythr
11-23-2004, 07:17 PM
I try to get in 45 minutes of cardio on the elliptical, keeping my heart rate between 160 and 180, each weekday. Then I work weights with my back, chest and triceps every other day, and abs, biceps, and shoulders the rest. Instead of working legs I turn the resistance up on the elliptical.
On Saturdays I usually go out to the clubs, and dance up a storm. I do a lot of breakdancing moves to show off, and that tends to work whatever I missed during the week. Before I started breakdancing, one of my friends once told me that there's the muscles you work out, and then the muscles you breakdance with, and I totally agree. It definitely gets all the ones you neglect.
When I want to take a break from the routine, I sometimes break out Dance Dance Revolution, or go swimming. I used to do a lot of martial arts, but I've been into Aikido lately, which is too passive to be good as a workout. Kickboxing is loads of fun, though.

I can`t run on the treadmill `cause I get sheen splints (sp?) I LOVE working on my chest and ABS. The pain you feel the day after you work out your chest kinda feels good in a masochist way... lol! My abs, there aare sooo many different ways of working the out that you can usually and drastically change your routine and make it fun! I hate working out my shoulders because they tend to get too big too fast.
Cardio, I can only do it on the machines if I am listening to good music, like hip-hop or salsa.
My routine is usually 1 hour taekwondo (VERY intense) and 30 mns weight lifting.
I LOVE WORKING OUT!!!!
