What is the difference between a browning lotion and a bronzer? I thought they were the same... silly me!

a browning lotion is just a lotion with no frills. a bronzer has bronzing agents in them, either dha or some other kind of bronzer.

example cal tan's ambrosia is a browing lotion.... cal tan's pure chocolate is a bronzer

Browning lotions are also reffered to as accelerators, intensifiers, and maximizers.
Bronzing lotions are either sunless tanning lotion (dihydraxetone, dha) bronzers, cosmetic bronzers, or coloring.
Chocolate Silk is Browning and Browning Syrup is a dha bronzing lotion.

Thank you..... I think I understand the difference now. Bronzers are like those fake tan lotions and a browning is like an accelerator of old?

usually acceleraters are more for those building a tan... but yea they are your basic non tingle non bronzer lotion. they get you brown not just looking brown that will wash off in a couple days lol.... and bronzers in most lotions are not all that dark they just deepen your tan a bit not totally cover ya so u cant see your real color too

i like some bronzers. i like the heavier ones though cus if i am paying for a bronzer i want to see a color change. i dont use them very often but i do like to use them once in awhile. and i agree i like a real tan but most bronzers in lotions are barely noticable (at least to me anyway lol)

Angela, do you see a difference in the way a bronzer looks on you with a lighter tan vs a darker tan? I am taking it nice and slow trying to build my base tan. I have used just sunless tanners with DHA in the past without tanning at the same time and they turned me orange. I wondered if using a DHA bronzer once I have a good base tan would tend to not make me look orangish or if that is just the way DHA will always interact with my skin. Thanks!

You should always have some kind of base tan before you start using bronzers. Using a DHA bronzer (one that contains the sunless tanner) on fresh white unexposed skin definitely has the potential to give you an orangish tint. It also depends upon which bronzer you are using. Some have higher amounts of the DHA in them which can look bad without a nice base tan.

Personally, I can't ever remember using a DHA bronzer that turned me orange.

The last one I tried was that California Beauty sunless tanner system which wasn't as orangish as some of the ones I had tried on my fresh and "very" white skin. I had to give up on that because it just didn't look natural to me and decided that I just need to tan and have the real thing. I think I will wait to get a little darker and see about trying a bronzer. What can it hurt? It'll come off eventually if I do wind up looking like a freak!

a lot of people like Designer Skin's Worship. it has a very light DHA bronzer, you may want to give that one a shot.

you are very welcome. You can always PM me if you have any questions... I may not always know the answers but I do know where to go to find them.

I will see if I can find a post that Tara made regarding this. She explains it so well. Not that Chica doesn't but I think Tara is awesome in this department.

oh Mitzi.... now you're going to get me on a rant about cosmetic bronzers and how lame they are.

No No, just wanted someone better than myself to explain them...

bronzers are like putting makeup all over your body. they are gross and 99% of them are really stinky. i don't like putting some artificial coloring on my body.

Bumped this up cause I thought some of the new tanners might be interested.

Well, I guess I'm gross and stinky then because I love them! Surely though, even though you get an immediate "tan" you are still getting REAL tanning from the beds right?

i said that 'i don't like', so it's my opinion. has it once again become a no-no to have an opinion around here? is a dislike of bronzers the next taboo subject that will be added to the list of topics that will get slapped with the big red zero icon? geeeez people. we don't all have to agree with the queen.

which queen? the Tanning Queen? or Queenboi? or Anya the Queen of the Mods?

I love using makeup bronzers, but have never tried using bronzing lotions. After reading everyone's high opinions of them, maybe i need to expand my horizons and just say 'yes' to trying a bronzer lotion!

bronzers are a great way to boost your color. Give them a shot and you'll love how your color looks.

Im sure i'll love them once i try them.... i've just been scared of ending up streaky. I probably need to give myself more credit than i do, though, and just go for it!!!! So many people have had great results using them, i'll probably be a bronzer-lotion-convert after the first try!!!

I've used a lot of different ones, and not ONE has ever streaked on me! Good luck!

I was merely stating my own opinion as well. I like the bronzers, to each his own.

One thing that works great on one person may not work at all on another. Find something you like and recommend it and if it works for someone else that is great

Can you still get a real tan when using a bronzer?

Sure you can. The bronzer does not stop you from getting a tan at all. When building a base tan it helps make you look a little darker while you are working on your tan. I only use them every now and then, but I never had a problem with them streaking on me. Of course I only used the lighter ones that Emerald Bay has.
