Does the staff at your salon take the time to really evaluate your skin type, goals, and skin care regimen? Or do they just throw you in a bed and sell you anything?
It's amazing... the people at my salon don't do anything other than put me in a bed. But there are owners I've met online who can give me such incredible advice about my skin type, color, and what products I should use.
Does your salon care?

My salon has always seemed to be very cautious. They will not let you go in for the time you 'think' you should go in for when starting, but go in for the time they think you should go in for according to your skin type ect. I came back to this salon when I started tanning again after 7 years because I have always been pleased with them.

My salon doesn't care. Unfortunately they just sell you a package, stick you in a bed and that's it. I've seen people ask about lotions and they sell them the high priced ones just to get the profit. When I got packages they didn't ask skin type or anything. They usually tell you if they installed new bulbs, but the other night I asked and they said they didn't, but there was a sign right on the door. Maybe this is why I'm changing salons after this package is done...56 minutes left!

If there is ever a problem that a client notices we are encouraged to call the owner whether it be at home or at the other business that they own because as she says, " She can't fix a problem if she doesn't know that there is one."

I really don't like unsolicited advice about my tanning, how long I should be in the beds, what type I should use, etc. I do, however, appreciate a knowledgeable answer to questions I may ask and a good selection of products.

But someone new to indoor tanning needs advice on how many minutes they should start out at, and on lotion. I've been in a salon where they asked a newbie how long they wanted to tan for. And never said a thing about using a lotion. I don't like someone trying to push a lotion on me that I don't think I'd like, but I don't mind someone recommending something.

The owner does. The young kids that work sometimes don't. The owner takes a lot of time to go through different things with you.

My last salon started me off pretty slow...My new one says I can start full 20 min. in a super bed cuz I have a decent base tan.

Like the rest, my salon is mostly college students. I don't like the sizzling stuff and they seem to know which ones they are. Otherwise, I'm just sent to my room...hehe

My salon is pretty good about my skincare. They're good at recommending a time I should go in for if I haven't been tanning in awhile or if the bulbs have just been replaced. They are really good with new tanners and don't let them burn. As far as lotion, it's not something they bring up first, but if I ask them they recommend a good one for me to use based on my skintype and how dark I am at the time.

My salon is okay about it, but they could do better. They don't skin type, but they do reccomend how long to go depending on the fairness of your skin. They sell nasty 3-year old discontinued Body Drench, but they do have a few newer, better CalTan lotions. The beds are good though, so I'll keep going there.

I skin type everyone that comes into my salon. I try to educate them and help them get the best tan possibe. Usually they don't want advice, so I wait until they complain that they aren't getting anything or any darker. Here's my chance, cuz they will listen now and are amazed with the results. I don't push my products on them, I give advice and it's up to them.

nope, when I went to get a package for the first time at the salon, I filled out the paper, told her how many min. I wanted to go and she told me what bed to go in. Thankfully I had already tanned before, plus if I had any questions I asked my mom. Anyway, when my package is up I changing salons, these people don't clean the beds very good and could care less if someone got burned or went to many min. No offense to the 18-23 yr. olds out there that work in a salon, but that's the age of most of the girl's that work at this salon and they could do a much better job than they are doing, heck I'm 17 and couold do a better job than them. It's like they are there for the money and they act like they don't know anything at all about tanning. But, I gotta say they all have awesome tans. Ok, enough rambling and ranting.

I am so thankful for this site otherwise I would have been lost when I first began tanning. The girls at my salon knew it was my first time to tan yet they ask me which bed I want to go in (there are 3 in my package) and ask me how long I want to go for...I was clueless and I burned the first two times I went. They didn't explain that I needed lotion, but I saw there were lotions for sale and I asked them which one they recommended. They recommended smoke black and did not explain that it was a bronzer ( I was really pale and it left some streaking. Of course I found out here that I should wait until I have a base tan to use it and once I did have a base I love the Smoke black. I asked them how often I should tan and was told that I could tan once every 24 hours. I have no problem with children, but everytime I go into the salon there are 3 young girls behind the counter talking on the phone or doing anything but being mindful of customers and there is always a baby blanket spread out on the lobby floor and two babies laying on it. I wouldn't mind so much, but the lobby is kinda small and I have to sidestep the babies and they tend to grab at my ankles or whatever is near them and I dont feel they are tended to (at least not while I'm there). All in all I don't think they are very knowledgable, nor courteous. I did mention to the manager (he happened to be in one day and asked me how I was enjoying the salon). That was all I needed, I told him exactly where I thought they could improve but did compliment him on his vast array of lotion selection and clean rooms. I told him that I did not plan to extend the time on my package when it runs out and as a result he gave me two free weeks of tanning, a free bottle of xpower and a free tan in an HP and asked that I give the salon a chance to improve and he was very thankful that I was truthful with him. I am giving them a chance, we'll see.

No, they dont care at my salon either, they just ask your name and how long you want to go for. They put me in a bed with old bulbs my first time and with new bulbs my second, so i burned, even though i went for five minutes both times.
At my salon before this one, everytime i walked in, this old guy would ask me if i wanted like twenty or thirty minutes, and i was always, no, ive only worked my way up to ten, or twelve. I dont like being super dark, and i didnt like that he was trying to make me that way.

HMMM, the 18-23 thing is a huge generalization, I don't deny the fact that many of them are lazy, but many of the most helpful employees and die hard tanners i know are 18-23 (myself included) At my request, my salon uses a better skin typing method, the Cal Tan one on the internet... Not all of us are bad, and not all are good, but that goes for the "nice old ladies" too, just remember they are trying to supplement their social security... sorry about the long post, just hate when people underestimate me

I do my best to help people. I don't know... I guess I'm just one of those people who lives by the old saying "do unto others as you would have them do unto you." I'd be peeed if someone wasn't helping me out, so I want to do something to help them.

No my salon doesn't really bother. I talk to one of the girls on occasions but it's just general chat. There is one girl that's there at night who goes through the whole do you have your lotion, goggles, etc. but she's the only one that asks about those, which kind of suprises me!
I really like my salon and I think the girls that work there are great but if it weren't for this site I'd be going about tanning the wrong way! So thanks a lot guys!

I feel that my salon cares... the first time I went there, I filled out a skin typing survey so they would know my skintype... they said that goggles are mandatory, and explained the importance of using lotion... they went through a bed demo (how to turn if off at any time, how to lower the canopy, how the controls worked, etc)... they moved my time up slowly by 1 or 2 minutes every 2 or 3 sessions... they asked me if I was pink at all before moving me up to make sure I wasn't getting overexposed. I like my salon!!

Mine doesn't give a crap about my skin. They never skin typed me. I was tan already when I started there and they just asked me how long I wanted to tan for! Thank goodness I have some knowledge about tanning. I am leaving this salon as soon as my monthly package is up. I got interested in finding a 24hr salon after I read a thread on here about one. I found one just a few miles further than I am used to, but I am going to try a tan there on Friday to see how I like it. The girl on the phone seemed knowledgable, so I am excited. I am going to like being able to go tan on my own convenience.

Great theory, cheryl.
Yeah, I want to use lotion, tan smartly, and I wouldn't mind my salon owners asking if i wanted to buy a lotion and stuff, but to some people thats rude.
Most tanners would say Well, I just spent $60 on a package and now you want me to spend another $40 on a bottle of lotion?
Then the Salon Owner or whomever tries to explain to you and theres where you start off bad.
Thats why I think most salons don't say anything, some probably don't even care.
I think that they think that tanners are there to get in, tan, and get out, not lolligag in the lobby and talk you know? Not that its a bad thing!
