You should discuss this with your OB, they have excersices that are safe to do during and after pregnancy.

Ang: you shouldn't lie on your back to do ab exercises after about the fourth month. Try a rocking back arch; you get on your hands and knees and rock back and forth a few times and then arch your back. Simple and unexciting, but it helps take the pressure off your lower back. The other option I know of for pregnant women is to try a belly-dancing tape!

angela, I hate to break it to you, but you ARE going to gain weight and you ARE going to get a stomach. it can't be avoided.... it's part of the whole being pregnant thing....

If you were working out before getting preg. than there's no reason to continue with a modified work-out designed for pregnancy but it certainly won't prevent you from gaining or getting a stomach its more to stay in shape and it will help during delivery.

Exactly! Try to do mild exercise while pregnant, but you can worry about your tummy post-partum. There are much better exercises to tone up again later.

Hey..I did step aerobics until the day before I gave birth, so it CAN be done.
I did crunches..but I used my step bench. I stuck two risers under it, so it was inclined, and did them that way. I was able to keep my abs strong, but not worry about seperating my ab muscles. You need to keep that part of your body strong, because you will use it when you give birth. Seriously, staying in shape during your pregnancy is one of the best things you can do. It WILL give you an easier labor, because you'll be in better shape period, and not get tired as quickly. You will also bounce back a lot faster, after you give birth.
You will gain weight, and yeah, you will get a stomach, but there's a difference between a pregnant woman, and a FAT pregnant woman. Not gaining much extra weight is the way to go. I mean, the baby and placenta, and general extra blood and water will add weight, don't try to restrict that or anything, but some people kind of use it as an excuse to gain a lot. I was able to stay within the normal limits, the weight I gained was almost all baby-related, because I continued to exercise. After I gave birth, I was able to shed a lot of the weight right away.
I'm glad your doc gave you the go ahead, my dr was so completely against what I was doing, but I knew what I was doing was right. And now, the general consensus is that you should keep up an exercise routine.

Hej,
like Monkeygirl I did exercising in my pregnancies until the day I give birth - and I will do so in my recent pregnancy. Monkeygirl is right, strong muscles are helpfull for giving birth.
