Hey folks - I've been doing a lot of reading and I'm coming across the phrase "high pressure" quite often. What does this mean?
I used the HT-54 at Hollywood Tans, how does this company to a high pressure?
Thanks!

C'mon - you're telling me that none of you experts can answer this one for me? Have the smell of the lotions been whisking you away?

I think high pressure beds are basically uva light and the bulbs filter out the uvb light. High pressure beds allow the uva light to penetrate into your skin deeper. I've also heard that uva tanning allows your skin to exfoliate every 28-30 days like it is supposed to naturally. UVB light is the burning rays so it speeds up your exfoliation to 8-10 days because of the burning and peeling. I think I remember reading on here a thread that explained exactly what high pressure beds are maybe if you did a search you'd be able to find it to get more info. Hope that helped a little.

High pressure beds will also continue to tan you for 24-48 hours after you tan compared to a regular bed which only tans you for about 8-10.

Here is some info I found for you..hope it helps explain it a little bit
1. What is high pressure tanning?
Developed in Europe 30 years ago for use in phototherapy treatment, high pressure lamps produce UV/A and UV/B in different ratios than conventional tanning beds: just enough UV/3 to produce the melanin required to tan, and a lot of UV/A to oxidize that melanin and turn it a golden brown.
And another :
What is the difference between high pressure and low pressure tanning beds?
High pressure beds are typically priced higher and allow for longer tanning sessions. The beds are equipped with "cartridges" that allow for maximum UVA and very minimal UVB. However, the penetration of UVA is much further than low pressure UVA light due to the high wattage of the bulbs. High pressure beds, otherwise known as UVA Tanning, seems to last a bit longer because the rays are penetrating deeper and therefore tanning below the surface level of the epidermis, sometimes affecting the collagen layer(the muscle of your skin).
2. What's better? High-pressure tanning? Or low- and medium-pressure tanning? Studies show that a combination of low-or medium-pressure tanning and high-pressure tanning produce the best and fastest results. High-pressure lamps are the fastest: a base tan can be established in as few as one to three visits compared to 10 or more visits to a low-pressure bed.

My salon has one and I have only used it once. I loved the results I got from it, but I hated using 5 of my 20 visits towards one use of it

I was told that one visit on a high pressure bed is the equivalent of 5 medium pressure sessions. Wouldn't suprise me because I get awesome color from them. Who knows?

Boo,
that's true, due to the fact that a HP bed blasts you with intense UVA, about 20Kw to 22Kw worth. Most beds of the low to "medium" pressure are much lower in wattage, around 3200 to 6000 (excluding HP facials) watts. And the high insensity UVA penetrates deeper into your skin, allowing you to tan deeper. So yeah, practically anyone who gets a good tan with a LP bed will get a great tan from a HP bed.
I know I do
However, I crack up a bit when I hear one say that you can get the tan of 10 visits in a LP 100 watt 24 to 32 bulb bed. Maybe 5 or so but not 10. That's a bit of a stretch, IMHO.

ask the employees at the salon if they have high pressure tanning or call around to find which salons have them.
