View Full Version : are there any high end lotions with a low end price?

I see people recommending the EB line, the price for these is fairly reasonable here, are there any others with a good quality and affordable price?

I am not a fan of the Emerald Bay or Carribean Gold lines... I prefer to pay more money for a better quality product with ingredients that will take care of my skin.

the Cote D'Azur line always leaves my skin feeling soft and moisturized. Green and Black Tea contain copper and caffiene to repair damaged skin... if you really are looking for a good product with a lower price, try the Swedish Hemp Creme by SB. Excellent moisture and skin care, not to mention golden results!

I think Synergy's has excellent lotions for the price. I consider it a high end due to the results I get and the way my skin feels and it's a very reasonably priced line.

njchica you may 'prefer to pay more' but that's a very insensitive comment to someone who may not have the means you do. you are telling her that unless she goes broke buying something she cannot afford her skin will not be well taken care of. angi had a much more intelligent answer to the question in my opinion. maybe angi should be the moderator.

i myself was leary about some of the emerald bay lotions but i tried them.. i personally think that dark n dazed is better than their definately dark cus my skin feels more moisturized with it.

I personally think it smells bad... but my friends results are great! Just drown yourself in Angel DZ before you come in close contact with another homo sapien!!! hehehe! Had four hours of biology... can you tell? But some people think it smells good. Do the sniff test first!

yea always do a sniff test... i pretty much buy my lotions by how they smell

As a salon owner, I would highly recommend Emerald Bay products for the value and results, but will not carry Carribean Gold. I, as well as my staff, have tested both.

I love Dark N' Dazed....smell, results, everything. I have the means of more expensive lotions, but I am not going to pay more when I get just as good of results with a lower end. As for how well it takes care of my skin...I just make sure I use a good moisturizer ( and alot of it) and make sure I avoid overexposure.

njchica

my comment was that I did not like the EB or CG lines. I'd rather pay $5 or $10 more for Swedish Hemp Creme and get MUCH MUCH better results. I don't think that's insensitive at all. ****, with my job... I'm sure most of you have more $$ than I do!

Nj..... um I'm a stay at home Mom so not by my standards...lol. Hubby is getting royally ticked at my buying tanning lotions and I can explain till I am blue and he still won't get it! He figures what's so wrong with baby oil!

Just because a lotion gives MUCH MUCH better results for one person, does not mean it will for another person.

There's nothing wrong with EB or Synergy. I'm using dark n dazed, and I'm pretty dark. It does moistuize well. Get a good moisturizer without mineral oil in it. I'm a stay at home mom, also. And my hubby tans too. The eb line works out great for us. Once in a while,we'll splurge on something expensive, but it's got to give REALLY great results. We buy samples if we feel like using something different.

I haven't tried many Synergy products but I do like the ones that I've used--Brown Envy and Africa. I don't know where my mind was. I had totally forgotten about Synergy.

Brown Envy is an excellent lotion which smells HEAVENLY at a very reasonable price. Try it... you'll fall in love with it like we did.

I just took a look at this thread...
The original question is 'are there any high end lotions with a low end price?'

I would say the answer is no....

You get what you pay for...
Even though the Emerald Bay line of products have been seen to give nice results for the price point...
The line is not considered 'High End'

you get what you pay for is not always accurate though, ahem. for instance, would you say this board is bad, it's free.......

I think there are some great lotions out there that give just as good of results as the more expensive lotions. I bought Cal Tan's Helix last year, and it was okay, but i get just as good of results from Brown Envy. I don't think you need to pay a lot of money to get a good lotion. You just have to search around for what is right for you.

njchica
05-09-2003, 07:58 AM
you'll fall in love with Brown Envy like "we" did---- all of us! Out of every single review of Brown Envy I've ever read, I think I've only seen one person who's tried it and did not like it. Brown Envy is excellent... I use it as my daily moisturizer more lately than I tan with it... I also use it at the beach. it's a multi-purpose lotion at a very affordable price.

Has any one tried Margarita Madness or Mojo?

njchica
05-09-2003, 11:47 AM
I have. I hated Margarita Madness... WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too much glitter. Mojo is a good tingle but it is very very strong. It isn't appropriate for a person who has never used tingle before.

Greta
05-09-2003, 12:19 PM
at my salon Scout, the owner uses MOJO and she only tans once in a great while, she gets awesome color from it! The tingle doesn't bother her

I think high-end lotions do more than just give good color. They really take care of your skin and that's what is important.

