Hi! I just registered here. I was told that this was a great place for info on tanning. I just started going yesterday. I have fair skin, but have been using a sunless tanner, so I have a nice color to me. But, I am stopping the sunless tanner though, because it's too much work! So, I went to the salon, and I was told that 10-12 min would be sufficient for me. It ended up that I only burned a tiny bit on my stomach. Doesn't hurt or anything, just a little itchy. The rest of me was fine. My questions are, how often should someone like me go and for how long? (Fair skin with a temporary fake bake) I'm going tonight, and I'm going to cover my stomach and probably go for about 6 or 7 minutes. Good or bad? Also, is a body butter okay to moisturize with after tanning? Should I use something before tanning? And how long does it take before my legs will start to show a nice tan? They are sort of tan now from the fake bake..but not much. Thanks everybody!

Hugs,
Marcie

Marcie, if you burned then that means then you went in the bed for too long of a time. cut your time down how long did u stay in there for cus 10 and 12 mins are a big difference in the tanning world lol. you might want to cut down to 8 mins to start out

Hey Angela! I went for 12 minutes. Thats what the gal there suggested, but I am only going for about 7 minutes this time around...my choice. Should I cover my tummy? Thanks!

Don't cover your stomach because then you will have a streak

Yeah, I would just wait until it's not red anymore and then tan your whole body at a lower time...

Welcome to the board. Did the person who recommended the 10 min know your color wasn't a real tan? Start slowly, and moisturize a lot and use tanning lotions.

if you are still red do NOT tan until you heal. cus you will run the risk of burning again and causing more damage to your skin.

Yes the girl knew that I had a fake tan. I only went 7 min tonight and I did indeed cover my stomach..the rest of me is actually tanning slowly but surely..I think! LOL. I actually use a body butter and it worked great when I used it tonight. I can't be buying those $30-50 dollar lotions they sell...I am purchasing a nice tan accelerator on the internet for cheaper. And then moisturize with my own lotions/butters. Body butters are said to make your tan look really nice. True?

i use the body shop's body butter and when i do my skin always looks wonderful. try neutrogena's body oil it's really great. if you can try not to use anything with mineral oil since it can dry out your skin. u used the body butter to tan with?

I just saw this thread...

Always ask the employee at the salon where you tan, for the exposure times...
it is their job...

Definatly use a tanning lotion designed for indoor tanning. Your skin will thank you! What lotion did you order? If you need some suggestions check out the love it or shove it fourm

VANILLAQUEEN! STOP GOING! keep using sunless tanners...don't tell me they turn you orange, you just aren't applying correctly. www.sunless.com, read application tips then join the Message Boards and clikc Sunless Tanning under topic. by the time ur 40 u will be leathry and diagnosed with stage 3 skin cancer! Keep using sunless....I joined this communtiy to inform every1 HOW BAD tannning beds are...they are OK for a special occasion (4/5 times a year) but CONSISTENLY! NO WAY!!

Vanilla Queen, try these websites as well:

www.tanningtruth.com
www.smarttan.com

I think the Smart Tan website has a skin typing questionnaire also, can help determine the best exposure time for you. And yes, any parts of your body not used to being exposed to UV light should be covered part way through your session time (typically stomach and hiney ).

VQ - when i first started tanning, it was too much for my stomach and breasts... i used a tube top to cover them up halfway through my session. while i did have a faint line for about 2 or 3 weeks, the line disappeared when i was able to tan all of me minus the tube top. a line is much better than a burn (imo)

Yes, you can use your own body butter and lotions, it is NOT necessary for you to use the expensive indoor "tanning" lotions, and don't let anyone at the salon talk you into it. For the exception of "tingle" products (and there is still some question on those) indoor tanning lotions are nothing but moisturizers. You can compare the ingredients panel on any $50 lotion with what you are using and see for yourself that they are basically the same.[ This Message was edited by: PJ on 2003-06-30 09:53 ]

pj i love ya but i do beg to differ i mean yea you don't have to spend 50 dollars on a tanning lotion but at least some sort of lotion besides a moisturizer. granted most tanning lotions do moisturize. but i certainly want something besides that

Hi Anya!

Ok, but would be the difference between a lotion and a moisturizer, in terms of ingredients? My contention is that a lotion is a "tanning" lotion only because it is marketed that way.
