How often can you tan without burning out your skin? I've read articles that say if you over-tan you can burn out your melanin, but they never said exactly how much tanning it took to do that.

I have never heard of this. Doesn't sound accurate to me.

Just don't burn yourself. Know your limit.

It seems to my like one of those silly a-sandcorn-of-truth-in-a-desert-of-assumptions articles. What is true: as all cells of your body your melonocytes (the melanin producing cells) age. Thats why there are "old age spots" and aging skin dosn´t usually not tan as even as young one - and teenagers often tan faster than their parents. But even the majority of really old people (over 80) getting tan - and people who had spend their lives mostly outside in the sun. like old fishermen or farmers, are normally not pale (what would happen if their melanin really "burns out") but having a kind of permanent tan.

How often is to often? Tanning every day is to often, you should only tan every other day. As far as burning out your melanin I've never heard of that. Tan smart, if you pink up don't tan until it's gone, then take your time down by 2 min.

You need to only tan every other day. Do not go everyday or more than once a day. That includes laying outdoors also. So, if you go to the salon, don't lay out when you get home either.

Your body continually produces melanin so I highly doubt you will "burn it out" We all do have limits to our tanning potential depending on skin-type and genetics. Too much tanning would be over-exposure that would damage your skin. Tanning every other day and keeping your sking moisturized is recommended for a healthy tan.
