I dont know, but if I had to guess, I think my old one wasn't. I posted on about how noone helped me or anything the first time I went, no lotion selection, etc. unless they were just being rude and cheap !

smart tan should provide everyone who takes and passes the smart tan test with certificates and a big plaque...i would think they would put that up in the studio.....with my studio all the girls have a smart tan plaque!
they have smart tan certificates on the wall.

"what does it mean if a salon is not certified? "
Nothing if your salon is clean and run professionaly. When salons pay to have employees certified they employees are taught about over exposure, cleanliness, benefits of tanning etc.
In Ohio it's required all operators now be certified.

Any fool can pass one of those tests. Saying that, if a salon didn't even bother to get certified they probably don't really care about other things either.

We are Smart Tan certified and display our certificates. We are also one of the strictest around concerning eyewear, exposure times, sanitation, etc. We also made it as one of Looking Fit's top 250 salons in 2002. (Ok, I just felt like bragging and I was hurt that we didn't make it this year.)

Congrats Tamar. I wish all salons were as strict and cared as much as what yours does. Some don't care other than to bring money in.

Ours is.i remember when i first started working for the salon ( its now under a new name and has a new owner) but i had to take a class before i was even allowed to sell lotions or put people in beds.I went through suntan supply and but im going to do the smart tan one next year and ours hang up on a wall so everyone can see them.

The salon I use now is SmartTan Certified, but last year the one I used wasn't and you certainly can see the difference - The owner knew nothing about tanning, she was always overexposing people, this poor girl had come in the day after she had been tanning (for her Prom) and she was so burned and her nose was peeling and the prom was that night, I felt so bad for her. They always just put everyone in the bed for 20 minutes regardless of skin type or if they had never been tanning

I should think so, they're one of the most well-renowned and popular tanning salons in the UK.

I don't believe so.Some of the people working know something & some don't.But I am so it doesn't matter. What's funny is a couple of people call me for tanning advice who tan where I do & used to be my customers.I still have people ask me questions occasionally when I go there to tan, too.I guess I worked there for too long.Lol!

My salon is Smart Tan Certified.
I believe you can get a discount on your insurance if you're certified.

It doesnt mean much! My salon is smart tan certified sorta! The owner and his wife is smart tan certified as is their daughter and one employee....nobody else who works there is! I dont place much value in a certified versus a non certified place. I prefer to educate myself on the issue of tanning and dont worry about salon staff knowledge

You are right that it doesn't mean much.We went to the local distributor for an all day class. At the end,the test was open book plus you got to keep going back & correcting it until you passed! What was the point?

The one I go to now is Smart Tan certified. I've gone to both certified and not certified salons. To me it is not a big deal rather they are certified or not. I have seen people who were certified who still knew nothing about tanning (like they just memorized the info long enough to pass the course and didn't bother actually learning it) and I've seen people who were not certified know anything and everything about tanning.

Whoa old thread! But yes my salon is Smart Tan certified. And it is important to me. Not so much as an "established" tanner but if I were a new person coming in and was given bad advice like on like lotions or bed times that could turn out really bad. I could be going 20 minutes in a base bed my first session with a tingle! So I think being certified is definitely important and I think the salon would have a lot more returning customers if they felt people actually knew what they were talking about.
