This might sound like a wierd question. but I was thinking about this as I was tanning today. What is in the cleaner that is used on the beds? Is there a universal cleaner that every salon has to use? No matter where you go, it always smells the same in the beds. I know it has to be gentle enough for the acrylic, but how can it be strong enough to kill germs?

Not a weird question at all, you SHOULD know what your salon uses. There are 3 or 4 different brands available, as far as I know. They must be FDA approved, just like eyewear. And then of course, some are better than others. We tried Australian Gold and then went to Lucasol (the best by far, to me).

Active ingredients are: dimethyl benzyl ammonium chlorides, and dimethyl ethylbenzyl ammonium chlorides. Not sure what those really are...NJChica, can you help us here?

One thing i have wondered regarding the tanning bed cleaning solution is that i have never had a tanning salon tell me where the MSDS sheets can be found, and i have always thought that this was something everyone should be aware of in case of emergencies (not that i think a tanner would ever try to drink the solution, but hey, weirder things have happened) and also the tanning cleaner is often kept in the rooms so the person that uses the bed last can clean up after themselves.... are tanning salons required by law to have the cleaner-bottles marked with the solution they contain? In all the salons i have visited the bottles are always plain, and have no indication of what the contents are.....

Do most salons that have you clean the beds yourself also clean them in addition? I would hope so. In my opinion, you should not have to clean the bed yourself, that's one of the things you pay for. Honestly, how could a salon get away with having their customers clean the beds? I think it's a little unsanitary, you don't know how good people clean the beds when their finished. That's like cleaning up after yourself at the dentist's office. I guess it wouldn't be bad if you clean it yourself before you tan, but I feel that you are paying the salon to do that. Are there regulations about that?

Annie,
Yes in Texas, you are required to label the bottles. I would hope that they are using the proper solutions.
Kristy - I agree, you shouldn't have to clean your bed! The only regulation I know of is that eyewear must be sanitized. Although I disagree with it, in Texas, the beds are not *required* to be cleaned. As a tanner and a salon owner, I think that is gross! I always clean top and bottom - I believe most salons do as well.

Wow, I can't beleive everything else has to be sanitized except for the beds! I guess customers just have to look out for themselves when it comes to sanitary salons. Most places probably clean everything well. I know mine does, everything from the chairs to the floors between each tanner. Thanks for the info!

I'm in Texas also, but regulations are only as good as the agency's budget in charge of enforcing them. My second salon had customers cleaning their own beds and eyewear was in and out of the same little basket on the front counter...ew!ew!ew! Needless to say, we changed all that.

At salon #1 we still have people ask if they should clean their bed, and we say "Heavens no, that's one of the things you pay me for". But the question alone makes me wonder what is going on elsewhere.
