This is a post from a good friend that owns a salon in Central Florida...
She is full of knowledge on SKIN CARE INFORMATION...

"Many companies have come out this season with what they refer to as “microdermabrasion in a jar”..
They claim.” The Doctor is OUT”… the same aluminum oxide crystals used in the in office procedures for microderm are now found in a rubbing compound for the skin every day people can use at home..

Unlike the real procedure that is done in a clinical treatment where as a machine is used and pressurized air blasts the crystals onto the surface of the skin…..the in home crystals are massaged on to the surface of the skin with the fingers… ( this is performing quite a lot of action on the surface).. people think the skin feels so soft after use...but using this too often creates problems for the skin....

When the crystals are used by a professional with a machine the treatment stimulates collagen production along with the exfoliation…

This in home treatment should only be used once every 7-10 days…but people are doing it often at home in their shower… way too often....

This much action on the face, throat and delicate chest tissue can make the skin very very sensitive to tanning.... and break down valuable oils in the skin....

We had a guest who is an avid tanner, level 3A skin type..she came out of her session ( 15 minutes in the Ultra-Sun 4000) and her face was very very pink…and she said it stung…

We applied a aloe toning mist to the skin and examined the areas that were inflamed with the dermascope… revealing tiny scratches on the surface of her skin we asked "what in the world did you use on your skin"???? “Dermapolish” she said… an over the counter compound crystal... available at the food store..or the mall......

This in home treatment is quite aggressive to the skin and should be used in moderation..(every 7-10 days)

Remember…ask your guests on a regular basis if anything has changed with their skin care regiment….even products with AHA or Beta acids can make the skin sensitive to tanning,

Know whats out there….so you can advise your guests to look good and feel good…… these types of products don't mix with tanning......"

Would this also be the same as the microdermabrasion kits that come with the little machine?

If I need to exfoliate, I just get out my facial scrub... Does the trick just fine.

I've been using the microdermabrasion kit for about a month and it just feels so good - the machine has 3 different attachments for cleansing exfoliating and massaging - I'm just wondering if maybe this isn't as good for your face as it seems......so far no problems, maybe I'll just do it once a week. If anyone has any info. on this let me know Thanks

DO NOT USE THE HOME KITS!!! PLEASE DO NOT PUT YOUR SKIN THROUGH THAT. THEY WERE DEVELOPED IN THE BEGINNING FOR LICENSED DERMATOLOGISTS ONLY FOR A REASON. THE LONG TERM EFFECTS OF THE HOME KITS ARE VERY NEGATIVE. Please save your skin and pay for a professional to do it.

the key is to be very gentle with the face because it is so delicate...

Good info. I had never heard of those home kits before I read that. I don't think I'd ever "play dermatologist" and use a home kit on my face.

I get microdermabrasion done by a licensed professional every 4-6 weeks. She does not recommend using the at-home microderm kits. She says they are not the same at all and a waste of money.

First of all, the ingredients in the jar are not as delicate nor are they as minute as the professional microdermabrasion crystals. The professional crystals are very "fine", the ones in the jar are not. Using the jar crystals is like using a very rough grain sandpaper on your face.

If you do choose to use the at home kit, I suggest you check the texture and quality of the crystal. You don't want to do more damage to your skin by using something too abrasive.

Instead, try using a facial brush, which has extremely soft bristles, to gently exfoliate the skin. Prior to that, steam so you can open the pores up and use a clay mask to pull out the impurities!

Yup. I'll stick with good old Apricot Scrub.
