Those are cool ideas. When you say what topics are new do you mean like have a box that says New Posts/Topics Since Last Visit? or Viewed Topics/Posts?

Here is a suggestion...how about a link where we can click to view the posts that we have responded to without having to go to our profile and scroll down to see the threads we subscribed to? Not to compare it to another forum, but I am also on a computer forum and there is a link at the top to click on to view 'your posts' and 'posts that you have joined in.
