View Full Version : Anyone here an exercise major?
I have been fighting recurring leg cramps in my calves. Anyone here know a lot about shin splints in runners, some stuff on lactic acid, anything like that? I had a massage the other day to help out and the therapist said she thought it was lactic acid buildup but when I researched it on the net that didn't really sound right. I am really looking for some answers.

I have had leg cramps in my calves for 3 yrs. since I have been working out I don't get them as often. Mine started when I opened the salon, being on my feet all day with crappy tennis shoes, Now I wear good tennis shoes and they are going away. I use a heating pad and that helps a lot. I learned that if you run or jog in place you should make sure you use your full foot not on your toes, this does cause shin splints. That's the best I can help you with,Sorry.
I have been using ice and I am thinking about getting a shin compression wrap. I tried heat and it seemed to make it worse. I only get these if I over do it and I over did it in January and I am still fighting it. Thanks for the help though, I will try to be sure I use my whole foot when I run.

Add more salt to your diet. It works wonders for shin splints. I know what you are going through. I had episodes with those when I played ball. They hurt bad. Also adding more Calcium & Magnesium (sp) helps a lot too. GNC has some wonderful suppliments.

Spending a little more money on running shoes is well worth it. I run on average at least 3 miles a day and I get new shoes every other motnh. I have never had a problem with any sort of shin splints or cramping of the calves. I also advise a good strecth before wroking out/running and stretching again afterwards. That should prevent any lactic acid build up.
Thanks folks. I have a good pair of running shoes but they do have close to 2000 miles on them now. I just really like the way they feel and so I have kept them longer than I should have. I will try all of these ideas.

That explains alot. You really need to get new shoes, that is way past the ammount of miles you should be putting on them. I know what you mean by they are so comfortable though. But look at it like this. Would you go 10,000 mile between oil changes in your car? It is kind of the same principle
I put new inserts in them because I pronate and those helped a lot. I have about 800-1000 miles on the inserts though. Maybe I should take up checkers.
