My guy friend in NY has told me recently how his gf has gotten him to try tanning..
I was happy until he told me the following:

1.)He does not wear goggles just closes his eyes..

2.) He was using some of her lotion until she told him to go by some spf at CVS and sneak it in..

How do I get him to have better tanning habits?? She apparently has been tanning for years like this..(atleast 3-4 he said)

the salon staff never educated her or she just doesn't listen?

Who knows, I don't know her very well cuz I'm down here, but my friend should know better, especially since I have stressed the importance of protecting your body and eyes when you tan!

pick him up a few samples from your salon and send him a taste of REAL lotion to try !!!

and with the lotion samples give him a few winkease, and make sure there is a moisturizer in the packettes u get him, it's sad that people would advise people to do such things. whenever friends of mine (or family for that matter) decided to try a tanning salon i tell them to make sure to use a lotion to NEVER EVER let themselves burn to use eye protection, and moisturize.
everytime i see my cousin who lives in MI, when she's been tanning she always makes sure she never burns (even in the real sun she has started using sunscreen at the beach) and how she moisturizes her skin.
i would suggest talking to him (not in a lecturing way) but tell him how u'd NEVER do that to your skin.

I hope that your friend visits us here and spends some time educating himself...

as far as the SPF thing goes, what a waste. You pay $$ to build your tan and the SPF is blocking the very rays that you paid for.

my cousin doesn't use sunscreen at the salon lol just when she's out all day in the real sun.... she used to never use it and of course burn...

Andrea

He burned badly the first time he went in and he was only in for 10 minutes and its cuz he used no lotion whatsoever the first time!

using lotion or not using lotion has no bearing on burning. you burn because you are overexposed period. he should NOT have started out at 10 mins

Oh lord. I know atleast 4 little girls (well teenagers, little to me) that do not wear eye protection even though the salon that we all go to stresses it and provides goggles to every tanner. They just don't get it that they are really screwing up their eyes!!

Anya1976

have they seen the eyepro counter mat?
i know every so often Sarah will whip that thing out and do random tests (of course asking if anyone is color blind to begin with lol)

LavenderFleur

Hmmm...I haven't seen the mat! I am guessing it tests your eyes? I know I griped at them all when they told me they don't wear anything on their eyes! They said they don't want the raccoon eyes, but I just use the goggles provided by the salon, and I don't have raccoon eyes at all!

yea it has dots of color and the # is in more dots of color.... u've probably had color blind tests done at the optomitrist right... it's pretty much something like that there are 3 or 4 #'s on the mat and then there is this really gross lookin eye with conjuntivitis, and there is an example of night vision loss... maybe brenda at eyepro should send your salon one of those so these little chickies can check it out

He told me he went again and got burned again. He has stopped using spf and bought lotion, but he refuses to wear goggles cuz his gf doesn't and he doesn't want to go against her. He hopes closing his eyes works..GRR...

I don't understand why wearing goggles will go against her. ??????

He needs to be a man and wear his eye protection.

I can't imagine purposely going into a tanning bed w/o having eyewear on. We have that mat @ the salon I work @ and I know exactly what you are talking about. The pictures they show are enough to make you want to vom. If raccoon eyes are a problem try a pair of globes they are so tiny and only cover what needs to be protected.

He doesn't want her feeling bad because she has been tanning for years.. So unless she changes her mind about it, he is screwed! By the way, they talk of getting married after six months, but thats a whole other story entirely..

njchica
05-11-2003, 08:55 PM
why the **** would she feel badly if he decides to be smart and protect his vision? what kind of normal girlfriend WOULDN'T UNDERSTAND that? If he says "I'm using goggles" and she breaks up with him over that (or even starts a fight), then he'd better get the **** out of that relationship ASAP.

Andrea
05-11-2003, 08:58 PM
he's one of those guys who lets the girl walk all over him and doesn't wanna cause any trouble whatsoever to mess it up.. Like I said, its a whole other story..Its his first ever relationship with a girl and he is 22 years old!

njchica
05-11-2003, 08:59 PM
well he's going to be awfully sorry when he's ruined his vision for a girl. how ridiculous.

maybe he should ask HER how her vision is nowadays can she see very well at night? did she get glasses or contacts in the past few years?

If she is that petty he needs to do himself a favor and break up with her. Be SMART, and protect them eyes.
