I use to use self tanner and no matter how much I exfoliated and no matter how careful I was to put it on my knees, ankles and elbows did not turn out the same as the rest of my body. Also some people will have darker colored dots on their legs where the sunless lotion as settled in their pores. ( I hope it was sunless lotions you were talking about)

My mother is a fake tanner and she always looks fake....no matter what shes used.....lol....she also doesnt go but an inch above her knee when she uses the self tanners....VERY obvious in spite of the icky color..especially when she wears shorts!! ::) I dont think I have ever seen anyone whose used a self tanner look "natural" and I agree too, I have seen some who tan in salons and they dont look real natural either.......
fake tans are a poor substitution. i understand some people cannot tan for various reasons. i think if that was the case i would just stay white and go goth of something. j/k

That orangy color is not appealing at all. Why do people do it? I will use a sunless on my face just to darken my "existing" tan. But without a tan foundation, it's going to look very fake!

Thats true,I used sunless ...and told my mom when she mentioned my tan. She went and baught the same sunless to get my color...the next day she was like "I am not the same color as you" I was like "Mom,I have a tan too" lol. It looked good on her, just not as dark as me.

I used ST's a little bit a couple of years, but it just always looks fake, no matter what! Nothing compares to a Natural tan, even if it's gotten in a tanning bed, which some think is still considered Fake tanning!

I agree with most of what's been posted here. That's why I posted a question the other day on bronzers, because I have been afraid to try them again since my attempt at a sunless tan once long ago. Sounds like if you already have a tan, they can enhance the color temporarily while you get yourself really darker. I used to call people that went to tanning salons "fake bakers", but now that I go myself (and got ejuhmuhcated), I realize that is an unfair statement. As long as you're making your skin produce melanin, whether you do so from the sun or from a tanning bed, it's a bona fide tan. It's just "controlled tanning" due to the regulated UV exposure. Would it be any different from laying out at a pool with a special filter over you? Aren't sunscreens also a type of filter? But I digress... I can usually tell who's using sunless tanning lotion because the color is just unnatural, especially when used on the face (all over, not just eye touch up). Faces just tan different. Even if you can get your face as dark as say your stomach, I'd recommend against it just for purely aesthetic reasons. But, that's just me. ;-D

OK, I thought about this and it's not fair to say all dark faces are necessarily fake looking. I've dated girls before that got as dark as some of you and they used no bronzers, just had dominant native american genes. I guess it's mostly the orangey kinda tint that looks contrived. When I see a really dark person who has the good genes, it's kind of a smoky brown color as opposed to an orangey brown or caramel. Does that make more sense?

One of my friends uses sunless tanner. She looks really good. I can't tell at all it's not real.

I usually can't as long as their not orange and did a good job on their hands + feet (which IS possible).
