how does a client know to trust the salon is changing lamps as often as they should? i guess if the color isn't there that would be one way, are there others?

I am not sure there is a way to know if the lamps are being changed. I guess you can monitor the trash and see if they have the boxes piled up but other than that I would not have the foggiest how you could tell.

Also, depending on how often each piece of equipment is used, it could take quite some time before the bulbs even need changing. Some people think that the bulbs should be changed once a week or once a month. This is rarely the case. It takes a lot of 20 minute sessions to build up to several hundreds of hours of use.
Hopefully your salon is doing a good job when it comes to changing the bulbs. Besides not getting any color after some sessions, there is no way to really know. But you can always ask!
Keep in mind this too: I had a client who told me she thought that our bulbs just weren't tanning her anymore. I told her there was no way because the bulbs weren't even close to needing to be changed. I put her on a step 2 lotion and sure enough, she got color. She had hit her plateau and needed a jump start. So sometimes the amount of color you get isn't even bulb related. It can also be the lotion you are using.
Good luck!
JK

"Bulbs changed once a week or once a month this is rarely the case." It costs over $8000.00 to relamp!! What kind of bulbs are you using???? Rarely implies that this would sometimes be needed. This is NEVER the case.

True but if you had only one bed and were extremely busy, it could happen. You would be open 24 hours and running the bed constantly but it *could* happen. I was just leaving it open because if I said "never"...well, never say never

Whatever the case, I hope salons do change regularly. They owe it to their patrons.

(unexperienced tanner question) I am to assume that the bulbs lose potency over time?

One other thing, make sure you know a lot about beds and lamps before you go asking when they change their bulbs. Nothing is worse than some idiot who asks a question that he or she wouldn't know if the answer is good or bad to begin with.

Curiosity got the best of me. I just assumed they changed bulbs when they burnt out. I wasn't aware that old blubs were a concern to people until I read this thread. I don't think I'm going to bother asking anything about bulbs at the place I tan.

i personally think that anyone asking at the salon if they have changed their bulbs means that they want to know if they EVER change bulbs, some not so good salons really dont change bulbs and the people who tan there are getting ripped off (IMO)

how much do you have to know to ask if they change the bulbs? Just ask them if they meter the usuage! Whether or not the customer can really tell, they still have the right to question to see if they are getting what they are paying for.

My employees would look at you like you are crazy!!!! And I do meter my lamps. I usually do it on Sunday evenings when I run payroll reports and the salon is closed. I'm positive very few or maybe none of my employees know this...they have no part of lamp chages and it always happens when the salon is closed.

my salon always posts a sign when they have put in new bulbs and they ask that we lower our times by a couple of minutes.

What's the deal on lamps with black ends? Or flickering? And mixed lamps? Like several beleraium and several velocity all in the same bed. Wouldn't you use the same lamps if you relamped the whole bed? And consistant burned out lamps.

I think the salon we tan in the beds just replaces lamps as they burn out. These beds were awesome in Feb, now they suck. And I have asked about relamping. Never get an answer. We're pretty much just using the booth at another salon now.

I asked my owner today if the bulbs are metered, and do they need to be changed soon. Well, he got very defensive and said "I'm not sure, I'll check!".

I agree. My staff has no involvement in lamp changes. I will tell them when they are changed just in case we have beginner tanners - don't want them to up their time and then get burned.
Also, I think Anya said something about 800-1000 hours. It all depends on the type of lamps. Some should be changed at 800 hours, some at 500, all depends...

he got very defensive....

Personally I think those who fear an educated tanner have something to hide...If you are taking care of your beds properly you have no problems letting customers know that lamps have been changed, beds have been cleaned, etc.. If they ask..

Tanners should be told when lamps are changed.. If you have built up a tolerance and new lamps are installed..You could burn..

As for metering I do it.. No way could I explain to my employees how to do this correctly or even what to expect, calculate, etc... Do they know I meter? Hmm, it depends on how long ago they personally saw it.. They tend to forget things that mean nothing to them... But you can tell from their tans that I do...

the managers at my salon do it but all the employees know when it's done. since all beds aren't changed at the same time. even if they don't remember when it was done last they KNOW that the beds are metered on a regular basis

TikiTan

Every employee must know when lamps have been changed.. They must know to so they can cut time back... It is very rare that we change beds at the same time... But they have no idea if when I am tanning I have my meter in there or not.. Also I like to work after hours a lot to get things done.. I meter a lot then and of course no employees are around.. and Im not going to leave them notes that bed #x was metered and came in at... They are clueless!
