***** I posted this over at ask the pro's but haven't got a response from them so here it is again.....

I posted before about itching after tanning and I am getting no advice whatsoever at my salon... Here is a what is happening. I started tanning about a week or so ago.
I was pale but do not burn too easy. I do tan somewhat I just don't go out often. I went for my first session 9 minutes in a HP bed (it had weird bulbs all over the top of it rather that the long ones, kind of like the face tanners)
Second session 9 minutes (mega bed, long regular looking lights) I got burnt and started itching in the bed and for a few hours after.
Third session 7 minutes Itched during session and after but not to terrible.
Fourth session (tonight) Regular 20 minute bed. I started tingling and broke out in bad itch after 3 minutes. I held out for 3 more and ditched the other minutes I had left.

I am using Supre impact and You Wish by carribean gold. The itch I am having (if it a makes a difference) isn't like a bug bite or anything but more of a deep, pins and needles PAINFUL ITCH LOL! Can anyone offer suggestions. Also this time after tanning I showered a couple hours after and didn't apply lotion as the other times I applied lotion it made the itch worse. HELP!!!

****** Tanned today again... I waited a day. I didn't start the sharp pain itch thing until about 5 mintues into my 7 minute session. The itch this time was much more manageable (really just irritating) A few hours after todays session I have a bit of a rash on the tops of my thighs. I don't itch at all though now. Could this just be heat rash? I have never had that before so I don't know what it would feel like. Sorry for such a long post but the managers there aren't much help

Sounds like a tingle lotion to me. That usually makes you kind of burn. Is it that kind of itch?

You Wish isn't a tingle lotin. Does anyone know is Supre Impact is? That might be what's causing it.

I know that when I get burned, it itches. are you burning? If you get burnt, wait untill ALL of the itch & pinkness go away? are you taking ANY medications?

Well I haven't ever used a tingle but if that's what it feels like I don't think I EVER will LOL~ None of the lotions I have are tingles.[ This Message was edited by: WannaBTanMommy on 2003-06-15 22:14 ]

Man if non-tingle lotion makes me hurt like this I would hate to think what a tingle would do... Any suggestions on some other lotions to try?

Nope no medications and I hadn't tanned in 3 days so I know I wasn't burnt.. it just started to fee like sharp pins and needles within 3 minutes ( I am starting to feel like a wimp LOL)

Have you tanned before and felt fine? or has this always happened since you've tanned? Trying tanning 1 day without any lotions, then you'll know if its your lotion or something else.

Um, I tanned at another salon in a HP bed and was fine... It seems to be the base beds that make me itch I will try without lotion Tuesday and see what happens, Thanks

When I started tanning or the irst 3 wees then I tanned my sin elt prickley. I little pins. I was told that it meant your skin was getting tan. It only happenes while I was in the bed. It went away ater a month. Maybe your skin is getting use to tanning agagin. This is the first year I have ever tanned and you sound like I did when I started. I didn't use tingles either.

LOL at the kdis with the chips... I have three kdis so you can imagine how my keyboard looks sometimes. I am hoping that I just need to get used to it. It is getting better. It takes about 5-7 minutes now for the itch to start and goes away a couple of hours after I come home. Oh the things we do to look beautiful

The primary reason(s) for that tanning itch is dry and/or overheated skin. To cool the skin, try using a spray bottle with water in it. Itching can usually be relieved with a good skin moisturizer. (Try California Tans Total Immersion, you may also want to add some CalTan Insurance to the mix in the beginning.)

So I can use a spray bottle in the bed?? Here's a odd question... I was kind of thinking this was a heat thing but the salon said no, its not that hot etc, etc. What about using a cooling lotion? I mean when you get a burn you put cooling stuff on. Would this help? I know my salon sells cooling lotions.

It may be an allergy to the fragrance that they put in these lotions. If you are not using tingle lotions, the fragrance would be my guess as to the culprit! Which leads to the next search-that of the best indoor lotion for sensitive skin. I noticed you said you don't have the problem in the high pressure beds, stick with medium and high pressure. Keep us posted and take it slow for now.

Every year, when I first start tanning, I get the heat rash (or whatever it is) on my upper arms. It itches and has the little bumps. I go through this in the beginning every year. I haven't experienced the "needle pain", but when my son gets sunburned, he feels the "needle" pain and goes nuts until it subsides. Don't know what causes it, and it happens to me whether I use a lotion or not. Eventually, it finally goes away.

Well we've pretty much run the gamut on possibilities here, and any or all could apply. Two things I'd like to add just to make things even more confusing.
1) hopefully this is not the case, but maybe, just maybe, your salon is not cleaning tingle lotion off the bed very well (been known to happen).

2) a diet high in iodine could cause an increase in photosensitivity (shrimp, anyone?)

this actually happened to me before. I had been to the doctor, they even did a blood test to try to see if something was causing the itching, my doctor said i had sun poisoning, but clearly I haddnet even burned at all.... it finally went away after like a month. Never found out the reason.

That used to happen to me when I first started tanning..the exact same kind of "itch" as you described, but I just kept tanning a few times a week using regular (non-tingle) lotion, and it eventually went completely away. I've only been tanning for a few months, and it's gone now.

It has let up a bit... It was starting about 3 mintues into the session and lasting for hours.. Now I can go about 5 minutes and then its a milder itch. Also the rash goes away pretty quickly after, Thank goodness

Wow that is weird, I am glad to know that I am not the only one with this problem. The people at my salon are puzzled and I feel like a freak

I know just how you feel. When I change a lotion (hot) or overexspose I itch. If this is your problem your skin is probably like mine. FAIR. Usually if this happens I wait 2 hours after tanning, shower and use Hempz moisterizer ( 2 coats). I usually do this before bed. It all usually goes away before morning. If not I moisturize more in the morning and if all is well by evening I tan again. If you get small blisters or bumps you need to wait a day or 2 to clear up.It happens to me sometimes. Good Luck!!

Are all the itchies under control now...and did you find out exactly what was doing it?

I haven't *really* found out what cause it but the itch is less intense now that I have had a few sessions... And it doesn't come on as quick. I am onl doing 7 minutes for now. Hopefully next week I can try 9 minutes At this rate it will be a year before I am really tan LOL

You may be allergic to what they are cleaning the bed with and this would explain why it was not as bad when you wiped the bed off with water. Try a booth and see if that helps

I get the itchies, too. And it is horrible. You wouldn't believe some of the ways I've devised to reach those hard to reach areas. lol Just to add more confusion, there is a post on here somewhere by PJ that says increased melanin production can cause itchiness.

my 1st thought was a tingle lotion.... or tingle residue... but I'm totally stumped on this one.

I hope that it goes away soon for you...
