Hello Everyone! I just want to know if it's normal to become a bit red after tanning the first couple times? Also is flipping good to try? My bottom is what got red, So I thought if I turn over it might not happen again. Also what kind of lotions are best to use to get dark fast? Thanks in advance for any advice.

If you're getting red, you're prob. getting burned. You need to tan for less times. Usually 3-7 minutes is good for beginers depending on what type of bed you are using. Ask the people who work at your salon, or give us the specifics on your tanning bed and I'm sure someone can reccomend a good tanning time for you.
Flipping is a good thing because it helps provide an even tan, front and back. Read some of the past posts about the frog position and that will explain good ways to lay when you have flipped over.
There are a lot of good browning lotions, Emerald Bay Dark 'n Dazed (cheap price, a lot of beiginers use it), Synergy Brown Envy (great vanilla smell, moisturizing), Designer Skin Drama Queen (nice smell, good results),JA Melaplus (smell not very good but gives good color), and Formulated Solutons Green Tea (moisturing, nice smell). For your face try Designer Skin Saving Face. It's haypoallerginic and wonderful for sensitive/ance-prone faces.
One thing to remember when first starting out, is to tan gradualy. You'll have a better tan in the long run if you start out slow. If you ever burn, don't tan until your redness has gone away.
Also, be sure to moisturize after showering and after tanning. Try Fully Loaded lotion. It smells like raspberry or grape Kool-Aide (depending on who you ask) and is super moisturizing. Moisturized skin tans better than dry skin.

Welcome to the board!

Do you mean red from the heat, or red from being burned?

If it's from being burned, decrease your time next time you tan. And wait for all the redness to go away before you tan again. You shouldn't burn when tanning.

Some of us flip to get our sides and under our arms even.

Use a good, moisturing tanning lotion. Dark n Dazed is inexpensive, as is Brown Envy. Both work well. You might want to look in the love it or shove it forum to get some ideas on what we all like.

Tanning takes time. There is no way to rush it. Just be patient and you'll soon start to see results. You might want to try a sticker, and put it in the same spot every time you tan. That way, you'll see how dark you are getting.

I have been tanning for only two weeks and my back side near my thong gets red if I don't flip. I would say cut a couple minutes back and flip

You shouldn't be getting red unless, like sunbunny said, it is from the heat. It you are burning at all though, you need to wait til the pink goes away and then start back tanning and cut back a few minutes. A lot of people get impatient and up their minutes too quickly and get burned.

What kind of bed are you in? How many minutes are you staying in the bed? Are you using a tanning lotion?

I am using a tanning lotion with aloe and I am already olive skin tone so I have somewhat of a tan already.I was red on my bottom, But the redness has gone away now.I was told a good time was 20 mintues with my complexion color by the staff member at the salon. So I did 20 mintues two days in a row and got a good tan started, But then I was red on my bottom. Thanks for all the input and help.

If I was getting red anywhere, I would drop my time a couple minutes and see if that helps. Even dark skinned people can get burned, especially since you went the full 20 minutes right off the bat. Oh, and yes, flipping is good. I usually do one session on my back, and then the next of my stomach. That seems more relaxing than having to flip in the middle of the session.

20 minutes 2 days in a row is too much.... take a day or two off and then go back for a shorter session... you should never get red or pink from a session. If you are, then the salon is overexposing you....
