I go outside for walks, but I do not lay out after having visited/or planning on visiting the salon that day.

I haven't heard this before but maybe someone else on here has. I know that if it is sunny out I watch any excess exposure I might get after tanning so I don't get burnt.

Go outside.. Just wear your SPF... What you want to avoid is tanning outdoors after having a tanning session .. or tanning indoors after laying out all day... The average for an indoor tan to develop fully is 24 hours... So if you tan indoors and outdoors you may think your fine and really be burnt badly the next day....
