Everyone talks about the dangers of the diet, too much this or not enough that or that ingredient is dangerous. How dangerous is being 75 pounds overweight for 20 years? I guarantee you that whatever the side effects are of diets of any type or diet pills that more people die from just plain being fat.

The diet may work just because you deprive yourself of your regular carb intake, but still, I think moderation is the key, and all that beef and bacon and full fat everything made me feel nauseated. I think a little fruit and whole grains won't hurt if eaten in moderation.

No definative evidence of Atkins diet being dangerous. All studies showed IMPROVED blood chol. levels after 6 months.
The first two weeks are the only time you are limited to meats, cheeses, etc.

I eat fruit and veggies everyday now and have continued to lose weight by counting carbs. I would never save up 30 carbs for a donut...but rather, I dole out small amounts of healthy carbs throughout my day...a few strawberries w/ breakfast, a small salad with lunch, etc.

Whatever...this subject is so overplayed...I look good, I feel great...it works for me. That's what matters in my case.

I hope everyone has a way of eating that works for them...no matter what it is.

just wondering...in what way did it make you think? I'm curious...no ulterior motives for the question.

I liked what I watched. It was exactly what I talk to people about until I am blue in the face, but they just don't get it. I love it when poeple say, "Oh I tried Atkin's for like 3 or 4 days, but I got so light headed and dizzy."
Well duHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! Your body is going through sugar withdrawls of course you are getting dizzy. You are breaking an addiction your body craved.

I have heard so many people that really like this diet. For me, I have always tried to eat very healthy and if I eat something like a hamburger at a fast food place I get really sick from it and feel just horrible all day.
Call me nuts but I love veggie burgers by Morningstar Farms. I just do not think I could eat all of that meat and cheese. Red meat is a once or twice a week thing at max and then its very lean cuts. I am also allergic to milk. Not an intolerance, but an allergy. Adkins is out for me. I am happy for those who use it and have success.

Milk & Cheese allergies are different. I suffered from the same thing. Atkin's cured it for me. I no longer have seasonal allergies either.

I only did the atkins jump start and loved it. I really needed to do the exercises along with it and then watched what I ate. I wouldn't want to live on that diet forever. Just to get started I think it's great, but remember to exercise too.

like I said, I only caught the tail end of the segment. It showed his wife cooking lunch in butter, frying stuff.... and the interviewer was saying that he was "large" (not skinny, not obese, but large) and also asked the cholesterol question and Atkins looked guilty when admitting to the number.

Believe me, Atkins sounds like a great diet to me.... but I've tried it and could never make it past the first 2 or 3 days. Massive headaches...... I'm not saying it's bad, I was just sharing my opinion on the part of the segment that I saw.

the thing is, there's no definitive evidence that it won't cause complications later in life. that is the major problem i think

i personally don't understand the no fruit thing, and that there is why i couldn't do it! my motto is: eat what i want in moderation, because i can always work it off later i doubt i will ever follow a specific diet and start counting any intakes. only if my health is at risk.

LOL...Hey sugarpie...Maybe we should suggest an FAQ thread for Atkin's and Weight Watcher's. I am about sick of repeating things myself. It never ceases to amaze me how people make decisions about something based on what the mainstream says, rather than digging in a researching the evidence for themselves. It's the same with the Bible...LOL

LOL...I've only said over and over that I eat fruit and veggies daily and people still seem to want to say Atkins is the meat & cheese only diet.

I don't like to do this folks, but I will show you how fat I got compared to what I am now:

BEFORE & AFTER

No longer do I have high blood pressure, high cholestrol, none of that garbage. My doctor says I am healthier than she's ever seen me.

alright, the fruit thing aside, i'm not knocking atkins. but following a diet as such is not for me. and as i said, people don't know what's going to happen in 50 years.

Yeah and they didn't know what was going to happen with the low fat, low calorie concept either (which was pushed starting about 25 years ago), and now look. America has an obesity & diabetic epidemic...The proof is in the pudding.

Hey, I have nothing but respect for the people here who have made the Atkins and South Beach diets work for them. The major issue I see is that no plan is a "one size fits all" formula. Everyone's metabolism differs. We all know there are people who are just "skinny" and others who are just "chubby", no matter what. About 100 years ago they typed people as ecto-, endo- and mesomorphs based on body structure. (They thought personality was related to body type). I have to work to keep my weight up, whereas most people have the opposite problem. So my view is that everyone has to find what is the healthiest option for them.

I agree. Nobody is exactly the same, so things aren't going to WORK exactly the same for them either. Lots of people have success... but lots of people also crash and burn. You just have to find what works right for you.

Thanks Honeybee! Even my eyes are big again! LOL They were always big and then I got fat and they kinda got lost in all the fat on my face!

My skin has far fewer problems now...just the normal t-zone oiliness, but I never wear foundation and it looks pretty dang smooth for a 36 year old. Before Atkins, I had a BIG problem with it always being blotchy...too red in some places, too dry on the cheeks, etc.
No more breakouts now.

The only problem I am having is that the skin still needs to tighten up a little bit...a little loose here and there where it was so stretched from fat.

Anyway, regardless of the controversy, I KNOW I am A LOT healthier like this than carrying around 40+ extra pounds.

My dad, my sister, and I were low fat freaks for the past 15 years...we ALL 3 ended up FAT. Despite my sister working out with regularity, my dad playing golf daily, swimming, riding his horses, etc. and me swimming, kayaking, riding, etc.
My dad even ended up with type 2 diabetes and high cholestrol (which are both GONE now since becoming a devout Atkins follower.)

Today I ate Atkins pancakes for breakfast with a few strawberries and fresh whipped creme...decaf with creme and splenda, and a big bottle of water afterward.

for lunch I had a chicken ceasar salad w/ hard boiled eggs on top, minus the croutons.

for dinner, we are having steak and mashed cauliflower.
low-carb cheesecake for dessert.

YUM!

This is very typical for me with sugar-free jello cups here and there for sweet snacks, or low carb ice cream...
a handful of nuts for a salty snack is always good...

I feel like I am so UNLIMITED in my food choices, whereas I always felt limited doing lowfat.

I realize one size never fits all...I am just so glad Atkins fits me.

they were bogus...the only heart problems he had were caused by an infection from an illness, not from his way of eating. His own doctor varified that and so did his wife.[ This Message was edited by: ~*HoneyBee*~ on 2004-02-21 22:26 ]

I believe that Dr Atkins was very intelligent in leading americans into understanding what kind of processed sugar garbage we put into our bodies. With that being said, I don't go low-carb, I go LOW PROCESSED sugar...For people who cannot do atkins, it's a nice modification. It has kept 100 pounds off of me for 7 years.People need to understand that "back in the day" when childhood and adult obesity was rare, they did not have all the hohos ding dongs, and twinkies we have today. IF THEY ATE THEM , it was once in a blue moon. Marilyn monroe was a healthy size 14, a far cry from OBESE. Most people back in the day were "thicker" than our "super models" but they certainly were not obese like we are today.

I guess you have to hold the camera so close to yourself when you take your own pic, that it kinda distorts your eyeballs! LMBO!!