Greta
05-09-2003, 03:08 PM
A lower priced lotion can do the job, you just have to be smart and pick high quality. There are an awful lot of expensive lotions that I would not want to repurchase.......I refuse to be a "lotion snob", and buy according to what my skin needs and what my pocketbook can afford.

that is ONE product emerald bay has put out.... everyone isn't going to like everything made by a certain line. EB has put out a couple great lotions this year i really like dark kickin ale and dark n dazed. i wasn't crazy about sunburst sorbet and definately dark but what works for me and what i like is totally different than what others think

thanks to everyone for illustrating why it's important to sample lots of lotions before you buy.... we all like different things.

The most important thing is to use products that work for YOU. You might find that certain cheaper products work better for you than the more expensive ones. I have found that Swedish Hemp Creme and Brown Envy work ten times better on me than other more expensive ones do. We can help you by sharing our experiences but, ultimately, it's up to you to find out what works best on your skin.

for the most part the high the price the more ingredients that lotion has that is going to help preserve and extend your tan. These can help you cut down the amount of time in the tanning beds and how long you go in for. I only like to tan about one to two times a week.

colorgod
05-12-2003, 12:14 AM
What type of bed do you use Feva?

Greta
05-13-2003, 04:23 PM
Feva most likely has a nice choice of beds, don't you work in a salon feva?

njchica
05-13-2003, 09:00 PM
that's a good point... it's not just what lotions you use, the beds play a big factor as well. You may need to tan 3 times in a regular bed to equal one "super-bed" session... I know people who use a certain bed once every other week and they maintain their tan.

BrOnZeDbOmBsHeLl
11-22-2003, 02:15 PM
I rarely upgrade to better beds. I love the base beds that we have at the salon I work at. The bulbs play a huge factor in the life of your tan as well. Ask the employee when the last time the bulbs were changed and about how many hours they have on them.

it amazes me that so many people giving out advice on lotions and tanning are young or havent been tanning for a long period of time..im by far an expert but i have been tanning since i was 20 and im now 37 so i feel that i do have some helpful knowlege..ive owned salons currently manage a salon.ive been to conventions too numerous to mention and although the get what you pay for can be true, there are many many quality lotions at lesser prices..its trial and error but you have to realize that with so many people tanning and using absolutly nothing on their skin that low quality is better that no quality..like nj said experiment using the sample..what works for one doesnt work well for another..most important thing is keep your skin moist..

After reading all the above comments I am not sure I want to post or not, but hey, everyone is entitled to his/her opinion. I recently started carrying all EB lotions at my salon and Dark Kickin' Ale; Mojo; and Toasted Twister (new one) has sold really well, all sell for 20.00. I have alot of under 21 peeps that tan at my salon and they have really enjoyed the quality and price of these. I also have had good results with AG Blazin'(sells for 32.00) and Synergy Go Dark (sells for 26.00) I still have those that will pay the 50.00 for Bombshell (perhaps the most popular at my salon) I have really tried to research and try different, cheaper lotions so that I am able to cater to those who are on a very tight budget.

hmm, this topic gives me an interest in Emerald Bay. My salon sells some of their lotions, i've just never tried them because some people have mixed reviews on them. I see a lot of people like them, though. From what it looks like a bottle is around $20.00.

Deputy DAn - for the bottle size, those are pretty expensive, IMO....

Deputy Dan

They are 9oz bottles. Other products in that quality range typically price at $35-$50.
We do have some very high quality products in the $10-$15 range in the Hoss Sauce line.
In fact our biggest seller has been Ultra Dark 8oz for over 10 years.

Deputy Dan

Silver Strike $15.50
Ultra Dark $13.50
Super Dark $11.50
Dark $10.00

Wow Oil $12.00

Any salon that carries Hoss Sauce should have these.

I have found that there are some lower cost lotions that work great for me compared to high ends with which I got no results. I believe it's different for each individual. What works for one may not for another..

boobrandt

I think, for the most part, you get what you pay for. However, like anything else in life, there are always exceptions. Black Tea is a great example of a relatively low priced lotion. The most I ever paid for a bottle was $65 and it was crap. So there are variations, but I still believe that the higher end lotions take better care of your skin. JMHO.

Andre and PJ do not post gigantic pictures of their products in every single post nor do they incessantly spam.

In fact, PJ doesn't bring up Tan-Aid unless a member posts a question about it first and Andre recently declined recommending which Ultimate products was best for HP beds in public...
